agreed.
After reading an article of the 5100 movement I came to the conclusion, that this would be perfect chrono for me, because I don't give a fuck about caliber finishing.

my favorit sentence of that article
>All in all, the 5100 is the movement equivalent of the million-mile-capable Mercedes OM602 2.5 diesel engine. It ain’t pretty, but it’ll run for ever and if you’ve got a 15mm spanner and a hammer you can fix it. For example, there’s no need to dismantle the whole movement to get to the barrel. Just pull out the central arbour and you’ve freed it.

It goes beyond even those virtues. The Lemania 5100 is the most shock resistant mechanical chronograph movement ever made because the chronograph is directly driven, it has a central register chronograph minute hand, and has a vertical clutch combined with the more robust cam actuated design.

It really is a marvel of functional mechanical engineering.

Some of the really unusual stuff going on. The rotor is six-pole, instead of the usual two-pole (I've done the Citizen 8620 before, which had an 8-pole rotor), and the stators are (for some reason) adjustable by eccentric posts.

The connecting ribbon for the coil block is also pretty flimsy, but I managed to fix that.

Also this movement doesn't even have a trimmer cap, you need to swap out a tiny capacitor with a different one. I think these caps may have been proprietary Seiko caps, and I have no idea what their values might be, so the one it came with will have to stay in.

Here's the next page: The second wheel has an adjustable indexing finger, which is not that unusual for the time, and the wheel is driven immediately by the rotor, which on the other hand is pretty unusual. I guess this is the advantage of having a six-pole rotor.

Furthermore the rotor has a the-leaf cam for hacking, but since the rotor is six-pole, this means you can only hack the watch the NEXT EVEN. Fucking crazy!

Also the third wheel jewel on the dial side is adjustable by an eccentric, which is fucking nuts, and I suspect it might be the main source of my problems. I'll try running the movement tomorrow with only the rotor and second wheel.

Also the electronic section is really convoluted and not very intuitive, with a bunch of plastic insulating, contact springs, and even a blue wire running under the battery insulator, it's like Seiko was still figuring out just how to lay out the electronics, as they were finalizing the design.

But I really like this movement, I already got another one, and won an auction for a day-date 3803 just recently.

Not sure if this is a good place to ask, but I was looking for some advice.

My dad has always been sort of into watches. He has/had Cartier, Breitling, Omega and some other stuff I don't even know. He's getting old now and I'd have to decide what to get him for his next anniversary birthday which is 80 in a few years.

I have this reoccurring idea of getting him something like pic related. (I'm not into watches at all, but I guess this is the standard watch that everyone wants or whatever) The thing is just that I'm a failure and don't earn much money. I could afford it, but it would tear a huge hole in my life. The other thing is that (and please don't hate me for it) I find this obsession with materialism absolutely ridiculous. To me personally, it's just a worthless piece of metal with an ancient purpose. Any phone or any 10€ plastic crap watch is more accurate than a Rolex. I think my dad is just from a generation which really projected through these things and I would not know anything else to get him.

Part of me rejects this stupid, irrational idea, but on the other hand, maybe this is his last round birthday before he dies and maybe I will look back at it and regret not giving it to him for the rest of my life. Also I could never sell it after his death, because it would remind me too much of him, so 'you can get some money back' is not an option.

I feel very conflicted about this and it has been bothering me for a long time to be so thoughtful about this conflict of materialism vs idealism.

What advice could you give me?

A Rolex Sub is pretty unoffensive and he's very unlikely to dislike it if he's actually into watches, interest in them is typically a range from "meh" to "oh my fuck it's the best watch ever". It's a safe pick if you don't know what you're doing. Just don't get the no date version though as it's fucking gay. Also, in case you don't know, there's typically a wait list for steel Rolexes. Depending on how soon his birthday is it might not even be an option unless you want to pay 25% over list, but this depends where you live. If you decide on one you need to go to a couple of ADs in person (phoning is a waste of time) and offer to put a deposit down on one (they won't take it but it shows you're interested).

Maybe anons could give you a better idea if you had a pic of his collection, saying brand names doesn't really mean much as it's not just like brands make one type of watch.

Sorry my response was rude, but what's the point of having a power reserve indicator in a normal quartz watch? The battery lasts for 3 years, no point making a indicator for that.

Oh, and the reason for the swatch having non hacking seconds hand is just that the swiss were lazy designing that and swatches are pieces of shit.

man I was really torn for a while between the super contemporary tooly pelagos and the softer more charming black bay, but the pelagos kept drawing me back in, it's much more 'me' with its monochromatic utilitarian aesthetic. I would love to also own the black bay but I think in the coming years i'll be looking at the seiko presage (picking it up in japan this december), the sinn 104 as a daily driver and then something obvious like a speedmaster to finalize the collection.
