:^=)

By the way, Anon, if you are reading this, pic related is the watch.
After all these months (years if one looks at the point when the watch parts were laying around) I found the decorative cover again.
It still has the problem of bending spring-pins, but it works allright, I will have to see if there are hardened pins. Do hardened pins exist?
Also: should I renew the sprung splints that hold the wristband together? I looked up how to take it apart today because one fell out, what I did was simply to bend them out carefully to increase the spring-pressure so that it stays in, but these pins shouldn't be that expensive... right?
(On a fun note: the other wristband that I bought didn't fit even after sanding and filing it - 40€ for nothing; but not quite! It has the same width spring-splints in it, so I might be able to use them for my oceanus.)
It's amazing to think that this thing is almost as old as me - it really was worth it keeping it at the back of my mind.
I pretty much wrote all my questions into the picture.

Are you sure it’s glass? If it is, find the model number of your watch and buy a replacement crystal. You can polish acrylic crystals but not glass. For the springbars, maybe you’re just buying low quality ones? Try different ones. You can rebrush the bracelet easily but with patience. Use a green scotchbrite pad and only go in one direction. Thanks for you post, then it seems like it can be saved.
As for the pins, yes, they were included in a cheap amazon toolkit, I now have many different pins.
But to be honest, if you look at my pic then you see that the problem is probably inherent.
Are there any pins that specifically have fractional milimeter increments of the diameter? Then I might be able to find pins that won't bend due to thicker walls of the shaft.
But damn, it's really nice to see how good it can be restored. Sadly the glass really is glass - it was a very expensive watch. Why can't it be polished (my curiousity is speaking at this point)?
What about the sprung splints that hold the watch band together - am I to replace them after I took them all out for cleaning the band?

Kek, what a meme. "Heritage" is an even bigger meme in CY+3 anyways. In a few decades these fags will be extinct (or fighting south-africa style) anyways.
What do you value the most? I wish there was a watch with a monocoque body that has machined slits so that sprung pins aren't necessary and that the watch then only works with nato straps.
Also make it digital and with an atomic display and on top of that solar if possible but battery is fine too if it's efficient. Now that would be pioneering, because I have NEVER seen anything like that.
Why should one not polish glass on a watch by the way?
It's kinda sad that my face is all scratched up - they didn't build it with a bezel for some reason, the "why" eludes me to be honest.

A watchmaker can definitely replace the spring bars for you and yes it won’t be that expensive at all. Ah, okay. It still makes me think though, how can any conscientiout designer just leave the bar that exposed under a mere veneer?
Is it so that it breaks on purpose should it get caught on something so that instead of your wrist, the watch band tears apart?

If you buy spring bars from a watchmaker, they might just do it for you for free I mean.

The folded end link is constructed like that because it’s easy and cheap to manufacture, like you say it’s just a mere veneer. Think about when you put on a non-metal strap, it’s just the strap material hanging on the spring bar. The folded end links are just a thing to cover the gap of the connection of the bracelet to the watch lugs.

Modern watches nowadays use “solid end links. Instead of folded metal, it’s a machined piece of metal.

Ah fuck, don't even remind me, I bought a band hoping I could carefully re-shape the sold end-part to fit my specifiy watch. Spoilers: it failed. Basically dead money, but in case I need it, I can get a few splints out of that band, it's not like it can be used anymore :^(

Well, at least you call the parts you use to secure brake pads on bikes splints afaik, and this part is really similar, but I guess "split pin" works too.
The only real hope I have is to find more robust pins, since sadly the band doesn't have sold end lugs as descrbed here: >>13854761 >>13854766 >>13854769 .
After that, the bending pins which will then hopefully be a problem of the past are really the only issues the watch ever had.
The other concerns about re-brushing the band and somehow getting the glass replaced/scratch-free are aesthetic in nature.
I was in a watch shop, but it's literally impossible for me to find something I like, so the only watches I have are the ones that I come across by situational incidence.

Your issue with bending spring bar / split pin, whatever, must only be because they were cheap from amazon as you said earlier. I only managed to bend spring bars once, when I was getting impatient trying to change a strap, combined with my general incompetence, and forced it in (this is never a good thing to do, in a variety of situations)

A monocoque body a little like pic related but just not shit and more rugged?
Perhaps a simply bar with internal threads that connects to the watch body with two screws is better too.
Actually, it'd also be nice, since then it can be with a band made of metal.

And is there anything with a digital, atomic display?
Basically like the dispalys you'd find in an electronic metering system?
Pic related, but no interruptions in the pixel matrix.
I don't want a smartwatch, I want it to have the same grey/black lcd display that you find on cheap watches, as this display type is very energy efficient.
But then again I don't want to break the bank either.
I am not sure yet if metal watchbands or nato straps are better.
What is your take on practicability - will nato start to smell after prolonged wearing?
I am amazed that something like this doesn't exist yet... there's only stuff like this: https://coolmaterial.com/style/minus-8-field-watch/

Ah, okay, that's pretty much obsolete due to smartphones, though.
Watches on the other hand are quicker to access than the smarphone and it's a nice thing to wear. I actually went some time without a watch, and it was cumbersome getting the phone out to check time - but most don't know it differently. Do you think the watch will significantly lose market/usershare?

REEE.
What do you mean "raped by shop"?
Why do you think that no one takes it seriously? From a purely mechanical standpoint the digital way is (potentially not but often still) better in:
>precision
>energy efficiency
>reliability
>mechanical stability
>robustness
>cost
>quick readability
>multifunctionality
>representation of date
>and it theoretically has a whole world of aesthetic possibility if only the designers started playing around with types of LCD and custom structures for them
The only thing mechanical has is that it required more manual work and is more expensive.
I don't get it, make a body out of grade 5 titanium and add in some nice shapes or engravings on the back and it could be on par if not better.
I am legitimately interested, because if I honestly think about it, then the real autists are the mechanical buyers.
My father actually once, when I was smaller told me about the rich dudes that he would discuss contracts with would often times look at other watches and digital times when they had mechanical money-sinks on their wrists that cost as much as a nice house or a lamborghini.

Welp, I guess I am the autist after all.
For some reason I like the way they work, the simplicity that the embody, the thought that there are the tiniest structures in there that twist under applied voltage and make parts opaque suddenly.
I think a lot can be done for the case and the way it is designed, but sure, a display with lcd necessitates space and reduces possibility for certain optical elements that'd be possible with simply having a few hands hover over the face.
I still think the option isn't really well-explored yet. I guess the market isn't there.
>Captchas
Have you heard of the domain change? It is probably part of the Hiroshijew shekelgrabbing program, they need to moderate more and are clamping down on automation now, since having to solve a lot of captchas makes schemes where you give your captchas to companies that manually solve them less feasible.

This leads people to think those watches are cheap garbage, partly because of the cheaper price at the start and in the end because they are made like shit.

If they found out a way to create some beautiful ruby lcd displays by having some old swiss man rub some fairy dust together for a quarter of his life, lcds would be back in fashion and they would see a lot of use in luxury watches.

Good!
What do you think of Pulsar?
Pic related, I am kinda annoyed there's no bezel to protect the display, though.
Why do they do this? It's pretty retarded desu.
Pic related is the closest I could find to what I want.
It's virtually impossible to find a monobody watch anyways, I want one that is made for nato straps and has integrated lugs (no spring bars necessary, see: >>13856499 ).
Then I also want them to stop writing all that shit onto the face/body of the watch.
I mean, jfc, after two weeks tops you know what each button does.
REEEE
Is the watch I posted shit? It is at least more affordable, but I'd be willing to pay more if it means I actually get something that is made good and is robust and aesthetically pleasing.

Not really a fan of those huge suunto homages.
Most digital watches do not have a bezel for the crystal, same with most analog watches.

>Is the watch I posted shit? It is at least more affordable, but I'd be willing to pay more if it means I actually get something that is made good and is robust and aesthetically pleasing.
Looks like shit desu, but it will do the job.

About those writings, nearly everyone does that, mostly the older digitals had no writing to indicate function.

Well, I have never seen non-cartesian lcd displays, the most that was done there are the non-standard shapes that denoce "Mon", "Tue", etc. One could for example, instead of having square pixels simply make it a tesselation of triangles, hexagons, or even any combination.
Truly interesting designs could arise and there could be a wealth of animations as well, just think - it could be like a living, breathing font winding on your watch face without having the hassles that the modern smartshit watches bring.
That said, industrial design like on this Garmin in the picture I appended really does speak to me.
But damn, over 1000€ for a watch and all those unnecessary functions.
They would only truly be useful if they were capable of actually replacing or significantly enhancing the experience with my mobile telephone.
But assuming that battery tech gets better - is it safe to think that watches might in some capacity replace phones?
Will it be integrated there for those that don't play games and don't type up messages? Heck, it might all be voicemessages or voice-to-text in a few years already, the software is making leaps.
I guess that will truly be the new era of what was previously ever more coplex mechanical watches.
Old swiss man btfo.

>>13857265
>suunto?
I guess it's the huge glass look, right?
I don't like it that much either, in fact, the Nixon Unit SS Silver really struck a chord for me, but the display is too dim, and I can't justify buying a watch that I can't read well - the time is the primary purpose of the watch, no matter how you twist and turn it.

>mostly older digitals, everyone does that
Whoe the heck asked for it? It ruins what could have been a nice, simple aesthetic, reeee.

>> No.13857287

So basically you want a clean faced digital watch with integrated lugs.

Option one:
Buy vintage digital and drill holes on the same spots where the spring bars are, insert metal rods, cut and polish. Still leaves the face problem though if you dont destroy the dial.

Second option (way better):
Buy any case with solid lugs you want, then you buy the digital watch with the display you want, you take away the module and replace each contact point with the smallest magnetic switches you can find. Then you take your case and and fill the crown hole with something molten metal (solder if you are poorfag). Then insert the module in and try out the functions, make sure to know where the lcd sits in. Now make a prototype dial for it and send the plan to some workshop in china, make sure to add your own name to the dial so you recognize it later ofc.
When the dial comes, make sure the case back gasket is properly lubed, assemble your epic shitter and use a magnet to set it like a fucking boomer would set his childhood pulsar. Now you can enjoy a truly one of a kind timepiece which will also make a very good diver because of the lack of weak points in the case.

If you don't do option 2, you are gay.

The features on the side and the back are really nice too, I either like it when it's clean metal with simple, but yet detailed slightly rounded edges or the other look with the exposed screw-interfaces reminding of an engine block like here.
Damn it though that this watch is basically a computer.

I don't know shit about metallurgy, but I guess it schouldn't be too hard to find someone that knows someone that has the equipment to quickly put a single tack-weld in, no?
But at this rate I am better off designing an entire case, lol.
> prototype dial for it and send the plan to some workshop in china
Actually, this stuff is slowly shifting to india because the people realize that they are in fact people and are demanding higher wages.
Shit will crash once there are no more de-facto slaves.

Heheh, is this a joke about chinese deviation from prototyping plans?

Hahahah, come on man, at that point it isn't just a watch anymore, it's an experience.

Wew, now I finally understand what your approach was - a completely closed-off case. Hermetically shut, not bad actually, but why go through the hassle? A radio controlled specimen would be best assuming I don't come to Murica.

It think those buttons in pulsars were a combination of magnets and magnetic switches. There is a video on youtube where the function is explained.

Yeah, it seems to be a constant in this general, many anons seem to appreciate it.
I find it nice too, although I would have to warm up to something non-round for a while first.
I really like the way they integrated the solar pads, though. It is a nice piece I have to say, one really does wonder why they would still put the lettering apart from their own brand on it - a persistent feature I have seen on even the high-class digital watches.

>>13857508
I wasn't there today, I did however research the replacement of the watch-glass. It doesn't seem too insane, but after thinking about it for a while I started to wonder if it's worth it.
The shop I have locally I did visit some while ago, and it seems like he is more oriented towards just selling rather than repairing. My family members gave him some watches to replace batteries over the years, and even for that he demanded a pay after they had bought things there, so I am not sure if he'd be up to somethign like this.
If I remember correctly my father once had a diver's watch where the batters had to be replaced and the dude straight out refused since he "can't test the water-tightness there".

It's getting really late, sorry guys, timezones be damned but I have to go to bed.
But that seiko is really starting to creep up on me and eroding my autistic pre-conceptions, maybe I might fall for the meme. At any rate, it would be interesting to see what kind of model I would make in a 3D sktetch, since my ideas are pretty precise in some points but still shaky as an overall concept.
