Assuming you're talking about watches that use mainsprings as the source of energy, I believe it still holds the record (with 11 mainsprings, it had sort of better). Parmigiani had a concept watch with a 70 day reserve but I don't think it ever made it to commercial production. De Bethune and greubel forsey had plans for exotic long pr designs as well but I don't think they've made it to the wroking prototype stage.

I always hated wearing watches but recently on vacation i bought a shitty fake iwc from some darky and now i like watches and want to get started on the path.

here are some watches i like.

some chronographs are cool if they're not too loud, but i like clean and simple.

I'm aware this is a list of memes and shit tier watches, but it gives an idea of what case design i like and dials i like.
the explorer looks sexy but i don't like the raised crystal.
i'm a wristlet at 6.5 - 6.75" so dont want anything to big

I only want to spend a few hundred dollars max for my first purchase.

Any recommendations?

It's a GMT function, you set it to another time zone so you know the time in two countries (three if the watch also has a rotating 24 hour bezel).

Looks like the shit you're into is somewhere between dress and field watches. You could try a Hamilton or something of the sort.

Then your choices are quite limited. If it helps I made a list of watches that I would consider viable choices that can be bought new for under 300usd.

No problem.

I LOVE the 16710, it's, in my non-expert opinion, the best incarnation of the GMT. I like the "pepsi" version, personally.

The most popular Rolex models tend to be the sub and gmt. The Stainless steel Oyster sports watches, in general, tend to hold their value well. The GMT and Submariner especially.

If he has the original box and papers, he could probably squeeze at least a few extra hundred out of the deal if he ever decided to sell it. If he has kept it maintained by either a Rolex Service Center, or even an indie with a Rolex Spare Parts account, that has replaced any worn out bits with genuine Rolex parts, he's in very good shape.

Anyway, I'm kinda drunk, I love the 16710. Good for your dad.

The new giant crown ruins the proportions, despite being technically more pragmatic for quick setting when changing timezones.

When looking at watches you reaaaally need to try and put the band/bracelet out of mind. It's much easier said than done even for seasoned collectors... whatever is on the watch in the picture seeps into the crevices of your mind and can influence how you feel about the watch.

I think the Rolex explorer as it appears in most photos with the steel bracelet is boring as fuck and even ugly, but on a leather band it becomes classy and elegant.

Just look for the watches/cases you like, buy it and then stick whatever strap/band/bracelet you like on it, ideally after googling for pics of the watch with said bands.

You have a point, but that can be a weird double edged sword.

I've come across a fair amount of dudes in cheap clothes; wrinkled polo or tee shirts, jeans, ball cap with genuine Rolexes on their wrists. Usually older guys though, so it kinda makes sense.

However, you'll see a lot of young dudes who make a serious effort to look nice in some trendy name brand shit, usually driving a newish Japanese luxury car, and the Rolex they're wearing is a fairly obvious counterfeit.

I've seen these things so many times. It's interesting.
