yes. better aesthetics than "gaming" laptops and apple

>> No.13693284

Depends on your aesthetic. If you take heavy influence from the 90’s like I do, then an older thinkpad could work. If you are really into norm core or Silicon Valley type thing (tie dye, Hawaiian, ironic graphic tees) a newer thinkpad is cool.

I personally own a t540p and it’s decent

I have the thinkpad x220 and I think from an industrial design and commercial design aspect it is one of the most beautiful machines I have seen. Everything from the materials to the lines to the weight and feel. I have the i7 version I bought in 2011 and I maxed it out. The graphics sucks but it’s not mediocre. I also have the dell XPS 9365 that came out last year and although it is sleek and made of carbon fiber and ultra thin, it just doesn’t feel the same. I work in the tech industry and people compliment my laptop all the time because it’s one of the last good laptops before Lenovo fucked it all up with the chiclet style keys in the x230 and x240 along with the disaster that was the thinkpad x1 carbon. People into industrial design absolutely adore the thinkpad and it’s for a very good reason. I paid 3000$ for mine at brand new but I recently bought an overstock x220 and maxed it out for under 300$ with 16gb of ram, a 512gb msata ssd + 512gb Sata 2.5 ssd. You can also use an eGPU with it through the pci card slot on the side. I currently run it in my office with a 1080 gtx through the e-gpu

the only exception(s) are:

Maybe I am just being a hipster but I find current industrial design so bland that it depresses me. It's so samey and sterile. Metal and glass everywhere. Real tactile feedback from pressing keys and turning knobs has been replaced with dragging your finger over glass. I admit that current smartphones are much, much better to use than phones from back then but they also feel less satisfying. Typing on physical keys on a Blackberry put a smile on my face. It's a small miracle to me that Thinkpads exist still as they are now. Even if they made some changes I don't like like using 16:9 panels, different keyboard layout and losing indicator lights they are still a joy to use. I feel more secure using a Thinkpad with its black plastic-like material than a metal Macbook where I would be afraid of putting a scratch on that smooth aluminium, making a dent somewhere or breaking the glass covering the screen.

x220 is the best laptop ever made and is pretty much the only choice if you are going going for a mr robot esque look. Maybe a t420 but they are bulky and a bit ugly.

Having owned a mbp, xps, and thinkpad420blazeit I’d have to say it depends on who you are. As a computer scientist, I’ve found the 420 to be the most ergonomic, nicest looking, reliable, and compatible for my purposes, given that both the dell and the mbp started breaking down after two years. The 420 has broken down, but since it is modular I’ve been able to replace/upgrade every part of it, even the screen, without the need to buy a new laptop. It also is able to run both openBSD and plan9 due to hardware compatibility. But getting a thinkpad if you don’t know what your doing is try hard and uneffay. The laptop you get should show your purpose. The only thing I hate about Apple and windows/dell is the uneccessary frills at both the hardware and application level (backlit keyboards, iMovie).

>> No.13694787

>>13693924
They have an ips upgrade as well as a 4K upgrade option. You just need to buy a little adapter online. Louis rossman did a video on it on YouTube. The IPS panel is native to the laptop, just costs like 50$, 1080p and 4K is a little more expensive for obvious reasons but the screen size is perfect for me.

Who takes the processor and windows stickers off their laptops? Are you stupid?

>> No.13694820

>>13694757
Totally agree. The tx20 line is great, the x220, t420 and t520 are some of the last best designed ones before Lenovo tried to be more “mainstream” and did stupid shit like a single touchpad with no buttons or tried to get rid of the track point. I own a MacBook Pro 15 inch, which good for music and movies, nice screen, I bought it because most of my clients have MacBooks and I need it for them specifically, but I did notice the aluminum is soft and the excessive need for dongles makes it inconvenient for me. I do a lot of professional photography as a side job and I noticed OS X is better for entertainment and media production more than anything. Photoshop, after effects, final cut, everything about the OS seems media oriented), I also own an XPS 13 which is my on the go laptop, it’s a workhorse, only thing I don’t like is the y7 instead of i7 processor and how it’s all passively cooled, beautiful laptop, and I have my x220 and p50 workstation. The x220 is just amazing, I upgraded the display and I use this in the field since it has pretty much any connection I need and I have a pci express card adapter for when I need a serial connection to a server, and it also has an Ethernet port which is CRUCIAL in the tech industry. Sure there’s dongles but no thanks. The x220 also runs OSX but why? I have both a Linux distro and windows running on the x220 and “it just works”, unlike my MacBook which often has kernel panics. So yeah OP, get something that fits your workflow. the one in your image is the x220t which is the tablet edition, becomes a tablet, has an integrated Wacom touch screen with the included pen for drawing, it is a good one but I’d avoid the tablet variants as the screens are idk. The traditional thinkpads are generally amazing and anything newer than the t420 or t520 or x220 is different and definitely built cheaper. Although I love my p50, it’s not how thinkpads used to be. And you can buy older variants for much cheaper.

>>13694470
4:3 panels are ideal, I prefer them over 16x9 but seeing that most workspaces are now designed to be side by side on a single screen instead of one large square screen you kind of have to learn to adapt. But I do miss how my old thinkpad t40 had that single large square screen

Also depends on the size you need by the way. At the bottom is an hp dv7, then a mbp 15, white MacBook, x220, XPS 9365 and a little eeepc ontop. 12-13 inches seem the perfect size for a screen and 14 is my cutoff. But every laptop has a different purpose

Tried the t540p not too long ago, got this one for only 110$ because it has a Spanish keyboard, it felt hollow and plasticky and it didn’t have the trackpoint buttons or physical buttons or indicator lights. I wasn’t too fond of it and sold it off that same week

Yes, absolutely. Anything plain and function-oriented can be /fa/ in the right context. A Thinkpad fills its niche perfectly, just as Apple laptops fill theirs. This is from someone who has never owned either; I use a samsung ativ book 9 plus, which I also consider a truly beautiful laptop.

Upgrade to 16gb of RAM. It seems like overkill but knowing your old thinkpad has more ram and runs faster than most modern ultra portables is so satisfying. I praise my x220 for all t is but the x240 does seem a lot faster performance wise. But it’s not noticeable for most people and the new Lenovo keyboards are complete garbage.
