First for vintage chronometers.

Adjusted the micro-regulator a bit faster as the watch was loosing a tiny bit of time on the wrist and dial up, even though it was showing damn near +0 SPD in every position on the timegrapher.

Anyone who owns any watch winder should be brutally murdered.

It's not even good for the watch, keeping it running like it's a daily beater, when you're not wearing it at all.

Also honestly how many watches in a $10000 winder will not have a date quickset or handwinding? It's fucking madness.

Is it acceptable to go shopping wearing only your watch, a pair of boxers and a shirt?

I've done this a few times recently, and although my watch is relatively expensive and there's absolutely no way a 17 year old could afford it I keep getting asked for ID.

I think I might buy a watch with lume, looks cool and I haven't used a watch with lume since I was a child, except one shitter I used for a little while that had a little lume. Maybe when I stopped wearing it I was a teenager, don't remember when it was exactly. Don't know where I have that watch, or if I even have it anymore. Casio ana-digi diver, have never seen it online, don't know what the model was called. I was fucking stupid, scraped it against a wall on purpose. I remember the bezel was very slippery and almost impossible to turn at the end, I think it got scratched up also after what I did. I think the buttons were hard to press also. Super small diver, don't know the diameter.

What do you guys think of three-hands watches that are more than 39mm in diameter? When I see watches that are 40mm and more, and they don't have more complications, like chrono or other, then I think they kinda look a bit odd, as if the dial is too big for the watch, like there is a lot of empty space in that dial. The exception usually is with divers, but they tend to have very big bulky indices and details for legibility and have that hefty look to them, that it makes up for it.

I think my watch switches date from 11 pm to midnight. Weird because when I was turning the crown when setting the date it appeared it wasn't finished until half past midnight or something. Anyway, what's the standard? What does your watch do?

And another thing. In the manual it said you do the following when you set the date on this watch:
>set the date for the day before the current day
>turn the crown to advance the hands until the date switches over to the current day
>keep turning to present time
Is this how it's usually done?
And in the future when I have to make adjustments for 30/31 days of a month plus leap year, do I have to do this shit again, or is it only one time?

It also said in the manual, and I asked about this before, that to set the time you advance the minute hand a few minutes ahead of the exact time, and then turn it back to the exact time. How many of you do this? Do all analog watches need this procedure?

Some of my watches have instant date change, usually between 11:40 and 12:05, depending on how the hands are set. Some of the others have gradual changes; the earliest starts a little before 9PM and the latest lasts until a bit after 3AM.

When I need to set the date on a watch that is running and hasn't run down, if the watch has a quickset, I just wait until it's not a time when the date is engaged and use the quickset. Otherwise, I will typically advance the hands to advance the date, although if it is early enough in the morning, I may wind the hands backwards and then forwards. On a watch that has stopped, I will set the time by advancing the hands past midnight, so I know whether it's AM or PM, then,
> If the watch has a quickset, move the hands to where the date is not engaged, quickset the date, and then set the time, or
> If the watch does not have a quickset, move the hands back and then forward again to set the date, and then set the time.
I do set the time by advancing the hands fifteen minutes past the current time and then moving them back, unless it's past 11:30 PM, in which case I won't, since that might cause the date to advance.

How common were wristwatches before the introduction of quartz watches? And have mechanical watches become cheaper or more expensive since then? I'm guessing the use of wristwatches reached a peak just before cellphones were invented? Anyone here know from personal memory, either from before the introduction of quartz or before the introduction of cellphones. When I was growing up (born 92) pretty much everyone wore wristwatches. In fact the majority still wear watches today from what I see.
But to answer your question about pre-quartz, wristwatches was something everyone owned. Didn't matter if you were poor or rich, everyone just wore watches. Contrary to today back then it wasn't just for admiration of watches or fashion, it was something that was seen as necessary, or else you'd be that person who asked other people about what time it was.

It's not that they give you high quality watches or anything, but you get very cheap swiss made watches if nothing else. Mechanical watches were cheap and they were expensive. It was like today, you have shitters and you have expensive ones. But the cheapest decent mechanicals today like Seiko 5 cost like 10 times the cheapest decent quartz watches, like f-91w. I don't think unemployed for example would want to buy even a Seiko 5 in a lot of cases.

Hmm, I don't have all the answers but consider that the prices have changed and also the build quality even for seiko 5 and similar watches. Also, you need to think of it a bit different. Remember that watch was a tool that you kinda needed. Do unemployed today have cellphones? Well, even unemployed have to have them right? It's weird not having a phone. Back then, it would be kinda weird not having a watch. You would pay for a watch back then, and even cheap watches were babyed by the owners probably, like it was an important thing he would want to keep for life or at least for a very long time.

Isn't it fucking retarded to buy a mechanical watch that doesn't hack and hand wind? But then again, you're never going to be using the second hand for knowing the exact time on a mechanical, but rather to time seconds or for telling that the watch is running, because it's going to be off by a minute most times you look at your watch. Would probably take some getting used to, the idea that the second hand is mostly a distraction. Hand winding though seems stupid to not have?

I watched a video about watch production, it was a commercial for Patek Philippe I think. When I watched it it struck me that it's kind of ironic that people who prefer mechanical watches over quartz watches often have this argument that it's handcrafted, as opposed to manufactured in an automated process with robots and computers. That might have been the case in the 19th century, but mechanical watches today seem to have just about as much robots and computers in the manufacturing process as quartz watches, only difference really being the amount that's produced...

The overwhelming majority of the labor is in the manual finishing of the movement components and the case/dial/hands/etc. Finishing watches internally and externally to haute standards requires enormous amounts of skilled manual labour, plus labour spent on QC'ing every component cosmetically and mechanically.

You'll probably have to be able to finish a 300-page novel in a day if you're going to manage university is my guess, and I've never done that, usually a novel takes at least a week for me, not reading 8 hours a day but still, even back in fucking 7th grade or something some classmates finished a novel in a weekend. I don't think I'm very smart, although in high school I scored 100% on pretty much all math tests and three maths teachers said I had aptitude for it, and others were impressed or jealous, one teacher said I could go to the economics school. The program I was at in high school was for social science though, but I took an additional math course. I think maybe the science program had yet one more course or maybe two, one of which I took at the preparatory course at university, didn't seem hard but then again not very much of the stuff we had seemed hard, it got hard because it was so fucking much in the allotted time, actually somewhat higher intensity than people who study the same subjects in high school I think. Also, later when I took an aptitude test I guess similar to SAT I scored really fucking bad on the whole test including the math part, I've taken that test maybe 3 times and scored bad every time, but not as bad as the last time.

Casio MTPS100L-7B1
Of course the strap will be dog shit but that's really no biggie when a $30 strap from a speciality store will shit over any oem strap in sub 1k watch category

save up for a quality strap. avoid fake, bonded, synthetic leather. get nothing but top grain if you want a leather strap. metal bracelet is an option for formal/sport wear. nato/canvas for sport/casual.
you get what you pay for.
