I'd go to a barbers and ask them to take some weight off the top and maybe a little length off the sides. When you're growing hair out the sides can overtake the top really quickly and give you that 'just took off a bicycle helmet' look. It's also a common thing to think growing hair out means not going to the barbers at all, when a trip now and again to tidy it up can make a world of difference.

Ok lads, I need some advice. I'm growing out my hair shoulder-length (or a bit shorter). I'm currently at 6mo, going through the awkward phase on the sides but that's ok. My problem is that the hair on the top of my scalp is extremely thin, looking like fucking hay. So I can only hear my hair slicked back. Is there anything I can do (aside from snipping the ends, because I don't trust a barber not to cut 3cm off, so I'll wait on that) to make it thicker? I'd love a nice middle part once they're grown out
