The 5S21/5S42 uses a vial of viscous liquid and a hairspring to damp the 4Hz stepper - you can see in that webm >>13702311 that the wheel in the bottom right steps 4 times per second but the wheel closer to the center moves smoothly. It wasn't a very practical design; some surviving examples have a cracked vial and all the liquid has leaked out. I would also not be too surprised if Seiko decided to end the 5S21 line (which they did in roughly 1991) to avoid competing with spring drive.

That said, they're cool watches, and they're not too expensive. The 5S42 is the 20spy HAQ version from the majesta line; the 5S21 is present in a number of case references, labeled dolce, spirit, and others.

1/8 speed on my pulsometer 5S21 to illustrate the truly smooth movement.

These watches have an EOL indicator; instead of the motor ticking at 4Hz, it ticks at 8Hz for 1/2 a second, and then doesn't tick for half a second. You can visibly see the second hand speed up and slow down, though it never comes to a complete rest.

The Bulova 262Khz UFH watches, which step 16 times per second, are probably the closest affordable analog on the market, but they don't have a fancy vial of fluid inside the watch and don't have a truly smooth sweep - they just tick really fast.

a full minute per day is a lot. I believe the 7s26 movement in the skx is rated +40/-20 spd.

A standard benchmark for mechanical watch accuracy is ISO3159, which is tested by COSC in switzerland, among other places. It requires a mean daily rate of +6/-4 across 5 static positions, although it allows significant variations between the positions and makes no particular guarantee about performance on the wrist. Tissot at least has a COSC-certified watch (the powermatic 80 chronometer) available just below $500 gray market.

It uses a pair of index fingers to advance an index wheel twice per complete fork oscillation, unlike other tuning fork watches that advance it only once. My first automatic watch was the orient mako, priced at 120 euros at the time. I timed it to +1min PER MONTH. My seiko spb051, (850 euros, pic related) is about +15s/day. It's always a gamble with these things.

That said, I don't have to rely on precise time keeping on my watch so I don't really care that much, and as I have several watches on rotation, they're always stopped anyway when I put them on.

What kind of watches should I buy for him? I only know that he and his colleagues don't like rolex, so that's out of the question. I know he already have a jeagur lecoultre, does that mean I should go for a different brand so this time around so that he gets variation?

Is this a good alternative to penis quartz?

>> No.13702648

>>13702604
It was a good purchase if you are happy with it. You say you like it.
If you think giving it a service every 10 years is not worth the trouble of owning that watch, then I guess you should sell it. But if you like it enough to keep it around, paying 400 for a service every 10 years, then keep it.
I'm struggling to understand why you feel like an asshole. It's not like you're wearing a rolex. I can understand the stigma to those watches, but a tissot is not that big of a deal I think? Maybe it is where you live perhaps? Anyway, this ultimately comes down to how much you like the watch. If you really think that a service every 10 years is not worth it then sell it and get some of the money back, then buy something else, like one of the cheap quartz you talk about.

Well, 400 us dollars is what I had in mind, and I don't mean that a service has to be that expensive, I just pulled a high number just to be sure I was in the right ballpark. If it's even cheaper then it's even less of a deal to keep it around, I'd say. And yeah, if you do keep it around, and you give it that service every 10 years (no need to do it every 5 years as some will tell you), then you can keep it the rest of your life.

If you LOVE your $300 watch, that's cool. More power to you. I just feel that people buy Tissot because they think they can't afford a better watch. If you simply don't care about better watches, that's cool. But if you like quality you should really look at getting a used Seamaster or even a Longines. Maybe I'm speaking to the wrong crowd now, but I for one think that nobody should overspend on watches. People with less money have more important things to care about. Those with more money have already taken care of the most important stuff, and can afford spoiling themselves with expensive watches.

You truly sound like some kind of elistist. Tissot watches are NOT useless. They just aren't on the same level as those watches you want. And that's true, you are indeed correct. But tho the people with less money, they are not useless. Like you said, you get what you pay for, and these watches are fine for what they are supposed to be, lower end swiss watches. Lower end but still high quality watches will last a lifetime and past a certain amount you have diminishing returns on the price:quality ratio like with everything else. I would rather trust an estabilished Swiss brand than a japanese mostly because when I think of watches I think of Switzerland, when I think of videos of old men pushing eels in schoolgirl's anuses I think of Japan. I spent 680€ for the titanium Tissot automatic and I can't say the watch is in any way not perfect in its construction or finish, it is also pretty accurate and after 1 year I haven't noticed anything wrong with it, I've been measuring it and it gains around 15 seconds per day, the titanium is also very light which is great for a daily driver. I would have appreciated luminescent hands but other than that the watch is literally perfect from what I can tell, and the 80h reserve is very nice because when I wear it every day it survives the weekends unworn just fine. My main issue is that I feel like I overspent, thinking back it was an impulse buy just because I liked the watch and was fascinated by mechanical movements, but honestly there are plenty of cheapo quartz ones that are just as pretty even without the fancy movement make it up with cool features.

Call me a faggot shitter all you want but as much as I like the engineering behind these movements I can enjoy them just fine in YouTube videos without having to own them. I could buy a Rolex tomorrow but I really don't see the value in these items anymore for some reason even though I still like to read about them.

3. You can't brag about since nobody know shit about watch calibers
4. Is inefficient, inaccurate, obsolete (and I mean centuries old obsolete), and requires mainteinance in the (((current year)))

With 400 you can get a high tier quartz chronographer with ridiculous precision (more precise than your pos COSC cronometer that costs 2x the amount with zero complications) and maybe some additional features like solar powered, automatic time sync, full date, titanium construction, and so on. Also if you like the watch but don't want to get it serviced than just don't do it.
Your watch will continue to run, you just increase the "work" for all those gears, because old oils and maybe other micro dirt resulting in a higher risk of damaging something.
Anyways your watch should continue running, I have a few watches from the 60s that never had a service and they are running very good.

If you don't like it than you can sell it for sure, but giving it a service once in a decade should not be too much of an efford.

What gets me about them is that they often rely on having a smartphone near to be actually functional.. Also they seem too small to properly type on.

it's not about seeing it or wanting others to see it. It's not about bragging. It's not about wanting people to think things about the person or their possessions. It's about the horology and the charm of the mechanical beat and the marvel of the minute, precise technology. My wife used to feel that quartz was the best until she got a good mechanical. No question, some quartz are more accurate and a battery change every 3 years (or solar) seems more practical to some but service every 5-10 years may be worth the mechanical

Based on this response I am inferring that you view "expensive" watches as a status symbol with archaic technology. I understand this. But there is also a reason mechanical watches are still around, they have worth that is not as obvious as accuracy, ease, price, and status. I see your clear preferences but you have to agree that others may prefer other things. Nothing wrong with your view but different strokes for different blokes.

It's not elitism, it's about a peculiarity of the Swiss industry. German and Japanese watchmakers are generally the only options for accepting price to quality ratios in the $750 - $3,500 uncanny Valley because all the Swiss brands owned by conglomerates in that price bracket spend more on advertising than manufacturing.
