Watches with thermometers aren't that great. If you're wearing it the heat from your wrist throws it off. You literally have to take it off your wrist, make sure it's in a shady area, and wait ten or fifteen minutes for an accurate reading.

I own a Timex Intelligence Quartz. I got it for surfing. Its features, which include a thermometer, compass, and tide gauge, just aren't that reliable. Which is why you don't see these features typically on watches.

Do you know what the word "shitter" means? It means a watch that shits itself after 2 years and needs to be serviced but its a worthless fuckin watch (cough invicta) so n one bothers getting it serviced so it just ends up being a shitter in your dress drawer. WHY would you do that to yourself when you can buy a reliable Seiko which won't shit itself in 4 years like most low-end swiss watches of similar price ranges do?

Most of what he said makes no sense really. The orient should be fine for >2years, and the g-shocks definitely will. He's just being an idiot. Even Invicta, which understandably gets a lot of hate, [automatics] usues a lot of seiko movements, the same ones used in the in house seikos he talks about in the very next sentence as having decent movements.

Is a sinn 104 a shitter? pimped out ETA at least. I eventually want one of those. Will probably skip omega for a rolex when I plan on buying actual luxury

>>13896884
It's more than that, but people have this weird thing where after you buy 3 that it could have been enough for luxury, when that bridge is about 5-6 of my boxes in reality. I guess it will be apparent in the future when I add more gshocks that I am deliberately collecting casio.

>>13896892
Yeah, most of what I collect is going to be quartz. When the handful of cheap mechanicals start to drift off over the years I'll service what I care about and keep the others around if I feel like bringing them back to life. Which isn't going to happen for a long time because they get rotated around a lot, and I doubt a few miyota/'russian/orient movements (pretty much what the rest of the ones I buy will have, maybe a hamilton) will cost me my body parts.
The argument is that it could be more than the watch itself, not worth it, etc. But by the time that comes I will either want it alive because it means something to me, or if designs vastly changed and you can't buy anything resembling it too much it will be cool to have and worth running.

Friendly reminder that the type of person who buys and wears reps is scum. These are the type of people to use others, be generally scum, think they can cheat their way through life etc.

Wearing a rep is an obvious red flag. A normal decent person would buy an actual watch they can afford, not try to trick other people into thinking they are wealthy by using fraudulent goods.

These people miss the entire point of the hardwork that (usually) goes into saving up and buying a real watch like a Rolex or Omega. They simply see a rep as a tool they can use to deceive people. It is a very obvious character flaw.

Hypothetical to you all. The 50,000 threshold in price essentially affords you a mid-tier watch from any of the brands that watch enthusiasts might dream about but never actually own.

If you found that you could buy a single watch in this price range (say, 50-60 thousand), without any real-life repercussions other than you can enjoy it guilt-free, what would you choose?

More specifically, by what criteria would you be making the choice? Would it be a grail watch that you've lusted over since forever? Would it be 'the best of the bunch' with the most complications, the most bling, the most prestige? Would you decide against another watch solely due to technological limitations or innovations?

In short, if you could get that Patek...or that Breguet....or that Lange....what would make you choose one over the other? I would assume not something as mundane as timekeeping ability or power reserve....there would be more to the choice, right?

Is it about technology for you? Is it about 'heritage' or brand recognition? Is it about aesthetics and form over function? How would you choose? Where do you place the value of a watch that expensive?

<pic unrelated of course>

hey seagullanon

I'm assuming you're talking about buying something new and easily obtainable, rather than some equally expensive, rare-as-hens-teeth vintage piece. My usual answer is the Lange 192.025, the new version of the platinum moonphase Lange 1. I've always been a fan of the Lange 1 dial layout, and the finishing on the Lange 1 movement is of course almost perfect. The day/night indicator in the new moonphase is also something I think is pretty clever - like my Vager Hauers, it's a slaved 24 hour dial put to some better use and display than an ugly 24 hour dial, and makes it that much easier to set the date.

Interesting about the Lange - I was very attracted to them when I first started looking at watches more seriously. They've really figured out a way to look unique as a brand without messing around with externals. Their faces are absolutely Lange, even the Zeitwerk.

So, this would be pure aesthetic choice for you, as opposed to anything technological as well? I too enjoy the Lange1 in general...something about the proportions of the main and sub dials is just...perfect.

lol I did the same thing with my Seamaster at the Science Museum in London, though I never did take a pic with it. I'm curious though...is it the history, or the ruggedness of the watch that appeals to you? Or neither? For me, the Speedy always had the perfect face in terms of proportions for a chronograph; everything is perfectly legible, everything is perfectly spaced. It's a perfect watch. The only thing that bothered me recently when handling one is that the crown protector guards in the case make winding surprisingly difficult for my fingers...but perhaps that's just me.

Both, as well as aesthetics. No other watch checks all of the boxes for me like the speedmaster pro. It is kind of a dog to wind, I've gotten used to winding it back and forth half rotations though.

lol Fair enough. I shouldn't laugh, but your description of the quality of the crystal is so visceral that I can almost taste it. Given the potential for damage, would it not make more sense just not to wear a watch at all?

>>13898296
Ah, okay...I hadn't thought of that. The Seagull that I use doesn't have any protectors, and for a while I was scared shitless that I'd knock off one of the pushers or the crown itself. Now that that fear is gone, I have no concerns winding...but when I tried on the Speedy in a shop a few weeks ago, it definitely felt more difficult.

For a long time the Speedy for me was the ideal watch, and it was to be my first chronograph that wasn't a digital. I still might pull the trigger on it one day. For me the space history is a huge contributing factor for my love of the watch, but that's because I was a space nut when I was a kid. I still remember when they finally got back pictures of Pluto for the first time a few years ago....I nearly shit the bed.

You know Anons, I do wonder if it's not just me. I really have a lot of respect for Breguet, in particular for their history (not necessarily business practices or whatever else). As in, I should have the same reverence for their name as...well...Patek (I'm sorry, but it's ingrained in the society I grew up in...). Obviously we can see the flaws in these things, or the elements that could be executed better...

Back to the point though. Am I the only one who doesn't particularly like Breguet's aesthetic? I mean...I really really don't like anything of theirs....at all. And I've tried. Every few years I'll end up back on their website, checking out the new designs...but it all looks wrong to me. In other words, I 'should' like it...but I can't.

Is it just a coincidence that no one seems to talk about them here at all?

Well, speaking for myself, I don't have a big interest in haute horlogerie watches. My usual zone of interest is high end series produced watches in steel. Watchnigger here. The girls in the store are literally turning my job into Papers Please.

Until now if I did a job, I wrote the info on a post it note, and the customer brings that to the girls at the cashier and pay. At the end of the day, all the data from the notes go into my computer and the daily income is checked with the data the girls have to see if it matches. Also I put in the repair sheets in the computer, what watch was taken, what was completed, what was given back to the owner and payed for, etc.

Now on top of all this shit for one day, they're making me write this exact same data in a scrapbook, in case THEY fuck up, and their cash register doesn't match at the end of the day. Their "logic" is that the numbers adding up at the end of the day is their responsibility, so I have to do this extra bullshit for them (???????).

It's fucking December, I'm knee deep in garbage watches that's lagging behind, I don't need more bureaucratic bullshit to deal with.

Thanks guys, i’ll probably go with a gshock and just deal with the bulk

That is wild! I had no idea. Thanks for the explanation...it's so far out of my normal experience.

>all the aesthetics
I disagree with you on that. Aesthetics include not only the visual proportions of the watch but also the feel, the weight, the temperature....everything. In the same way that gold watches simply feel like gold as opposed to watches that are gold plated. Sorry Anon...your argument doesn't really hold up

There is an argument to be made for people who buy expensive goods so that everyone knows they can afford it. You see this sometimes with people who leave the tags on, for example (usually on clothing). But considering the R+D, materials, manufacturing tolerances, etc., certain watches are not overpriced.

I had this debate on another forum about leather jackets the other day. Anons were talking about 800 being unreasonable to spend on a single item of clothing, but when you do the research and break down the cost of each section (skin supply, tanning, design, stitching and finishing) then you tend to reach about 600, and higher if the leather is more choice or refined. There will always be companies that bulk up their price, of course, which is why the common wisdom with watches (as with cars) is to always buy them second-hand or pre-owned so that you don't take the usual 15-20% hit you get walking out of the boutique.

I haven't felt 'pride' owning a watch since I bought my first one...now I just buy them for myself and I don't really care if other people like it or not. So perhaps you need to consider it as the first step of owning something expensive that others can see.

New Rolex replicas are in 904 steel (same steel as the genuine) and weight the same, with a difference of a couple grams usually

Replicas are generally not £500. More like £250-£300
£500 gets you that almost identical Rolex. Seems good value to me...
You can find people to service them as well or just buy a new movement for £40 and drop it in.

They use the same metal, have the same weight, temperature and feel.
Only retards would buy any replica with any gold parts or any with a display caseback.
Maybe you could tell the different from the bezel click though.

No, whatever you do, do NOT bring a vintage Omega to an official service center or a modern Omega authorized service center. Those places are equipped and trained for routine service on modern Omegas, not for working on vintage watches.

You need a vintage watch specialist, and the Vintage Omega Forum is the best place to ask for advice on locating a reputable independent watchmaker who specializing in working on vintage pieces.

A hi-beat will still require servicing promptly every 5 years, but for me the trade-off is worth it for what is gained in positional accuracy and shock resistance. The VFA re-issue is the most extensively hand-adjusted regulated balance escapement likely produced since the quartz revolution, which interests me.

The mechanical side of Grand Seiko is one of the only remaining watchmakers in the world that creates regulated balance escapements that are extensively hand adjusted to increase accuracy anymore. Basically every other high end production watchmaker uses free sprung balance designs that don't require the kind of skill intensive hand manipulation of hsirspring geometries that adjusting regulated balances do. Grand Seiko is preserving a dying chronometric art, really.

It could be worse Anon.

I started a new job recently, and I've been keeping my own notes just as a matter of record and clarity. You know, wear a belt 'and' suspenders.

Well, the second pay cheque I got was missing one entry, and I knew about it immediately because the total was incorrect. After double-checking my records, I knew I was right, so I 'inquired' about the missing amount. Of course, it was a clerical error on the part of the financial section of the office, and they'll fix it.

People today don't care about their work, and when it comes to money and especially 'other people's money', they don't care either. Expect people to fuck up, and just make sure you have your ass covered so that there is no dispute. It's like driving a car today...you can drive safely, but it's all the idiots on the road who might cause an accident that you have to look out for.
