Hey /wt/, any of you seen one of these before? It's a Royce Mexico, probably from the 70's, and me and the customer have no idea how to open it.

Every sign points to the method of blowing compressed air into the pendant tube to blow the crystal out, but the whole thing is really fragile. Any idea if these were ever meant to be taken apart?

In the US, old money tends to wear Timexes as a symbolic gesture with the approximate meaning of: "Fancy watches are for waiters and taxi drivers."

Is there an equivalent watch brand in the UK or continental Europe?

Or is the concept a little weird for European old money, which is quite happy to wear double-sided gold cufflinks and the like out of a stronger sense of tradition, without even looking at it as a flashy thing to do?

how about a black metal bracelet? think it would suit to someone mimic the rubber strap or will black metal look weird and scratch weird

That's really not a fair thing to call a Rolex. Like it or not Rolex movements as mechanical movements made in house are among the best in the world for mass produced watches. Probably the best of any movement with that production volume. They meet and exceed all technical expectations and claims which are made about them.

Yes they are "daddy's first I made it watch" but in that vein the are more like a 911 porshe than anything else. They are onlike a useless bit of fashion like a car seat cover

From a strictly horological perspective, you're correct. And they were probably fine to wear in the '50s and even '60s. Someone who collects watches or likes to have them as a chattel that can be discretely sold or bequeathed is fairly justified in having a rolex or two.

bc this was before shit blew up, they did not know they were going to be filming the most iconic watch in history when they made that scene. That is literally a stagehand's watch, Bond was supposed to be at some ritzy social function but he was only there LARPing and gave no fucks about their dress past what it earned him in getting information or what he wanted. So instead of wearing a fancy gold watch like everyone else he was wearing a diver on a cloth strap, because he was a secret agent le sneaky diver man.

It was the gshock of the day, essentially they borrowed the stagehand's gshock. At the time I think a brand new one was $150

holy shit really i did not know that. I always heard it was a stage hand, and that it had either a repo or at least a non factory bezel on it and was actually not in that great of condition and not at the time worth much with no band

You are right that they were more expensive back then, but they were meant to be something a person could afford and were literally a tool. This was before quartz and a decent wristwatch was like having a decent cell phone today. Not cheap but the average man spends a bit on a cell phone because of the functionality he gets from it. A rolex was probably like the iPhone of it's day, not worthless but not exactly uncommon or pretentiously expensive. Yes, marriage stopped working in 1950 after about ten thousand years of clear sailing. Or was it ten thousand years of wife-beating?

Well, whatever, one thing is clear: nature is bad, and children are a terrible burden. Let's buy Apple products and stimulate our ambiguous genitalia with designer vibrators.

If we need a population to support us in our old age, there are less progressive people who can suddenly become progressive but not before they shoulder the horrible burden of reproduction. Which is bad, and which they shouldn't do, but which they should stop doing after we're cremated and our ashes scattered at Coachella.

So anyway, people are getting more and more sane because of vacuum cleaners and smartphones.

At that price point, i'd say type "seiko 5 38mm" into amazon. They make a ton of watches in a lot of varied styles at your price point and below, you can certainly find something there.

If you're willing to spend more than your budget for a more capable watch (water resistant diver, good lume) you can find an SKX013 for right around 200, and put a metal band on it yourself for another ~70 (the miltat one is good).

really though, why do watch fags turn their noses up at quartz watches as though an automatic is something that they can actually experience when they can't even see the insides of what's going on. at least with driving even though you can't see the engine in action you can at least feel and actually experience it.

am I missing something? is people's snobbery for automatic watches all just placebo in their head. the over romanticization of them seems like it's all in their imagination

New crusty shitter day, /wt/. I've had the donor Seiko 5 on the left for a while now, and I really liked how beefy it was compared to every other Seiko 5 model. Unfortunately it's too far gone, the dial is damaged, the case is messed up, and a lot of parts in the movement are worn out, so it's only good as a donor.

So I hunted down a better example of the exact same reference. The one on the right has a flawless dial, a good, not worn-out movement, and a case that only needs a light free-hand polishing to look presentable. Also managed to get a new, parts-matching crystal for it.

Maybe next week I'll get around servicing the movement, replacing the crystal, ultrasonic cleaning the case, and also try to polish out the bezel a bit. This will be my second-to-last watch for a while, I still need to pay customs on a Pre-Bond Seamaster, and then I'm seriously done buying for at least till spring, now I really need to sell some.
