My other vintage Seikos (the LM Special with the blue dial and the 52 KS Special) are 52xx models with 28,800 beat rates, this is my first 45xx model.

The 45xx are only expensive to service if any parts get worn out because there are no cheap parts donors available since the 45xx was never used in any cheaper model ranges.

Besides, compared to keeping a vintage chronograph serviced, it still isn't that expensive. I could pay for a 45 KS donor outright with the extra money I'd spend on two services for my L5100 Speedmaster.

Well the case design of the 52 KS Special is fairly similar to that of the 45 KS, and it also says hi beat on the dial because 4hz was considered a high beat rate in period.

As for why they can be expensive to maintain, it's a combination of the 45xx being a little more prone to wearing out parts than other vintage Daini calibers, and the lack of spare parts availability means having to buy donors if you need parts and there were no cheap versions of the 45xx.

By contrast, if you need a non-escapement part for a 52xx you can buy an LM Special parts donor for under $50.

Looks like a hell of a watch for $300, I somewhat appreciate the fact that they hid the potential shit finishing that a cheap watch will have on the hands and indices by simply not having indices and making the hands a matte finish.

The catches appear to be that 52mm lug to lug is 2mm too big for me and you can't actually buy it anymore. Either way I give your watch a 8.5/10, it really looks the part on that bracelet.

Also a nice sapphire dome. It's great bang-for-buck. I appreciate the mostly sterile design too. I got one from their initial batch. They then came out with an all black PVD version. They just recently sold out of the third run which was a slightly improved "X1" revision. I wouldn't be surprised if they run a couple more batches, but it sounds like it doesn't really suit what you're looking for anyway.

I slept on Maratac for a while, but they have come out with quite a few cool designs and always at a very reasonable price considering the features.

In terms of Alpha, view them how you best see them. The movement (Venus 175) is reliable IF it's in good service, and that's the ultimate problem with any brand that uses them. The problem always occurs in the casing of the movement, not the movement itself.

If you had a shitty replica that had the Seagull movement in it, as long as the movement was serviced correctly (i.e. oiled in all the right places, adjusted to the right tolerances, etc.) then the watch would be fine. My Seagull has performed spectatularly well, despite all the stupid comments that always come up about the damn thing stopping if I clap or applaud. If your movement is in good order, the watch is fucking superb, and mine si still running at 0.5+ per day. I use it more than my Seamaster now, which is a surprise to me as well...but that's life.

>>13517152
You know that that claim is bullshit right? The greatest problem with watches and their water resistence, if the gaskets are good, is how much actual pressure and force is applied to the openings. Keeping a watch suspended in water is nothing. The reason that 100m watches fail so spectacularly is because of the movements of hands in water, and the resultant pressulres on the gaskets and shit. That's one of the reaons why watches rated for 100m are fucking useless....they're fine if you suspend them at 100m depth, but if you start to move around, then things fail.

That's why I hate the damn rating anyway...but that's noather gripe for another night.

There's nothing wrong iwht the movmeent as long as it's serviced and clean....if it's not, all bets are off. Yes.

I'm not autistic enough to spot my Seamasters as I can other watches, but is it a Brosnan-period one? I'm in the market for one (2531.80.00) and wondering how it functions day to day? i.e., do you feel like you're losing anything over a "modern" watch in terms of the accuracy of the movement, water resistance or the quality of the strap?

Do you feel like you could have bought one yesterday and still been happy with it as it is for the price you paid?

My questions are of course on the assumption that it's a 15+ year old watch, I may be wrong in this assumption, as I said I don't know my Seamasters inside and out.

Either way, it looks fantastic.

Oh shit, this it eht aactual first time anyone has actually asked me about it. Normally people just want to know, 'where do I get a 1963'. Oka, here we go. Wall of text coming up, and if you know me, then you know it's normal.

It is a Brosnan period, and you can tell by the hour indices (the more modern ones are surrounded by silver colour, maybe white gold, I don't fucking know). How do thye function day to day? Fucking perfect watch. They dress up (with a suit) and down (khackis and golf shirt), they are automatic wind, and the date is large enough even for my eyes to see. Mine holds within COSC specs, and did before the servicing as well. In terms of accuracy, mine gains time if left face up, and loses when the crown is up, so I can adjust it and leave it overnight depending on the gains/losses during the day, thus keeping it at 0.0. In terms of water resistence, as I said, I get it checked once a year because I'm one of the few people who actually dives with this fucking thing (It's a secondary/backup to my Suunto), so water resistance isn't a problem. But there is always a little concern about washing hands with it...probably a habit that I can't shake (I can't wash hands with my Seagull or any other watch I own). Quality of strap is where I need to go into more detail.

The strap in the pic you saw is a Hersch Leonardo Sharkskin in blue. They don't make them anymore. I always dive with it on the bracelet, and surprisingly the diving extension ACTUALLY WORKS. Props to Omega for making something practical for a change. But I wouldn't get the Sharkskin near water...there's no need, and I know what water does to treated skins....

I was lucky with mine; a colleague needed to get rid of it quickly, thus the price was very good and he wanted it go to someone who would care for it. I'm very happy with it, and I'll wear it until I die.

cont.

The age of the watch is irrelevant: it just got through a major overhaul/servicing, so really anything that was noticable in terms of the age of the watch was either replaced or repaired (though Omega normally just replaces shit...they don't really repair anything as far as I know.). The bag of replaced parts was full to the brim, lots of movement gears, lots of crowns, etc.

Here's my 2 cents (written to the value of 2 shillings):

1) The design has become classic, not iconic, but classic. Not only with the Bond connection, but because it was the first diver that didn't look pure utilitarian AND wasn't a Rolex and yet still captivated enough people to be something that is sought after.

2) The movement is utterly reliable. Yes, it's an ETA, and people will bitch about that, but there's really nothing wrong with it, and it's taken everything I could throw at it.

3) The design is still superb, and not easy to date. It doesn't necessarily look '1990's' ish the way that some watches tend to look their decade (the 1970's watches in particular by Omega are VERY 1970's.).

The one thing that is a problem when you're buying vintage with this model is the second hand: the red tip tends to go orange, and then fade to white with lots of sunlight. You have to accept that, and if you see a pure red one, then either it's been replaced or it's been a safe-queen. Even mine has started to fade a bit, but I took care of it, to a point. I still wear the hell out of it, but I don't treat it like shit.

I can't say that there is anything seriously wrong with this model, and I can honestly say I'd never get rid of it. It was my first 'expensive' mechanical, and it'll always be with me. I've never fallen out of love with it, nor have I ever thought I'd rather have gotten a different model or iteration (the GMT is okay, but I hate the look to be honest). It's MY watch...and it suits me.

My best advice: try one on.

Glad to hear it. I've actually not seen one of these in person yet even though I badly want one, but I'm holding off my lust while I gather enough information on them to make an informed purchase. So often you hear of people buying "old" watches and being disappointed by a certain aspect, e.g. a five digit sub and the included bracelet. It's good to hear that you feel it functions as a $2500-ish watch should function in 2018.

Definitely agree on the aesthetic aspects, I really can't pick out anything that ages it in my opinion.

I assume yours is Tritium and has faded by now? Kind of a bummer for me as I love lume, but not the end of the world.

No, tritium was not used on my model at all, and as far as I know, it wasn't used since the superluminova conversion in the 90s. Even the quartz versions didn't use tritium.

So, mine still glows bright, and it's bright enough to read from across the room in darkness (like, if you go to sleep but instead of putting it on the nightstand you put it on the desk across the room).

One thing that is different between the modern Seamaster (which uses the co-axial) and the old one (like mine) is that the lume colour is blue on the modern one, not green like the old one. I hate it. But I hate so many things about the new seamasters that I might as well not bother to say anything.

The only caveat I could think of with the old Seamaster like mine is that it uses the ETA movement. A lot of people want the new Co-axial. The ETA is generic, not in-house, etc...so for some people it's a step down. For me, I dont' give a shit, beause the thing keeps time as accurately as I want. But tha'ts just me.

One more thing: consider seriously the 2264 variation, the black on black version with the sword hands. It's regarded as the most legible version of the seamaster ever created, and if you can get it with the normal Seamaster bracelet (which is considered the most comfortable bracelet Omega has created in their modern lineup) then you're really set.

I know it's different to what you're going after, espcially if you've had your heart set on the blue Brosnan classic, but it's a variaint that is rare, sought after, and excellent in execution. Same movement (ETA), but who the fuck cares when the watch looks this good.

I don't know the precise words for it but yes, the watch strap does stretch (pic related).
It was the watch of my great grandfather. He got it in the 60's as a gift thanks to some deals he made (he was a businessman). We found it in a drawer a few years ago so my parents had it repaired and gave it to me as a birthday gift (I was 16 back then).
I think I'm going to buy a new strap for it. I like the current one but unfortunately it is scratched (you can see it on the pic).

I guess you're right. That's the thing though, I looked at the definitions in the past and tried to make out the difference and dictionary.com lists "traditional" as entry no. 9 for "classic". Entry no. 1 is
>of the first or highest quality, class, or rank
However there might be a connection, because the following is said about "classical" in the context of music:
>of, relating to, or constituting the formally and artistically MORE SOPHISTICATED and ENDURING types of music, as distinguished from popular and folk music and jazz. Classical music includes symphonies, operas, sonatas, song cycles, and lieder.
Also, I said "classy" but whoever replied began using "classic" and "classical".
Anyway it might not be very important.

Are you kidding? I'm entirely sure that the top 10 biggest watch enthusiasts in this thread own seikos. Because seiko is nothing to be frowned upon. Yes they produce watches for the "average joe", but they do it in such a good way that deserves respect. And it is respected, by watchmakers and enthusiasts all over this world. You have no reason to feel bad about seiko. I think I understand what bothers you though, you want something more, a luxury watch. We all do, and some of us have and some don't. Save up if you care so much about getting one. Meanwhile, owning a seiko is NOT a bad thing. It's a good thing. Maybe not all the normies understand it, but any watch enthusiast will get it, that you chose seiko over all those fashion brands, because you are in the know, that if you buy affordable watches, then you go to the god damn boss of affordables - seiko.

I am a native English and a teacher. The rough definitions I gave you above are in the context of this thread about watches. Entry no. 1 is rare, classic is almost never used in that way.
For the purposes of speaking about watches classic and classical refer to long-standing traditions in horology, such as the Breguet numerals. Classy refers to dress watches, watches that look nice with a suit or for upscale events.

The thing is I have about $21,000 in my savings account, not much for a 34 year old I know, but just saying I can afford a watch more expensive than $200, just not sure it's a good idea. I can also probably afford a better car but it's my first car, I wanted a shit car, and had less money when I bought it a year and a half ago, and I'm thinking I'll use that car until it begins to have a lot of problems. Also, why do you want to know which country I'm from? Just kidding about Congo, I'm from Sweden.

Someone in the other thread said that this thing has a shitty movement. Are there any known problems with it, other than it being Chinese? I'm a student so I don't have a ton of money to blow on a dress watch and most competitors this small are over $500

If you're from Sweden then you will make $150 every single day, or perhaps more. I don't understand how buying a 500 dollar watch would be a problem. You don't need to be THAT strict with your budget, at least if a watch is something you really want then I think it's justifiable. I mean, it's a shame to be limited to the very bottom range of watches. Also, consider this, a 34 year old should not wear a "shitter" he should wear a "grown up watch". If you ask me, you should allow yourself to spend 500.

Pretty sure a timex watch is one that you would just toss when it's broke. Aren't they sub $100?

A bit of a sweeping statement there. I think I make less than that, I pump fuel for buses for a living. I make about $2000/month or maybe a little more, after tax.

Lol, I wore that Pulsar shitter on my last instadate. When I was drinking wine with a woman in a bar she seemed to be trying to get a look of what watch it was, she seemed like the type of woman that only cares about money. I tried my best to never have the dial pointed directly at her face for extended periods of time lmao. On the date previous to that with another woman like two or three weeks ago I was still using my f-91w, hadn't cleaned it yet also so it had some white stuff. She didn't seem to care about it but I don't know if she did. She wore a Cartier herself with no second hand, don't know if it was fake, that's hella expensive isn't it?
