>> No.13736464

Citizen makes pretty good low price watches. They aren't anything amazing but it's a good value for the money if you are happy with quartz. I'm waiting to see what they do with with the caliber 0100. Might pick it up depending on what they put it in. I'd love a 1s/y field watch but that's probably not going to be an option.

Pressing it causes the seconds hand to jump to zero, it allows you easily adjust the watch to exact time. But between about 55 and 5 minutes the button also zeroes the minute hand.

Since this is from the 70's, I guess the most practical application would be to zero the watch at the start of the hour according to the time pips on the radio.

I don't like repeating myself, but:

The SKX007 has very aesthetic proportions. It is popular for a reason, it looks extremely good. Then they decided to make the 013 that were gonna be small, but they fucked up. They haven't kept the same proportions. Now, the watch is too thick compared to the smaller diameter. Like I said, same 4-5mm less in diameter, but the thickness is still the same as the 007. It's not the same proportions anymore. It's now very tall compared to its size, and it looks weird.

Modern Bulova is not great. Their 262khz UHF movement is kind of interesting - a sorta-HAQ movement at a pretty reasonable price. 262khz is to my knowledge the highest frequency quartz oscillator (or indeed any oscillator) used for timekeeping available in any current production watch. The designs are meh. The old Bulova tuning forks are of course excellent with the exception of the 221x series.

So I'm really not a watch person. I actually never wear watches.

But my Dad gave me my grandpa's watch he got at work a long time ago after 35 years of service.
I know it's a Seiko Quartz (because it's written on it duh) and it has my grandpa's name engraved on the back.
On the back it also says "SEIKO base metal Japan z" and a bunch of numbers. Now like I said I'm no watch guy so I have no idea of the quality of this watch. But it has sentimental value to me and I think it looks pretty nice.

Only thing though is that the wrist band is too small for me. Do guys think I could go to a jeweler to add more segments to the wrist band? Do the segments even exist anymore at this point this watch is probably like 50+ years old.

What do you guys think? (sorry for the shitty pic I need to get a new phone)

Rado Captain Cook, Blancpan Fifty Fathoms, Omega Seamaster 300 but obviously these are all much more expensive than the seiko.

Closer to the same price range as a seiko it's tougher though. Some of the Rolex homages are okay. I think the Precista PRS-18q is pretty good value proposition in terms of both function and history but it is quartz.

Yes, why not. Maybe that would be a nicer option, but they tend to be a tad more pricy. I would honestly prefer Omega, after handling hundreds of omegas, hundreds of TAGs, hundreds or maybe thousands of Seikos. I just think that the meme about TAG Heuer is very dumb, because unless you are still angry about the lie with cal. 1887 then there are no good reason to single them out as a bad brand compared to other big swiss brands. I see a lot of hate on TAG for reasons that are simply false. I bet most haven't even studied them under a loupe and compared them to other watches, like mid-tier seikos or omega/rolex. TAG is well-known for good finish, at least the last 10 years, and even more so post 2014, and definitely(!) current new models. I know there are many armchair experts in here, and they can say what they will, but I suspect they haven't studied the finishes under the loupe and compared.

Anyways, I won't rant any more.

I don't nearly wear this fucker enough. Mostly because it's struggling all the time in terms of accuracy. These movements can be in theory really accurate, but they're a nightmare to properly regulate. I tried it again today, and hopefully now it'll work. I have another Cosmotron that runs fucking flawless, and a Seiko Elnix that also runs really good.

Hard to say. There are two main types: coil on the movement, magnet on the balance, and the opposite, coil on the balance, magnet on the movement. Having the coil on the balance makes it way more fragile, but having the heavy magnets on the balance makes it sensitive to inertia.

Plus you have to account for the fact, that a lot of electric designs were made with the idea of lowering production cost, and necessary precision, and not the maximizing of accuracy.

So far I have a West-German PUW, that's very advanced, but also very finicky, fragile and kinda cheap. It has the coil on the balance, and its accuracy is okay. I also have two magnet on the balance designs, one Seiko Elnix, and two Cosmotrons.

In theory, the Elnix is more accurate when worn, and the Cosmotron is more accurate when left static. But in reality there will be so many variables after forty years, that it'll come down to the condition of the individual watch.

Pre-Bond quartz Seamaster 200, 36mm. Bezel and lume is kinda ratty, but I restore my own shit. Got it for bout 230 dollarydoos. Didn't want Mercedes hands, and only the quartz version has sword hands.

Like I said, it looks kinda ratty, but I'll restore it, source a new bezel insert, and either keep it, or resale it. I see this reference floating around for between 750 and 1000, though I don't know if it actually sells for that much. Either way I doubt it'll sell at a loss if I hate it.

I think they are also too chunky to have aesthetic appeal to normies (and, sad as it is, horology is driven by normies now). yeah, the JLC Master-Quartz is sure nice, my fav is the Favre-Leuba version though, quite wearable.

this is a nice watch!
i feel like my 'grail' is maybe the bluesey
i think there are a lot of watches that are probably nicer, but personally i can't see myself wearing them .. AP, PP.. etc and i don't want a watch that i'd wear only a few times a a year.
a gold Rolex is probably as nice as anything i'd want
