I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Black Bay, is in fact, Replica/Black Bay, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, "Shitter".
The genuine Tudor Black Bay is not a bad watch itself, but rather another meme dive watch, Rolex made by put together left-over parts, screws and other components, resulting a full watch defined by very insensitive marketing.
Many watch fuckers wear a replica versions of the Black Bay wristwatch every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the replicas of the Black Bay which is widely worn today are often called “Shitters”, and many of its users are not aware that it basically makes them gay instantly, intensifying their desires to suck cock while wearing their Fake Tudor.
There really are better watches for cheaper, like Seikos, and these people aren't buying those, but it is just a part of their gay nature.

A rattrapante (also called split second) is a kind of stopwatch or chronograph with two second hands. The hands initially move together. The user can active the split-second mechanism to stop one of the hands to take a reading without interrupting the timing.

A normal chronograph works using a heart cam; the second hand has a heart cam attached to it, and to reset the second hand, a hammer pushes against the heart cam until the second hand returns to the starting position. The hammer is fixed to the case/movement plate, and the heart cam is fixed to the second hand.

In a rattrapante, the additional split-second hand moves with the normal chrono hand until the pusher activates. At that point, a pawl closes around a wheel and holds it in place, holding the split-second hand in place. There is no disengaging of any gears! It's simply the pawl opening and closing.

>>13581477
The way it works is the same mechanism as the standard reset. The split-second hand is not connected to the main chrono train by gears. Instead, it has a spring pushing against a hammer that pushes up against the heart cam on the normal second hand. In normal operation, the tension in the spring keeps the hammer engaged on the heart cam, and the hammer is physically connected to the split-second hand, so the split second hand runs. When the pawl closes, the wheel connected to the split-second hand is held in place with more force than the spring holding the hammer in place is able to exert, so the hand stops, and the hammer starts sliding against the heart cam. Once the pawl is released, the spring on the hammer now restores the split-second hand to being in line with the normal chrono hand. This explains why the split-second hand appears to whip around a bit - it is essentially undergoing a chrono reset, but instead of the heart cam moving and the hammer staying fixed, the heart cam stays fixed to the chrono second hand (which is in turn held in place by the chrono gear train), and the hammer, spring, and wheel holding the split second hand move to be in line with the heart cam.

For a long time, the citizen 5800 was the hairspring-regulated watch with the fastest beat rate in the world, at 43,200bph. However, because of the design of the escapement, it did not have the fastest-beating second hand. While most hairspring watches are driven by the mainspring, electric watches are driven from the balance wheel. This has a number of advantages - the much lower torque in the geartrain is a big one, since it results in less wear on the parts. One consequence is that the escapement design is generally different. In the Citizen electronic watches, an indexing system is used which only advances the hands every other oscillation. As a result, the hand ticks 6 times per second, compared to the 12 times you'd expect from a 43,200bph balance with a swiss lever escapement. As a result, the 36k 32A from 1966 still held the record for fastest beating hairspring-regulated watch for a long, long time.

The yield strength of sapphire is in the neighborhood of 2.25 GPa.
The yield strength of mineral glass is around 75 GPa.

The modulus of elasticity (how easily the material deforms) for the two: sapphire - 250 GPa, and mineral glass - 82.5 GPa.

What does all this mean? It means, for the same diameter and thickness of watch crystal, it takes about 35 times more force to fail a piece of glass than a piece of sapphire, but sapphire will deform about three time more than glass before failing.

Plastics have a yield stength of around 67 GPa, and a modulus of elasticity of 2585 GPa, which means they are about as strong as glass but able to deform about ten times more than glass before failing.

Also, sapphire and mineral glass is tested by dropping a 2.25 ounce steel ball-bearing on a representative crystal from varying heights until the crystal breaks and the total amount of energy needed to break the glass can be calculated. According to ISO 14368, Part 3, mineral glass must absorb 1600 to 2100x10^-4 Newton-Meters, sapphire is only required to 800 to 1800x10^-4 NM.

>Comparing the acrylic crystal and the sapphire crystal presents many pros and only a few cons. Both offer protection for the delicate dial and movement of each watch, though the sapphire crystal is considered harder. This is not always a good thing, however, as the acrylic, if broken, will not shatter, while the sapphire crystal will, potentially causing major damage to the interior of the watch. It is a give and take when deciding between the two. However, Rolex, now solely sporting sapphire crystal, has clearly made their choice.

I’m thinking of making watches in China and maybe doing a kickstarter because I don’t like where modern watchmakers are going with more and more minimalism and thick construction.

I want to do classic watches inspired by vintage pieces pic related. Im thinking of starting with a chronograph watch in 50s style based off of a universal geneve or lemania, but with a quartz movement to keep the price around 275.

Manual and automatic movements are 2-300 more expensive, especially with complications, and I’m not sure if there’s as much demand for that compared to quartz movements.

Would you guys like to see classic watches based off of vintage pieces around this price and with a quartz movement?

Pls give feedback on whether you’d be interested in buying or what kind of vintage watch styles you’d like to buy

OP business poster here. Good to find this project. I was kind of afraid that there would be some guys coming in and just choosing a standard case and dials and marketing as vintage inspired. Their kelly design is the only one that even approaches true vintage design features but its still very modern and minimalist with the standard hands and numerals. Their target audience with ~199 USD price certainly wouldn’t really care about those details. I think still think their “custom” watches are very very generic and hardly approach the unique designs of the eras of watch design they claim to be inspired from. It’s more like they just copied the color schemes and changed around the colors on the dial.

Looking for a dress watch but having trouble finding what I'm looking for. Watch must have a nice silver sunburst dial, bar indices (minimal use of numerals is ok), be hand wound, have no date window and no sub-dials (power reserve is ok as long as it's not too obtrusive).
