Pre-2003 DMs or Solovair?

I have a pair of size UK9/EU43 1490s, of course made in China so the quality hasn't really been up there.

I want a new pair of high black boots with a similar silhouette to 14-eyelet DMs, and I have two choices. Either a pair of Dr. Martens 1914s (14 eyelets, soft toe-cap) made in England in the 70s, or a brand new pair of Solovairs own 14i, steel-toe capped model. Both boots are of course made in Britain, the DMs have only seen light use (the tread is still almost perfectly intact and the leather has only few marks from light use around the toe cap and the calves) and the Solovairs are, well, new. Both boots have hi-shine-uppers and a standard, low-profile tread.

Which pair should I go with? The seller for the DMs provided me with inner and outer measurements of the sole, and apparently the old size UK10/EU45 is the same in lenght (inner and outer) as my pair of China-made UK9/EU43. The boots are lenghty enough, but a bit on the wide side (1cm or so), and I've thought about just adding some thick insole and boot socks to compensate for that extra space. With the Solovairs I'd need to compensate for the steel-toe cap but I already have the measurements made from another pair of steel-toed Solovairs I have in my cabinet.

The real question lies with the myth about vintage Docs lasting forever: do they? Some say the quality gradually gave away after they became sort of an alternative fashion-item in the 80s and 90s, and that only the earlier pairs are actually any good. If this is true, would going with a brand new pair be better? Does anyone happen to have any experience with actual vintage Docs vs. Solovair?

Stop the soloshit shilling.

I fell for the meme and bought soloshits after having owned mono docs for about 2 years. The leather, sole and overall construction is exactly the same. It's literally the same shoe, including the cheap, thin trash leather. The only difference is that Docs are stiffer initially because they coat the leather with a thicker plastic than soloshit. (it's literal plastic btw)

Also on the pair I got, they forgot to weld the fucking sole ends together. (pic related) There is simply no excuse for this. There's a guy on reddit who's sole split after 2 weeks of wear, among the many other stories.

TL;DR: Solovair is the exact same shoe as made in Asia docs, just worse quality control.

>don't use mink oil they basically turn black
There's no reason to use mink oil on anything except perhaps some specific types of leather.
Fucking shoe shops and shitty cobblers and online faggots recommending fucking mink (which 99% isn't even real mink oil, but a cheapo substitute).

All conditioning materials cause some darkening, that has to be taken into account when you choose a color.
Leather gets darker, not lighter, with use and maintenance.
It's the reason why I tend to the lighter leathers now because darks (not counting black, obviously) just become a muddy bland color in the end.

Conditioning, and, maybe, if you live in a region where it's needed, extra waterproofing. That shit's rough, though, and will defo darken your shit up.
Obenauf's, heavy duty.
Snoseal has silicon so I don't think it's good for long term use on stuff you want to keep "forever". I thought snoseal waterproofing was for shit used by professionals that change their footwear annually or whatever.

>>13512644
I've always liked IR's.
Amber's are decent standard model. Leather's neither here nor there. Not super stiff, but not super pliable.
However, it's the copper ruff tuff model that is where it's at.

8115? Anyway, the leather has more give, and so is mildly more forgiving during break-in (though not as easy as the muleskinner suede model).

Best thing about copper rough and tough is the insta-patina oil displacement shit as soon as you take one step. It's great. And, since they're lighter than the amber harness, there's a darkness buffer that you can take into account when adding any product to them.

I've seen too many pices of amber harness IR's turned into a bland, muddy dark on mfa or wherever.
It's fucking horrible and stupid.
There's no need to overdo conditioning and sealing.
Shit, the sealing isn't needed at all unless you live near the arctic circle or whatever and the usual products shilled on leddit and the like are absolute overkill for "fashion" boots.

>> No.13517602

>>13512467
>I always buy pairs that fit j u s t right or a bit too small even
Small as in width, not small as in length, surely.
Leather stretches outwards, as you say to match every curve etc. (well, some leathers do). But if you buy a shoe that's too short, then you're going to have a bad time.

It's especially bad when the shoes/boots you have have a hardened toebox, hardened 99.99% of the time with a thermoplastic. Your toes aren't going to budge that.

>>13512534
Keep in mind that, with decent shoemaking brands, numerical size means absolutely nothing by itself.
There's numerical size, yes, there's also width (american traditional shoemakers seemingly have a bazillion different widths from skinny to ultra fattt elephant pod) and there's the last, ie the shape the shoe is based on. Traditional makers will have multiple lasts amongst their models. Sneaker makers do too, but it's less important because of the forgiving nature of a sneaker's fit.

If you foot doesn't agree with the last shape then a favorable numerical size and width won't help. I know this all too well and have a pile of costly fucking shoes I can't fucking wear because I realized all too late that the lasts didn't work with my feet well.

That's the beauty of the sneaker: they're soft enough that they allow virtually any foot shape to slide in with basically instant comfort.
