18mm and extends out to what, 20mm or 22mm once it clears the case? NATOs might look a little goofy/thin. You could potentially trim a 20mm/22mm leather or a two piece ballistic nylon to 18mm at the lugs and have it extend out once it clears the case, but honestly that bracelet looks decent enough and might be your best bet. Same problem with this old SNE124 from Seiko. I though about trimming a leather to fit between the lugs and extend out, but decided to just stick with the stock albeit pretty shit bracelet.

he's a bit fast but you can see it here at 8:50.

I think its pretty shocking that its a more accurate action than a watch that costs 10x its price from a high end brand. You can tell a real $10k rolex from a modern $500 by small details and mostly internal actions (the feel of the crown and so on). I wouldn't buy a luxury watch that couldn't even get a date change in line

>> No.13520856

You're quite right, should this be entirely the case. I don't know enough about movements to say if it's as other poster says.

This said, would I wear a Rolex Sub that clicked over to the next day three minutes before midnight, over a Hamilton that clicked over exactly at midnight? You bet your gaping shitter I would. Rolex isn't the be all and end all of finishing and QC, you can even find examples quite commonly of the rehaut being quite obviously misaligned, but they are massively advantageous in other areas.

To be honest I think flaws of this magnitude are what gives watches their "soul". It's the kind of feeling that makes you happy when you own a classic car and it starts after ten seconds of cranking in -5C weather. Humans have that retarded fault that makes them assign emotion to imperfection, perhaps it's why I can look at a $100,000 Patek and not desire it what so ever.

after repairing the winding mechanism and another round of finishing with needle files and scotch tape, it runs under its own power in all orientations until the mainspring winds down, with no skips or jams. on a full wind (two careful hands required) it runs for about 45 seconds before coming to a full stop.

although it runs, the fit isn't perfect. the impulse teeth on the pallet only make good contact with one of the escape wheels, and at high amplitude the pin on the balance wheel can hit the tourbillon track and bounce back.

overall i'm really happy with how this turned out - never tried to build any kind of clockwork before, so i would have taken any intermittent ticking for a victory. i intend to build more, so hopefully there will be many cool webms to come.

on a side note, i hope y'all stop bitching about /fa/ vs. /g/ now.

Based on my hands-on experiences, I'd rate the citizen case as better than the Seiko, although the dial and hands on the Seiko are indisputably better. The Citizen is also ecodrive, which could be a plus or minus, depending on what you think. I'd also have to add the Piaget 700P and Credor minute repeater as contenders for best quartz watch, though neither are high accuracy, as they have an interesting escapement and superb finishing, and obviously the minute repeater is a minute repeater. There's also high-jewelry quartz watches but they are probably not what you're thinking of.

I'd assumed he meant stepper motor quartz, but if you are counting any quartz regulated watch then those are probably the absolute top of the pops.

Interesting that you rate the Chronomaster cases as better than the quartz GS. Are you comparing to the 37mm old style GS quartz models or the newer SBGV 40mm designs with the modern five finish bracelets, such as pic related?

The ones I had seen were the SBGX older ones. I might try to get to the boutique in a few weeks when I get a day with some time and check out these new things. The chronomasters I looked at had a similar rounded case shape to the older GS quartz, as opposed to these new ones which appear to have more sharp angles., which would be nice.

i printed all parts in 3 sessions, but the settings i used were specifically to compensate for some weaknesses in my printer, so adjust accordingly: ultimaker 2+, 0.4mm nozzle, verbatim white pla, 200c nozzle temp, 60c bed temp, 0.2mm first layer height, 0.05mm layer height (0.1 is much more reasonable but my printer does much smoother surfaces at 0.05), 25% infill (100% infill for balance wheel), 8mm brim, 0.8mm/2 layer wall thickness, 0.8mm top/bottom thickness.

after printing, i used a set of needle files (pic related, all my tools) to remove the brim and smooth the escape wheels and pallet fork. be careful not to remove too much material here or else the escape wheels and pallet fork won't mesh properly - fractions of a millimeter count. in one case where i over-filed the locking tooth on the pallet, i put a single strip of scotch tape on the tooth and it went from skipping every 3-4 teeth to no skips at all.

the other gears were left unfinished. the pallet fork in particular requires a lot of filing to achieve smooth operation with the balance wheel. i used a 2mm drill bit to deburr and ream the holes for the shafts; any which were too tight i reamed again with a 2mm allen key. the shafts were made from 2mm stainless steel rods for rc car axles, cut to length with a handheld bolt cutter.

some shafts which were too loose or off-center were also fixed with careful application of scotch tape. i'm sure there's a better choice than scotch tape, but this is working out alright so far.

assembly was mainly guesswork and intuition, but with relatively few parts i was pretty easily able to figure it out from the pics on thingiverse. if you do try this, you can post any questions here and i can give you more specific tips.

A lot people talk about the the pallet fork design of the Oysterquartz (which is indeed great). This design is also shared by the Omega megaquartz 32KHz and 2.4MHz. However, it did not appear first in Rolex nor in Omega - it appeared first in a Roamer watch, now very rare. Much like in the other designs, a stepper motor would advance a pallet fork, which would in turn advance the gear train. Very good for achieving very exact and non-slack motion of the geartrain.

So, I'm trying to wrap my head around watch magnetic resistance. How much does a quartz watch resist these fields compared to an automatic?

In Canuckistan it appears to be worth around $7k CAD with box and papers and I'm friends with a Rolex AD so I'd get a discount on the 214270. It's within a few hundred dollars of a 1:1.

>> No.13521028

>>13521026
An automatic watch has a very fine spring that is a major factor in the timekeeping. If that gets magnetized, the spring typically will "tense up" because the coils are all mutually attracted towards one another, and the watch will start running very fast.

In a quartz watch it's just a bunch of circuits, and the quartz crystal itself isn't bothered.
Analog quartzes can still be affected by magnetism (more specifically their metal gears), but it won't be as severe as in mechanicals.

Question to owners of automatic watches: how much "movement" daily automatic watch requires to wind? Any tricks to wind it when it's not in use?
I bought Seiko 5 automatic and it might be major fuck up on my part, I work from home quite often and during this time watch mostly sits unused. I don't want to have to constantly set time/date on it when it inevitably dies.
I didn't realize that those things can only go for like 30 something hours without use.

>> No.13521050

>>13521026
The most magnetically sensitive part of a quartz watch is the stepper motor. In a sufficiently strong magnetic field, the watch circuitry won't be able to activate the stepper motor, so the hands will stop advancing, even though the crystal is still oscillator and keeping time. A sufficiently strong magnetic field can also upset the properties or the oscillator ciecuit and so cause timekeeping to be off. These effects would generally stop when the field is removed.
