Already took this fucker apart today. I checked the quartz crystal with a multimeter while it was still together, and indeed this isn't a 32kHz crystal, but a 16kHz.

Also it uses this weird early method for regulation, where you have to stick different capacitors into the different holes. I'll have to read up on how that works, but originally you had to order the caps separately from Seiko.

Other angle, quite a tasteful movement. I read up a bit on it, and after very limited production run of the 35 Quartz Astron (100 watches), 35SQW (1800) and 36 (1000 pieces) movements, this 38 series in 1971 is when Seiko first started dipping their toes into real quartz mass-production. Mine is from 1973, so it isn't that crazy early.

This is the only part that I found to be broken so far, one tooth on the setting-lever gear is gone, most likely because the cannon-pinion is pretty much seized. The watch would be fully functional still, but I already found a replacement part at a reasonable price that I'm going to order.

Also found a picture of a 3803. The blue wire is there too. What an odd way to design it. Maybe they figured out late that the previous solution wouldn't work for some reason, but there was no time for a complete redesign, so they just went with soldering in a wire?

At least it's repairable, if something happens to the wire, you can solder it out and put any electrical wire in its place.

14270 or 114270 and why?
Not sure, the endlinks on the 114270 are what make me gravitate towards it. Apparently the movement can take more of a beating as well. Regarding price the 114270 looks like the better deal?!

The actual crystal is 33, and the edge of the rotating bezel is 41mm, the 44mm cushion case is very low and close to the skin, so it really just wears like any other 41/42mm watch imo

This is wearing on a 6.75inch wrist, as you can see it's just a little too big. I think a 7 inch wrist can get away with it.

What were clocks and watches synchronized to back in the day, before radio and telegraph? Or was the timing of technologies such that railway, radio, telegraph, and timepieces came together around the same time?

I can only imagine people would synchronize their pocket watches to the train station, trains would synchronize from a master station that wasn't so far away that watches would go out of time, and... where did the master station synchronize from?

>> No.13621419

>>13621408
The master station was synchronized based on the speed of the chirping of crickets near London England for a 30 second period. That would then be multiplied by 16 to convert the time to a 24 hour format.

>where did the master station synchronize from?
Noon, dummy.

But little care was given to be precise, what need do you have to know what time it is X number of miles away if you don't have radio or telegraph? It wasn't that long ago that England basically had multiple timezones due to how hard it is to synchronise shit like this.

unless you're talking about the very small number of watches with actual atomic clocks, atomic/radio are the same, they sync to radio waves broadcast from laboratories with atomic clocks.

The alternative is a GPS watch, which gets its time signal from GPS satellites, rather than earth-based radio. They work anywhere in the world, not just in range of the 5 atomic radio stations.

>> No.13621466

>>13621457
Basically the same thing

The radio types dictate how many frequency bands you can hear in a given region, weather it be 5 or 6 which is the most common.
Like with any radio you have to have a good enough signal for reception, so you have to live near enough to a tower to get the signal.
Atomic means there's a radio recover in the watch to pick up the signal from the nearest tower to an atomic clock, which is an extremely accurate time keeping machine that every other time keeping device is measured off of.

In the US it's typically the atomic clock in Fort Collins Colorado.

the lange looks like SS on a model that is only in PM, and it looks like shit SS as well. similar with the patek - looks like cheap AF SS.

If you get a field model like the SNK then yes, but there are some that are less loud that could be fine - check out seiko 5 finder. Tissot visodate/le locle is the general watch people get when they want to have muh swiss mechanical in a business setting but don't really actually have any money yet. I can't really recommend them from a technical basis. You can stretch to a Hamilton Intramatic with a 2892 movement, which is probably the best mechanical movement available at that price point.

For my next tax return I am thinking pic related, I love most things about it except for a few quirks. One the bezel, I would prefer it has the Explorer I bezel. Two the indices need more illumination, same for the hands. Another thing I worry about is people are going to see it as the poorfag Rolex.

An alternative is the Explorer I 214270 2017 edition, but I am not a fan of the Submariner hands. Plus the matte gray dial makes it more of a tool watch than a dress watch. I do prefer the clasp and bezel from the Explorer I.

> Case material
Precious metals cases, most obviously, contribute to the value of a watch
> Movement
The quality of a movement is dictated by the care with which it was made, the materials that were used, the finishing that was applied, etc. Movements with complications will generally be worth more.
> External finishing
The degree of finish on the parts of the watch you can see. Are the indices applied or printed? Does the dial have guilloche or patterns? The case, the bracelet, the hands all go into this as well.
> Rarity
Rarity does not in itself make a watch valuable - the hundreds of "limited edition" microbrands are not more valuable for having been limited. That said, rarity of a particularly significant watch can make it more valuable.
> Marketing
This doesn't drive the value of a watch, but it can drive the price.

I can almost tell the look that you're trying to go for, you're just not quite there yet.

If you're into plaid, stick to straight up flannel, LL bean has the good shit. Get a slightly darker color pair of jeans, and get nicer boots. The watch and the knife are pretty nice.

Also a tip, if you're going for an Americana look, never wear it all at once. The whole point of fashion is to take inspiration from certain aesthetics, and make it your own thing. I just don't want you out there walking around like a 2013 meme.

But not even really sold on the 556i yet, I mean if I could get a 656 or a limited edition 556/656 I would get that instead. Will see around october (my birthday).
There are two thing certain for now:

What could be more cliche than a Rolex? Tudor is the same but different. I'm more of an IWC fan anyways

I didn't think so.. I don't care much for the armitron but I like the Swiss military style ones even though the faces are chipped..

Is the middle swiss watch a victorinos? Than it may be some good piece but otherwise they propably are not that good.

new armitron watches are 50-100$ so that one is clearly shit

I think the two top ones are Wenger Brand. Swiss made. They are pretty good nothing fancy. I particularly like the day date one. I'd change that to a strap. looks handsome.

The day date one is a Wenger. The middle one is a victorinox. I just like the way they look. They both need new batteries and replacement faces. That is a good idea about the strap that would look good.

victorinos is a good brand wich made a few watches I quite like. If you realy like it you could get a new crystal and be propably be happy with it for a while.
