Meanwhile your watch, uses an antiquated wound spring and regulator to turn a series of gears

That break down so often to the point where thickened lubricating oils from metal dust shavings need to be cleaned off or face permanent damage and warranty voiding

Only advancement in the last 200 years, is a chunk of metal attached to a ratchet so you don't have to wind it manually.

Your "priceless" dial is plastic, and people fetishize now extinct glass enamel on brass dials that Haven't been in production for 100 years.

Brands that you buy from use adhesive to affix said "priceless dials" rathen than dial feet.

Even high end brands are using plastic dial feet.

Which model anon?

>> No.13551458

A couple of threads back someone asked for an overview of the differences between the Seiko 52xx and 56xx calibres. To start with, this article posted to WUS provides a good overview: https://forums.watchuseek.com/f366/history-classic-automatic-king-seiko-comparison-5626-7113-5256-8010-a-1034554.html

What I will add to the above is mainly context. In the pre-quartz era the two main Seiko watch-making factories operated semi-independently as competitiors and so Suwa Seikosha (tsunami symbol on the dial) and Daini Seikosha (lighting bolt on the dial) each independently developed movements and manufactured watches, though both sides shared marketing and sales distribution channels. The 56xx is a ground up Suwa design and shares very little in common with the Daini designed 52xx.

One thing to generally keep in mind about pre-quartz Seiko movements is that the Daini designed movements tend to be much more fundamentally sound designs that are more reliable over long stretches of time (i.e. decades). Today far fewer Daini movements have known "Achilles heel's" than vintage Suwa designs. Comparing the Daini 52xx to the Suwa 56xx maitnains this pattern, as the Suwa 56xx is known to have a very high risk of having a plastic rocker in the day/date quickset mechanism shrink and crack over time, causing the quick-set to eventually fail. Fortunately, replacements are now starting to be made in Australia, but none-the-less the issue is a hassle.

So basically, I think the best way to understand these movements is that the Suwa 56xx was designed to be a mid-range movement family, with most 56xx based movements used in low-beat 3hz form in Lord Matic models with minimal levels of adjustment, whereas by contrast the Daini designed 52xx was desgined from the ground up to be a high-end production movement that was made in 4hz versions only and which was adjusted to a higher standard even in mid-range use in LM Special models.

>> No.13551459

>>13551458
In a way, you can almost think of them as Seiko's version of a 2824 and 2892, where the Suwa 56xx is the 2824 and the 52xx is the 2982 in the analogy. The 52xx was simply designed from the drawing board on to be a more high-end design.

Another important consideration is how Daini and Suwa treated their respective King Seiko models. Suwa had developed the Grand Seiko line as their top line, while King Seiko was originally Daini's top line and was meant as an equivalent tier competitor to Grand Seiko. Market success led to the decision that Grand Seiko would become the top brand line and King Seiko would become the second highest brand line at Seiko in this period, but Daini themselves never really accepted the notion of King Seiko's playing second fiddle to Grand Seikos, and so Daini never actually followed the corporate guidelines that said King Seiko models were to be adjusted to a less accurate standard than Grand Seiko models. The practical upshot of this stubbornness is that Daini produced King Seikos tend to have had more adjustment work done on them, and more care and attention in general lavished on them than Suwa produced King Seikos.

It may also interest you to know that after the quartz-revolution, in the 1990s, when Seiko wanted to start making upper mid-range and up mechanical watches again, the 4hz automatic movement they dusted off from the archives and put back into production was the 52xx, reborn as the 4Sxx. Within a few years, Seiko had decided the 4Sxx was too high end for mid-range Seiko products and moved the design to being a Credor exclusive, which should be a testament to what they thought of the fundamentals of the design.

Hey I'm that anon, thanks a lot for the write up. Also does the last 4 numbers after the movement number (ex: 56xx-7000) mean anything apart from day/date complications?

>> No.13551627

>>13551620
The way that Seiko model codes work is that the first two numbers (or in the post-quartz era, number and letter) denote the movement family, the second two numbers denote the grade and whether it is time only, date only, or day date, and the last four numbers denote the case style (and note the last four numbers on the case-back denote the case style, the last four numbers of the dial denote the dial code, which can be different from the case code).

The last digit in the first four works like this: 0 or 1 - No date, 5 - Date only, 6 - Day-date.

So, a King Seiko 5256-8010 has a 52xx movement, King Seiko grade (the LM Specials are all 520x or 521x), day-date, with an 8010 case style.

By contrast, a Lord Matic 5601-9000 has a 56xx movement, Lord Matic grade, no date, and a 9000 case style.

Hope that helps.

It does help quite a bit, I actually got a Seikomatic-P cause of your posts (unless it was canadian anon, or are you canadian anon?) And now am looking at a "Higher end" movement. One thing i am somewhat worried about is the servicing costs and parts availability, I suppose that means I will look at a 52xx movement, or even a 5740 LM if i can't find a watch I like.

Would you have any resources to look up older Seiko case styles, I saw one recently, I think it was described as a pillowcase style, really short square lugs that looked quite nice.

>> No.13551648

>>13551641
I am the Canadian anon who had a Seikomatic-P 5106, though I since sold that watch to another regular in these threads.

Servicing costs on a 52xx or a Suwa produced 5740C powered Lord Marvel 36000 shouldn't be too bad as both movement families tend to be fairly reliable and, worst case, parts donors are plentiful and cheap.

Just make sure you have a decent independent watchmaker to service them.

As for case styles, I've generally just Google "seiko" and the movement number in quotes and gone through the image results to look for case styles. Other shot would be the vintage catalogue scans available on the Seikoholics forum.

I wasn't wearing it much as my other vintage Seikos, and he was interested in it for the push button quickset feature. Plus he ended up wanting to sell his King Seiko 45-7001 as the long lug to lug on that watch meant it was a bit big for his wrist, and knowing the cosmetic and mechanical condition it was in I jumped at the chance to buy it. Pic related.

Independent watchmakers working out of their apartments seems to be a motif.
