Right, rather than an endless loop of telling each other our fragrances are shit can you offer some advice?

I’m new to this, but over the last few months I’ve bought a few fragrances including some TF Private Blend. The problem is, I’ve been buying on a simple basis. Does it smell nice, yes or no? How do you actually learn to smell things in detail?

Obviously in Tobacco Vanille I can smell the Vanilla. In Prada L’Homme I can smell the Iris. But when I read the note breakdowns how do you detect all of the others? Is there a correct way to smell them? I assume burying your nose in to your wrist isn’t the optimal way.

This. It takes time and experience for your nose to develop. I have fragrances from back when I first started that smell completely different to me now. I have fragrances I used to love that I don’t like now. I have ones I used to hate that I love now. There are nuances to scents that you often don’t catch at first. Creed MI, for example, used to smell like straight up fruit candy to me, now I get a lot more of the salt, Iris, and musks.

having a lot of samples is fine. they are easy to go through and throw away. bottles on the other hand are much more costly and you have a sunk cost that will make you reluctant to get rid of them. just set a time rule like every year only buy x bottles and y decants at the end of the year after rating. say, 3 bottles and 10 decants at 5 and 10ml levels. it will take time to try everything thats out there and frags you thought were 10/10 may pale in comparison to something you find down the road.

depends honestly. when i think of how the word 'drydown' is used i usually take it to mean the top and middle notes having left, leaving the base notes. this is not how all frags work, some are 'linear' meaning at the end how they smell the same as at the opening. when just the basenotes are left, the drydown period in colognes ive used go from maybe a 1 foot projection to skin scent over a period of 3 hours. exceptions were a couple frags i tried that projected across the room from one spray on my chest

Dior homme eau smells like a citrusy version of Dior homme. Still has the nice iris with a bit or fruit and woods.

Anything that is not vanilla sweet. Literally any other category. Aquatic, fougère, whatever. To throw out a specific frag, maybe look at Polo Blue EdP. It's basically the anti Eros.

I can still smell it now and it’s been nearly 24 hours. I sprayed Grey Vetiver over the remnants this morning and I can still smell it after that. What the fuck?

Personally I think I’ll just spend the extra money on TL myself.

Thread dying but thoughts on Serge Lutens Fille en Aiguilles?

Can't find a sample/decant anywhere and discount site said they're getting it in stock. Almost done my decant of Slumberhouse Norne (which I love but can't afford). I've read SL is similar, but I've also read it's sweet which I hate.

Alright /fa/, can you rec me anything nice that won't break the bank too much? I'll tell you what I have so you get an idea of my taste. It will be something I'll wear in fall/winter regardless of the occasion.

eau de rhubarbe écarlate (summer)
cartier declaration (all year)
l'instant de guerlain (fall/winter, never daytime)
Terre d'Hermes (fall)
tom ford noir (going out)

all time favorite is gucci pour homme, but sadly that's discontinued.

Anon, I am asking for some personal experiences with the smell of the fragrance. I have looked extensively at US sample shops and have concluded that paying upwards of $16-20 for shipping for samples isn't worth it, so most of my providers are from Canada.

>> No.13790438

How “safe” is AdP Colonia? I’ve been given a choice of gifts at work and it’s shit like golf clubs, power drills and, curiously, the above fragrance. I’d use the fragrance if it’s a good one, but if not I’ll get the clubs and sell them to a colleague that wants it.

>> No.13790455

Trying VUI for the first time. My first thoughts during the opening were “I should have bought this instead of DHI”. Now though? I love the chocolate in DHI so much and this fragrance just doesn’t have that.

>> No.13790557

>>13790438
Colonia is a very traditional, old world smelling fragrance. If you like the idea of a classical Italian barbershop fragrance, that's what you get. It's not hard to find a tester of AdP so why not sniff before you commit? Try Nordstrom.

Sampled a couple of Tom Ford PBs today.

Oud Minerale - much nicer than I thought it would be. But I prefer Oud Wood.

Tobacco Vanille - not a fan. Not horrible but not good at all imo. Smells synthetic

I’ve always felt that the opening of TV is one of my least favourite from Tom Ford, but the drydown is one of my favourite ever.

>> No.13790610

>>13790557
Thanks. I’m new to fragrances so “traditional” doesn’t mean much to me, but I couldn’t believe how long it’s been around when I first saw it.

I’m in th U.K. but there are a few places I can try it. I just thought if it was safe enough to blind buy I’d order it tomorrow. It’s free, in a sense, so it’s no major loss.

Never blind buy. Scents will vary on different people's skin.

Go to a store. Spray it on your skin. Smell throughout the day.

Do you like the opening?
Do you like the drydown?
Do you like the projection/lasting power?
Does it fit your budget?

If so, buy.

>> No.13790678

>>13790624
When do you wear it? I desperately want a bottle but can’t think when I’d wear it.

When I was new to fragrances I didn’t know about projection increasing with heat and I thought I’d wear Tuscan Leather. 6 sprays. To a barbecue. In July.

I had to go to the bathroom and wipe myself down. It didn’t change much. It was fucking obscene. I tried to sit downwind but that fucking fragrance defied physics and went against the wind. It put me off wearing fragrances in public for a while.

>> No.13790682

>>13790645
I (like most people) was turned off initially when wearing it but then it just developed beautifully. To me it's the "perfect" scent. I have a collection of roughly 80 colognes that I've accumulated over the years (a lot of testers, cheapies, discounted sites cos I'm a poorfag) and I would in a heartbeat trade them all in for a few bottles of Tuscan Leather to last me the rest of my life. I have a few decants but once I get the cheddar up I'm gonna treat myself.

>> No.13790688

>>13790678
In the ice cold is when it truly shines, but I've worn it in hot summers. You screwed yourself with the 6 sprays man. That's fucking obscene. I only go 4 in the winter. And that's pushing it for me.

I don’t own a full bottle (I buy the odd 2ml sample if I have an occasion I want to wear it) but I feel like if I ever do it’ll be a 100ml bottle. I always buy 50ml (or smaller) but I just know that TL would last me years and years.

>> No.13790694

>>13790688
Like I said, new to fragrances at the time. Looking back I find it hilarious. Two on the neck, one on the chest, one on the back of my head and one on each wrist. I don’t even use that many for Mugler Cologne now, never mind TL.

>> No.13790707

>> No.13790716

>>13790694
Yeah, that's insane man. I actually prefer my colognes to sit slightly at the skin with just a bit of projection. I tired Rasasi's La Yuqawam because everybody called it the TL killer, but it's too sweet with that raspberry note and isn't as well blended. It's good, but I can tell the difference. Hell most people wouldn't be able to tell at a whiff, but I will, and I wear shit for myself.
