I am seriously thinking about sending some casio plastic watch frames/cases/whatever you call it to some chinese manufacturers and asking them to make the the same exact thing in stainless and seeing how much it costs per unit. I would then just buy casios and put them in my new nice cases and try to make about $25-50 per watch, maybe include a decent nato (buy them in bulk, let there person pick a color).

I think people would pay $50-$150 (depending on the model) for casio quality internals and a nice SS case.

What makes a watch a pilot watch? How does it differentiate from a normal non-pilot watch when they both seems to have same function?

An example I can add is this Oris Pilot watch. It shows the time and the date just like a normal watch. Nothing else I can make of it to call it a pilot watch.

It's usually in the readability and resistance
Pilots are usually a bit bigger than normal watches (I think Luftwavve navigators had a +50 mm one to keep on their belt) to allow for greater readability
In your example it has a negative dial and big bold numbers

One thing to think about is the purpose of the watch. Is it to be one that you want to keep long-term, is it one that you want to pair with a suit, is it one you want to actually dive with, etc.? Divers in general are easily the most popular iteration of the wristwatch sold today, so that means you have a VERY large selection to choose from. Help us narrow down the purpose of the watch (and if it's something you want to pass down or something you see as semi-disposable).

Generally the staff is very friendly and is happy to show anything you want (as a casually dressed 20 something I've bad no trouble trying on 300k+ watches). You should note the skx is iso-rated, since that's one of its main draws.
The 4r36 is rated +/-6spd? I'm very surprised, this is almost certainly wrong
The miyota 9015 is definitely not rated 3spd, what universe are you living in.
You should recommend the snk80x, not just one of them.
You left out a bunch of watches I recommended that I think belong on the guide.

I think watches in general are valued too high. It's kind of weird that almost nobody can own and appreciate most of the real watches out there, yet the tech and manufacturing is not really that sophisticated anymore by today's standards. The handcraftmanship is really the only thing we ought to pay extra dosh for, but not in the tens of thousands, and certainly not in the hundreds of thousands. If you think about it, we get something that is 1000 times more complex and technologically advanced, like a car, for the same amount of money.

Most people enormously underestimate the amount of skilled hand labor and the attendant cost of that labour that goes into making high end production watches and especially haute horlogerie watches.

Even someone like Rolex has to spend a fortune on R&D and capital investments to try and save labour because hitting their desired production volumes using the amount of hand labour Grand Seiko, Zenith, and entry level JLC use us simply not practical.

>> No.13651783

>>13651741
Yes, so? I'm not complaining about the relative prices between watches, I'm saying watches in general, all watches should be worth only like 10% of what they are priced.

I wonder how many hours of handcraftwork there is on one of those Lange watches. Let's say it is 20 hours, a very high number. That means the work is worth tops 2000. And the technology is really not worth much, so let's say the lange is worth 2500. Let's just say 3000 so that they get a profit off of it too. Heck, 3500!! Wow, they are making big bucks, they should be celebrating now. There, that's a good price for a Lange.

Now instead we get these ricidulous high prices of 40k Who in their right mind thinks that a Lange is as much worth as a ferrari? I'm just asking... Yeah of course if the market is willing to pay blabla, but the market is really just going with the flow isn't it. Nobody if pressed, will honestly believe that they get as much for the money when buying a Lange, as they would get buying a LAMBORGINI. And that's my point. The relative price point of watches is too high when comparing it to other technologies.

You really don't understand the quantities of hand labour involved here. There are likely more than 20 hours of hand labour in each component of the movement, at least several hundreds of hours of skilled hand labour in the movement as a whole.

Making a Lamborghini requires only a tiny fraction of the skilled hand labour that making a Lange does.

It's obviously, transparently false. I googled Lange watch and the first hit was an 1815 chrono with over 300 components in the movement alone and an MSRP of 49k eur. If each component requires 20 hours of skilled labor that's completely uneconomical.

Lange makes fantastic watches and their watches are very competitive on a relative basis with other watches at the price point but this 20 hours per component thing is ridiculous.

A Piaget minute repeater has 1400 hours of hand finishing, according to https://timeandtidewatches.com/insight-the-watchmaking-of-piaget/ :

"All this work means that even a basic baseplate can take two to three days to complete, while a minute repeater movement takes 1400 hours of finishing."

If a Piaget minute repeater has 1400 hours of hand finishing, then my original estimate of around 700 hours of hand finishing for a Lange chronograph seems to be in the right ballpark.

I think that sure, something like a $70k Patek is ridiculous, no matter how many rare materials are in there, but up to a point, maybe $8k-10k, there are plenty of watches which are built with a ton of craftsmanship and have very good movements and materials, etc, which are probably worth it. A mechanical watch is a complex to manufacture item, especially if it's reliable and durable and well crafted. If we're talking about watches made of solid gold or platinum or whatever, then that number can be bumped to 20k I think. There are pieces of jewellery which cost as much because gold/platinum/diamonds are just expensive to source.

At some point, it's worth what it's worth because we as a society agree on that. A significant reason to buy a Rolex is that technically, it's free, since the resale on even a 10 year old sub is the same as MSRP. It's retarded, but there you go.

I can believe it. I was told by Lange it took 5 years to make this watch. That is all the time to produce the parts, case, dial, the QA of each of those, the incredible level of the finishing etc

It takes a skilled watchsmith to put together the over 300 moving parts to do the final testing and accuracy rating. If the accuracy doesn't fit within an acceptable range the take the entire watch apart and validate everything to find the fault. Once they finally have a watch that's working to tolerance they take it apart and do it all again just to be sure!

If what you say is true, then there would have to be 250 000 days in one year, or maybe 500 000 days in one year if they spend more than 1 day per balance cocks, since Rolex produces one million watches per year (maybe closer to 2 million now) - honestly it's mostly just machines building them from scratch.

Well, I'm interested in knowing the amount of handcraftship a normal 50k patek or whatever brand watch has for its production.

Whatever that number, the cost of paying those people, are the value of that watch, + a little bit of value for the VERY simplistic technology, say tops $1000 + the material, say tops $1000

If that amounts to 50k ... then OK, I'm gonna be shocked. Somehow I think you guys want to believe that watches are not overpriced. And I'd say you are deluding yourself. Obviously the market has pushed the prices for watches skyhigh for the last 50 years. But then again, you will refuse to agree with me forever and ever, so I think the ball is about to be dead.

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

There is still a fair amount of hand labour in the finishing and assembly of high-quality production watches like Jaeger Le Coultre's entry level models, Grand Seiko, Zenith and so on.

Rolex spends tons of money on R&D and capital investments in plants and equipment to be able to achieve comparable levels of movement quality to GS, JLC and Zenith without using that hand labour because Rolex simply has too much volume to do it the way those other brands do.

The perfect example of the costs involved in making high quality production watches from scratch is Nomos going from charging ~$1,500 for watches based on semi in-house Presaux 7001 based movements to having to charge ~$4,000 for fully in-house watches because they needed over 10 million Euros in capital investments to be able to gain the ability to design and produce their own escapements in series.

My focus in discussing watch prices generally tends to be "does a watch compare favorably to other watches at its price point?". If you're trying to get a handle on a haute horlogerie watch being an objectively efficient way to spend money then I don't think anyone would argue that it is.

No one here wouldn't say that haute horology level watches aren't expensive. Of course they are.

However saying they are overpriced isn't all about the materials. A Rolls Royce is the same. You pay for the hand construction and level of finishing, the exclusivity, limited production and as a status symbol. If you have the money to many it's worth it.

So (rolex wholesale) are trying to make about $2000-$3000 and leave $1000 or so for the retailer to make.
