I started wearing a big black fleece poncho at work. I've seen a few people in public wearing similar items. I think this sort of thing can be done, but you have to be aware that you are going to look a tad strange no matter what.

I absolutely agree. I have a black wool cloak that I intend on wearing all throughout this winter. Capes and cloaks have fantastic utility as garments too, which makes them worthy of being much more than merely an aesthetic trend.
