This thread is about the appreciation of all watches big and small, cheap or expensive, as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that are required to make a functioning watch, clock, or other timepiece.

Watches are consumerism and NOT a hobby.

I'm in NYC. email me at nycddancer at gmail if you want to send your watch to a total stranger on the internet until they get around to doing a testing run and then hope they send it back to you.

There are three main ways to measure accuracy

> On the wrist
Watches are being worn on the wrist when they are doing their job. When wearing your watch, you simply note how the time it's showing compares to atomic time (say, from http://time.is), and then a few days later, how far it's drifted. This gives the best idea of how the watch actually performs in daily use. However, it is not necessarily repeatable - if your wear pattern (hours worn per day, activity while worn) varies, so will the rate. It also takes a long time to get an accurate idea of the accuracy. There are also apps to help with this - I use WatchCheck for Android. This method also is generally not good at measuring isochronism of automatic watches, since they will generally stay wound all day.

> In static positions
Measuring watch rates in static positions is how watches have compared and certified for decades. This is an objective measure of a watch's accuracy - it doesn't depend on the activity of the wearer. It can also reveal flaws in a watch - perhaps there is a mechanical issue that causes it to run poorly when the crown is up, but fine in other positions, for example. Generally this also requires a watch to maintain consistent rates in various positions (and temperatures) from full wind to 24 hours. This takes a long time to test, since you must let enough time elapse (generally at least 24 hours) in each position you want to test. COSC tests for ISO3159 "Chronometer" standards using this method. This is what I'm doing with my lab incubator.

>>13508968
> On a timegrapher
A timegrapher is a machine that listens to the ticking noise of a watch and measures its rate (among other things). Timegraphers are extremely convenient since they can measure the rate of a watch in just a few seconds. Unlike the first method, measuring using a timegrapher measures an instantaneous rate, not a rate over a period. This means they can be used to separately assess the watch's rate and full wind as well as its rate after 24 hours, which can be a useful thing to know. However, in order to assess how a watch would perform over a period, a timegrapher measurement would have to be taken over a longer period anyways. Timegraphers are extremely useful for making measurements of a watch quickly and a useful diagnostic tool in general.

>>13508955
Works for me, if you're really interested; I'll be around. I could also just throw it on a timegrapher for you to start, but if you still wanted me to, would keep it until I did my next round of full ISO3159 testing and include it. Email me if you're interested.

My best-performing traditional mechanical watch in this test >>13508915 is hard to say. The Aevig Huldra (a miyota 9xxx) performed very well aside from its average rate (which is just a question of regulation, not how well the watch is adjusted, so not a major concern to me). The Seiko 45KS also did very well, as did the two modern swiss watches (the baume & mercier classima and the bruno sohnle rondomat, though the b&m had the clear lead). I was also very impressed with the performance of the cosmotrons, which are electric watches that use a hairspring and balance. The cosmic also perfomed very well for a traditional mechanical watch from the 60s - 1960s Omega was no joke.

The digital display usually also has a stopwatch, guess you could make it an analog chronograph instead but might be cheaper with digital, also I'm guessing it sometimes has a lap function like the f-91w, don't know if analog chronographs have that? And furthermore it has a perpetual calendar, or at least it automatically changes the days of the month all years except a leap year. So you have to change the date once every four years instead of once every second month. Perpetual calendar in an analog date complication is rare and I think expensive?

Rolex is using one-piece mainsprings and arbors in their newest 2236 movements. they don't make a winder to reuse this mainspring, meaning that the entire mainspring barrel is disposable and needs to replaced with every service

if you are not bothered by the industry trend toward disposable watch parts, this makes servicing easier, quicker, and allows for more consistent quality control

For me, you hit the nail on the head. I was so close to buying Alpina a few times but my heart went elsewhere. But watch collecting and wearing is all an effort of heart. If a watch speaks to you, it speaks to you. If you feel amazing wearing a watch, then the brand and price doesn't really matter. And Alpina seems large enough to provide decent customer service in case there are issues.

If you are going for a 1 watch type situation, I would wait a little and save more. If you find you still want the alpina in a couple weeks of searching and trying other models/brands on, then definitely try to seek it out to try in person if you haven't. Always try it on before you buy if you can and if you can't, Amazon should have a decent refund process.

One of the best 20th century bracelets. Ages ahead of Rolex then f.e.

And you can of course dislike the looks, but at least whoever decided to introducr those polished stripes was not thinking in cutting machine time.

The person who introduced the design probably wanted there to be at least twice separately made parts with more complex geometries. Then the production engineer jumped in and did what he is paid to do.

Videogame speedrunning makes me think of the mechanical vs quartz debate.

Some games have separate sections for with and without glitches, ya? it's like, the glitchless runs would have been the original runs and are mechanical in this analogy. as time went on, people found new techniques, glitches(quartz) which opened up new realms of what's possible. people still debate whether glitches or quartz spoil the spirit of the thing, or if the new possibilities should be celebrated

I think it's fine. It would look much better on a leather strap tho. Small watches always do.

Looks fine man, some watches are meant to wear small. The SNK80x series is one of those watches. Very casual.

Agree with >>13510945 too. Fell back in love with the 805 when I threw it on some leather. Makes it in the rotation at least once a week.

Yeah that's what I'm going to do. Can you link me some good (but not too expensive) dark brown leather straps for this? I was thinking in buying a 20 or 22 mm strap and then notch it a bit on the ends so it fits on the lungs and "hugs" them at the same time. What do you think?

Perhaps this is ok? 50 euro or so for good leather, it doesn't get much cheaper I think.

Why the fuck do they put up computer made pictures like this instead of photos? You can tell these aren't photos.
Also, thoughts on this watch?
