To people who bought Orient Ray 2s, how is the QC on them? I hear they can be misaligned like seikos.

Was also thinking about a phoibis submariner homage but it seems their QC isnt great, not spending 300 to then replace a bracelet down the line. Which is a shame because I like the octopus logo

Why do these youtubers love the Cartier tank so much? It's an ugly watch, the roman numerals on it don't look right and it looks cheap.
The Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso with enamelling is superior in every way.
I really want one.

Are you not at all curious? They are fun as hell and it might depend on what country you are in but in most of eu there's great money in repairing/restoring clocks. I'd be sad to miss out on such a huge part of watchmaking because I didn't want to get my hands dirty. I love giving some old, dirty clock new life, leaving it perfectly clean and ready to go another 30 years. Sometimes you get something horrible though, like American clocks ( pic related ).

This one is from 1874 and in horrible condition. Pic is before touching it and it took me hours to get it clean. Because everything is so thin, it's all bent to hell. These things simply won't work if you do a good job with them. It all needs to be slacking and wobbly (don't know English terms) with makes it alot less satisfying to restore.

Most mechanical clocks here are Soviet Yantars, along with some pre-war European clocks. Most are worn to hell from lack of service, and 90% of the time it needs a complete re-bushing, and re-pivoting that the customer will never want.

It's not worth for me to get into clocks, get a whole another set of tools required, and somehow allocate the necessary space and time for them.

I will do electrics though. Pic related, I once serviced a transistorized Yantar like this one. Pretty neat little beasts.

It’s a reissue and the design is a lot more classic, just the finishing on that line seems to be a bit of a miss. That one you just linked now is boring and unremarkable. If you’re actually going to plow that amount of money into a watch just go to a dealer and inspect it personally otherwise the finishing might be ass. Clearly happens to the best watchmakers. Still waiting for the replacement bezel insert. Unfortunately the original ghosted insert can only be removed destructively.

I don't think I'll keep it, I'll flip it and either get another Pre-Bond that's in a bit better starting condition for restoration, or get a Heuer/TAG Heuer 1000 diver in full-size.

Absolutely, there's a huge amount of psychology involved in ebay, and one of the biggest is the idea of 'losing' an auction as opposed to not bidding at all.

People are willing to fight for something they see as 'theirs' the second they make their bid, even if it's 2c for something they expect to sell for $500. They will fight for it.

People will also watch a $0.01 auction just in case, where as they will pass over a $100 auction, even if--as I said before--the expected sale price is $500. It /just might be/ an ebin bargain!

So yeah, $0.01 starting bid.

Oh, yes, I was. I've solved that.

I came to the realization that money spent on a product is essentially 'dead' money. If you invest, you can make it work for you to an extent, but by spending it on the shit I used to spend it on, I was simply throwing it away in the most direct yet not noticeable way.

My waning interest has (in other words) extended to everything that isn't life-sustaining. For the first time in my life I have no emotional interest in gaining possessions. It's a very strange and scary situation, but I'm getting used to it. There are many reasons for this change, but ultimately it's simple, and devastating for the areas where I'd normally spend money.

So, I figured it out, and I'm okay with that. That being said, I still appreciate the beauty of watches and other fine things...it's just that now I have the distance to the objects as if I were looking through a glass case in a museum that was free for all to enjoy. In other words, the pieces are owned by all, and enjoyed by all, and thus it's unnecessary to feel the need to personally own it or covet it. I'm not sure if I'm making sense....the Rum of course.

Jesus....how are you man? I'm surprised you're still here. I still haven't set up the damn discord thing yet...Don't know, though I do know (I still have irrational fears about trusting it, for whatever reason). Eh, drunk ideas.

How are you? You know, the crisis I had was probably started with watches, because what I realized was simply how numerous they all are...that there is nothing really unique unless you're going Dufort or Daniels or whatever...but even then. Having something one-of-a-kind. I have one-of-a-kind pieces from other things (jackets, books, musical instruments and scores, etc.), and maybe because I've gotten older or life has changed for me, all the emotional excitement I used to have about 'owning' that choice piece has disappeared entirely.

It's really fucked up, and scary as I mentioned earlier. For all my life I've valued goods, special things I'd save up for or think about for months and then finally acquire, and be happy and passionate about. But now I no longer get happiness from physical goods, in the same way I don't get happiness from people....

It's gone totally into the abstract art direction (visual, musical, and literature). I want glimpses of perfection that grow with me through life...anything else just isn't good enough, or perhaps to say it more succinctly, anything else is static. I need things that grow with me.

So, it was a crisis that was good for me, and necessary....but now I don't think I'll ever buy another watch again. It's a little sad...but in truth...not much. Perhaps sad only for the familiarity of what I used to be and the complete uknowingness of what I'm becoming...

Very busy, is how I am, towards the end of the year. But lots of good stuff going on too.

I collect as if my watch collection is going to be a museum exhibit. As you say, accumulating a bunch of commoditized watches is pretty unfulfilling. There will always be someone richer with more and expensive watches. But having a box full of subs or a box full of calatravas doesn't really seem like a hobby to me. That's more in line with what you described as simply thrown-away dead money.

So I curate, rather than accumulate. By my estimate in participating in HAQ communities I probably have one of the 100 most complete high-end vintage HAQ watch collections in the world. I have examples of nearly every tuning fork watch design. I have watches that have interesting things to say about popular culture at the time they were made, etc. It is, at least for me, a much more fulfilling way to collect. I've written before I do at least 20 hours of research on every watch I buy, and most are considerably more. I'll never be able to race with oligarchs that buy limited edition langes and dufours, but that's not how I measure my collection's worth.

No no, of course. My drunken ideas were not to in any way influence or criticize how other people organize their funds. Nor was it meant to prompt you to justify your collection, which is easily one of the most impressive I've ever seen.

It was more meant to explain a little more fully why I've fallen off the planet and found myself not needing to be on it in the first place. I don't know what the future holds, and though I'm scared as hell over the emotional ramifications of this, I'm not as terrified as I was the day I figured out what the core root of the concern was.

This is the most recent purchase, currently inbound from Russia. It's a slava transistor, an unauthorized and unlicensed copy of the bulova 214. It's actually a fantastic achievement that they made any at all, given how difficult creating the index wheels is. However, they eventually had to stop - the rail lines nearby in the city caused enough disruption to destroy most of the index wheels they tried to make. Not too common in working condition - a lot of them have replacement coils (or more) from a real bulova. They also made some models with date, retrofitting a date onto the 214 design.

This page has some decent details on the unlicensed accutron clones.

apparently. You can see here the brown plastic parts (most notably the coil arms). They are green in Bulova movements. It is possible the coils died and were rewound, but that's exactly difficult and honestly if somebody did that it's sufficiently cool I'd be happy owning it. It's possible the index wheel has been replaced with a bulova index wheel, that's very difficult to say. But the coils are generally held out as the main test of authenticity of a slava transistor.

The dial I'm not 100% sure about. There are at least two styles of dial printing I've seen. The one on mine is more common, but I don't have enough high-quality examples to really determine if it's a redial. But unsurprisingly, I'm more worried about the movement tech being original than the dial.

Other than their automatics being pretty overpriced, and parts getting more and more restricted ETA is pretty good. I'd say their quartz movements are better than most Japanese quartz.

The ETA-2824 has a fatal flaw though, which I assume goes back to the 70's where beat rate, and therefore mainspring strength was increased, leading to some parts in the handwinding mechanism being subjected to larger forces, and more wear.

>> No.13847476

They are a generic third party mechanical movement used by a lot of brands.

Pro: they are low cost (relatively), reliable, easy and cheap to repair.

Con: not made to look good. pure watch fans frown on them because you can find the same movement in a $1k watch and a $10k watch (think IWC). both are marketed as mechanical but you are mostly paying for the brand. often slightly customized and labelled as new movement by brands trying to hide the fact they are ETA and want to charge a premium.

Very similar. However a lot of brands are having to move away from ETA because they effectively had a monopoly so they Swiss Govt. has forced them to stop selling their moments to other companies over the next few years.

It's why cheaper watches are using other movements like Miyota and certain higher end brands are moving to in-house movements.

The Miyota 8200 is a cheap basic-ass movement that's about equal to the Seiko 5's 7S26. Sometimes microbrands will put this movement in relatively expensive watches, which is kind of a scam.

The 9015 is a more higher-end movement that was meant as another ETA 2892 rival, but just like Seiko's attempt, the 4L25 (which was so much of a rival to the 2892 it can be a drop-in replacement for it) it didn't really catch on, same as Ronda's automatic movement. Some microbrands use them, and that's it.

On the other hand the Seiko NH35 (or 4R35, when put in a Seiko watch) is way more successful as an alternative automatic movement.

When time comes and you have saved up all the money you need for your rolex, you will have 4-5k... and you should put it into your mortgage. Buy a seiko or something with some of it. Alright /wt/, so I promised myself no more watches till spring and honestly it's already killing me. So I dug around my junk stash and found this pretty good condition case and dial. Only there's no hands and movement. Luckily I also found an other example of the same reference, that's pretty fucked up, but also it has two out of three hands and a movement that looks okay.

No, they don't. Only retards now who think any "in house" movement is better say such nonsense. Yes Apart from JLC, Rolex and a couple of others ETA are the best movements, as far as a thousand and ten thousand dollar watch having the same movement, that's on the watch manufacturer, not ETA
Not their fault ETA is the standard it's been copied so much

Are you measuring at the correct point? Because according to the largest study every conducted on wrist sizes that would put you well above the 99th percentile. Meaning you have some of the largest wrists on earth.

I don't know what to say, my height (193cm) is roughly at the 99th percentile, my lean body mass (~90kg) is probably one in 10000 or rarer among drug free adult men, and I lift weights 7 days a week. If anyone's going to have big bones it's someone like me.

This. Some of the richest guys I know wear their Rolex GMTs with natty old polo shirts and fucking sandals.
Owning a Rolex doesn’t require that you wear a suit every day or have a certain bank balance.
Some Watches don’t even lose their value and so they are a better purchase than cars, furniture and a daily fucking Starbucks.

I similar in size and have 8.25" wrists but I think you're exaggerating a bit. 40mm still looks fine and that gives you lots of options to pick from. I wouldn't go smaller than that though. Many HH brands have pure dress watches 40-42mm in size or more sporty models around 42-44mm. Depends on your budget and the style you're after.
