On the assumption that you made this pic after they were serviced, I did a little looking into what kind of amplitude those should have .

From what I can tell 1688 based hi-beat movements should have ~280-290 amplitude dial up, which suggests to me that the issue on both of those could be that they have worn mainspring barrels that are limiting their amplitudes.

Have you considered whether that might be the cause of the performance issues you've been having with both of those?

>> No.13679138

>>13679132
It seems plausible I guess. My main consideration is that this isn't really acceptable performance immediately after a service.

Have you seen any indication of what kind of power reserve these should have? I can take them off the winder and see how long they last.

>> No.13679148

>>13679138
I'll look into that. I did manage to find this report of a guy who serviced a Zodiac SST which showed ~280-290 degrees amplitude after a barrel replacement, and apparently barrels wearing out was a known issue on Zodiac SSTs:

http://watchguy.co.uk/service-zodiac-sst-36000/

http://www.vintagezodiacs.com/zforums/index.php?topic=2134.0

I don't know if the 32a's had sealed barrels as well, but it does seem to indicate that mainspring barrel wear was a known issue on at least some of the 1688 based hi-beat auto variants.

You Guys! I actually did it! I found the cheapest mechanical shitter alternative to a Rolex Explorer! I bought this HMT Poonata 5 years ago on Ebay for $12. It came with the ugliest strap I've ever seen and I never could find a a strap that went well with it so I mostly forgot about it. I was cleaning out a junk drawer today and found this metal bracelet that I have no recollection what it came from. Then I had a stroke of genius. The proportions look about right, the numbers at 12, 3, 6, & 9. It was meant to be.

The SJE073J1 is slighly thinner, so there are differences, but the level of finishing is the same, and the movement is only a slight improvement. You cannot get away with the fact that titanium is way better too. Not to mention that the finish on a titanium watch is WAY more impressive. What a fantastic job they did on the sarx.

Wrong. The SJE is externally finished to GS standards including zaratsu polishing, obviously crisper brushed to polished transitions, and heat blued second hand instead of painted,

>And I guess a bit older movement, the 6R15.
The 6L35 is an ETA 2892-A2 top grade competitor. It is on another planet than the 6R15.

Titanium has properties that are better in a tool watch, buy for a dressy sports watch I see no reason to unduly prefer it unless you strongly prefer light watches.

>and heat blued second hand instead of painted,
Fair enough.
But you are paying 1000 dollar more for a watch that is not really that different. Small improvements over the SARX. Movement is from what I can gather not on the level of ETA 2892-A2 top grade, but +15 to -10 seconds per day is quite OK.

>Even if they did something more with the SJE, I can't imagine you will notice it with your eye.
I can notice it by eye in the pictures.

While you are correct that the same department makes both cases and bracelets, every polished surface on the SJE case is zaratsu polished like a GS, while the SARX models don't usually have any zaratsu polishing. That adds a fair bit of skilled labour to the finishing or the SJE case and bracelet, not even accounting for the crisper GS tier brushing.

The hands and indices will also have GS tier finishing which the SARX versions won't have, again because it would add too much to the cost of the case and bracelet.

>Movement is from what I can gather not on the level of ETA 2892-A2 top grade,
That's literally what the 4Lxx family was designed for originally, Seiko originally planned to market it as a drop in alternative to the 2892-A2 top grade in the ebauche market, but sales at the time weren't good enough so they sold the 4L to Soprod who did fairly well selling it as the Soprod A10, a highly regarded ETA 2892 too grade competitor that sold well in $3k watches as soon as you concealed it's Japanese origins to Swiss watch buyers.

The 6L is an updated version that improves upon the 4L by adopting Seiko's in-house high end shock protection system and a few other small changes.

The 6Lxx also requires massively more skilled labour to manufacture, assemble, and adjust than the 7S/4R/6R family, and 4L based watches had to be priced similarly to 2892 top grade models from the very beginning, which was why Seiko sold the rights the first time.

Seiko typically uses more conservative accuracy ratings than other movement makers and their -10/+15 rated movements have performed similarly to ETA top grade movements since even before the quartz revolution.

There's nothing to be embarrassed about in a world where most people wear quartz, fakes, fashion watches or nothing on their wrists. You might be in a position in your lifetime to afford high end watches but you will always remember your first Seiko. The Seiko 5 is an honest watch for the honest man with no need for hacking, winding or batteries.

Is the stem broken or is it another issue (like, dunno, crown stuck in case)?
Anyway swatches are designed to be disposable and can't be opened without breaking the case. This is why I hate them.
These plastic watches saved the Swiss industry during the quartz revolution, but they're overpriced because of " muh swiss made" and they lack a feature that even the cheapest of the fake casio f-91w has

Or the same watch, but with the deprectiation hit by someone else. In alternative from a grey market seller from chrono24 or something with buyer protection

(a little rant: dear fucking god i hate modern tag heueue
they were the first to start the vintage watch market craze with reissues of vintage chronos and adversiting of auctions, and now even other watches that kinda look like Autavias have doubled in price
it's a thing that has to be blamed on most of high end watch maisons now but they started the trend(fuck tudor too)
