did I just come across some sort of gem?

bought this at a goodwill for $4. was in a bucket of random watches.

when I took it home I was messing with the crown and realized it was an hand winding automatic when the hands began to move

it appears to be fully functional

looked it up and was seeing these price tags
https://shop.hodinkee.com/products/1960s-yema-yachtingraf-reference-9312?variant=46987109967

could mine be a fake cos it has a circle around the Y. never heard of the brand either desu

what strap do you think would suit it? it uses a 19mm lug which is a bit annoying lol. if J have trouble finding a strap is it better to use a 20mm one or an 18mm one?

This is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Modern lubrication oils don't get 'gunked up' anymore. If the watch is serviced, then the date change function will be fine to use if you need to.

The only argument that I've ever heard that makes sense about watch winders is that you should NOT use them because they run the watch when you're not enjoying the watch. This leads to the need to service them earlier than you'd require if they only ran when you wore them.

I honestly can't think of a reason to use one of these....

the best thing about a low end vintage watch is that you can beat the shit out of them

get them repaired for a song (if they're eta powered)

and they will never be worth anything so you don't feel bad about squashed value when you ruin it while bump firing some shitty SKS or something

I've owned a couple of fakes. They're good for me as I get tired of watches relatively quick so I can replace it easily for a few hundred bucks and just bin it after 3 or 4 years.
I love the look of the thing on my wrist, other people comment positively on my watch and I've saved thousands of dollars. What's not to love?

the movements are not as good, they are not as accurate, you can't ever sell it if you need to, you won't feel good about having saved to buy it, and they have no water resistance. Decent replicas cost about a thousand dollars and for that money you can buy some pretty decent watches for under that and you don't have to feel like a sleezy bastard wearing them.

>> No.13826767

>>13826712
I understand what you mean. I'm not vehemently against fakes like other people are, but here's the reasons why you shouldn't buy a fake.
>there's good chance customs will seize your watch and you'll get nothing for £400
>a real Rolex or Omega or whatever will last a lifetime, a fake will not.
The gold on a real Rolex will never flake off. The indicies will never come off and turn your watch into a metal snowglobe. The spring will never snap in two or three different pieces from casual wear. With a fake watch, you run the risk of having a movement with gears that have the durability of saltine crackers.
>you will never be able to resell your watch
>for the price of a fake watch, you can buy a real watch with real history or real value
>not all fakes are "visually identical." There's a guy who calls out people wearing fakes from their instagram photos.

If you buy a fake watch, you should expect it to break within two years. And be careful. The seller might send you photos of a real Rolex and claim it's the fake one they're selling.

The trusted dealers will send another if your shit gets seized. I agree that the watches are much less reliable but they're not the fragile things they used to be.
I guess my main gripe with genuine is that you're wearing £6000 on your wrist. I don't want to have to worry about that sort of wealth on my wrist. I like being able to just throw my watch into a locker or go on a night out wearing it without thinking I might damage or lose it.
The replica watch community is insane for the details. Fakes are getting better and better.

I love my replica quartz Speedmaster I got for 57€ on dhgate. Great quality and reliable Miyota quartz chronograph movement, much better than getting a fake mechanical chronograph movement. I only wished it came without omega branding as I actually feel bad for wearing a blatant fake, I’d like it more if it had an sterile dial.
I oddly love it for because it’s a quartz and because I don’t have to wind it up every morning. I never liked the 1/s ticking of quartz watches but since it has a seconds’ subdial, it isn’t very noticeable at first glance. I like it despite all the hate. This watch is actually motivating me to buy the real deal someday because I love the design.
