Is this pattern the "southwestern"?

Searching Southwestern or "Navajo" will bring up this pattern. I'm not 100% certain it's actually southwestern, canonically.

So then it's back to my question - why is this southern pattern popular in nordic jackets?

It was popular in the 80s and early 90s because bold colors and geometric patterns were in style. It was also heavily associated with the "wild west" ski towns of the time like Taos, Alta, Steamboat Springs, Tahoe, etc. It's coming back around now because of the wave of 80s/90s nostalgia.
