If you are going to have only one watch you probably need a mid to high tier quartz. Here is why:

You cant have an only watch that cant take a beating (sports, swimming, etc) or that need to be sent for days/weeks to get a service. So mechanicals are out of the question. Solar/Eco Drive or Kinetic would be good, but regular quartz is ok too (easy to replace a battery) and more livelong lasting normally.

You need the watch to be dressy or at least aceptable for most outfits, from shorts and sneakers to at least business, so digitals are out too.

Some features for the puntual need such as chronograph or diving bezel to time things, date or day-date, alarm, good lume can come in handy. WR of at least 50m and preferably 100m is a must too.

All things considered id go for a Seiko Kinetic Alarm-Chronograph (or quartz if Kinetics are too big). Or if you want something cooler but with less features a Seamaster 300m quartz or a Breitling Shark Chrono quartz or something like that; they come in different sizes.

If you're a turbo-wristlet they do a ladies Seamaster 300m which is 28mm & quartz.

Where I live almost everyone cares about watches more or less. When they compliment each others daniel wellington watches, they also take the time to compliment my more expensive watches too. Sometimes they are impressed and want to hold and feel it because they haven't handled a luxury watch before, so they want to out of curiousity. To me it's a symbol for achieving something in life, a gift to myself. I like the history of the brand, the status plays a small part. It's also a childhood dream for me. From the first time I saw James Bond wearing a Seamaster I wanted to have one and now I do, and I couldn't be happier with it. This will probably sound douchy, but there is a certain recognition from peers and even strangers that are succesful in life when they look at my wrist, which makes me motivated to achieve more.

I am on that page. I love them, it's charming, it's status, they're nice looking. Most of all I love the mechanics inside them that makes them tick. It's what I spend my money on. I don't pay big money just to know the time, that much is obvious to anyone.

But that's just it. In a quartz watch you are kind of paying for not much more than the time. You don't have the mechanics to love in it. It's just dull. And why pay a ton of money for that? I wouldn't. Maybe you would. But I wouldn't.
