Don't wear more than 1 camo piece unless actually OPERATING. Stay away from O.D. and greens. Tactical black is meh but with right accessories you can swing it. Lately, more and more tacticool stuff comes out in various greys or 2-tone combos (MAS Grey, Urban Wolf, 5.11's Double Tap, etc.)

Trend away from G.I. stuff towards either vintage (2+ generations behind current G.I.) or newest high-tech gear. The smaller makers are incorporating lot of techwear materials and design cues, and techwear itself trends towards "tacticool" in places. Serious outdoors\techwear brands have tactical lines or sub-brands (e.g. Arcteryx LEAF, Sivera LYNX).

Buy well-fitting stuff and\or have it tailored for a more streamlined silhouette. Especially avoid\fix billowing cargo pockets. You don't need a pocket to fit a medkit or 4 mags, and if you do, worrying about fashion is on the bottom of your priorities.

Consider how your outfit works, not just how it looks. "Tactical" is about function first, looks last. Few things are more funny than velcros randomly stuck to each other on a teenaged mall ninja. On the same note, keep it tight and clean. Trim and tuck webbing, secure adjustment loops, remove the parts you don't need. One can tell the difference between a boy and a man just by looking at someone's backpack and seeing a fluffy trail of ribbons, or lack thereof.

Look for startups. Some vet starting a sewing shop in his garage to capitalize on his combat experience won't have the brand value to surcharge you for.

If you're 'murrican and want to really stand out on the cheap, look into the Russian stuff. For example, Sivera is an outdoor brand on par with Arc'teryx in terms of tech and attention to detail. Their stuff is tested to Everest and back, and has some interesting know-how in it.

Even more interesting are small-batch\custom gear shops like Gear Craft and VOIN, operating out of warehouses and vk.com public pages, yet boasting patronage from actual major league Russian door-kickers and sandnigger-shooters. I've seen them go from "support your local" Crye Precision rip-offs for airsofters to original designs based on feedback from actual OPERATORS and even truly innovative pieces well ahead of the global game.

If nothing else, rocking an obscure Russian camo pattern like SurPat will get heads turning at a local /k/ meetup.
