I'll dig up one of my old run downs for you later, but the short version is:

Reliable and cheap(ish) to acquire and cheap(is) to get donors for if you need parts:
Lord Marvel 5740C
LM Special 5206/5216
King Seiko 5245/5246/5256

Not cheap to buy or maintain, but great:,
701x Chronographs
King Seiko 45xx

There are a lot of vintage Seikos outside of this that people collect but which are highly prone to movement issues and should be avoided unless you are prepared for the headaches such as the 613x chronographs and essentially all other mid range and up Suwa mechanical calibers besides the 5740C.

Okie doke. A few questions.

I'm really digging the Stowa Flieger watches, and I've seen some people on here post about them. It seems to have a good report with /wt/. Is this the consensus?

Secondly. Tudor vs Rolex. What is the real difference? Is there actually $4k difference in build quality or is it all paying in to heritage and status? I have a weird calling to own a Rolex but to justify 5k or more on a watch...well I just wish I knew more. I love watches and I respect them, I think they are one of the best accent pieces to any outfit.

well I can't speak for /wt/ but I'm the owner of the Stowa. I absolutely love it and I've hardly taken it off since I got it. The blued hands are stunning and personally I've not seen any other case back that compares to it in this price range. Though an ETA, its got some lovely decoration and the Stowa branding is very tasteful. The whole thing is very understated which is what I like, I'm not one to show off and I feel it suits me perfectly, with the real detail being appreciated up close. If you enjoy classic design and a legible dial its definitely a good option. Lastly, the lume on it has really impressed me. I've never had anything of the tier of omega/rolex, but the lume on this easily beats every seiko I've had/seen both in brightness and lasting glow. Its also hand applied and done so very well. Obviously as a now owner I am biased, but I can honestly say that in my experience its hard to find the same level of care and attention at this price range. Lastly, the company itself has been great. I had several questions and a simple request for strap sizing and swapping, which they responded to within hours every time. They have a good warranty policy and its hard to find anything negative said about them online.

Working on an old man's 1971 Seiko 5 7006. So far what it definitely needs is a new rotor, the weight has fallen off the rotor bearing. But I got a bunch of 7000-series laying around, I'll just lift one out. The 7006 rotor is sterile though, with no markings, I'll try to find another unmarked one.

Pic is before cleaning. That brown stuff on the winding wheel is probably old lubricant, I'll be checking it out whether that needs replacing too, but so far the movement is okay.

I think the 7006 is one of the first 7000-series movements, and as such has the most primitive day mechanism. No quickset, just an extra layer on the date driving wheel with a finger, an indexing spring, a retaining C-clip, and a single-language day wheel. Only the date is quicksetting.

>Tudor vs Rolex
tudor exists because rolex wanted to sell to people who were willing to pay a lot, but not enough for a rolex. they're manufactured in the same facilities as rolex, have about the same degree of finishing, typically have the same quality of materials/metals, and historically have shared a lot of the same designs/parts.

tudor just used cheaper ETA movements to cut costs and also not cannibalize pappa rolex's market share. they've become more autonomous lately, designing and manufacturing their own calibers and producing more watches that aren't just homages to the rolex version. modern tudor is more of their own brand now than ever before.

tl;dr yes tudor is still basically a babby rolex, but modern ones less so. they're excellent watches, a great entry into luxury watches, and are definitely worth considering. but if you want the brand name, you're better off saving and picking up a used OP or datejust.

t. faggot with a few rolex that appreciates tudors as well

Rolex vs Omega
>in terms of build quality and movement, which one takes the cake?

Rolex by far is superior in it's build quality and it's movement. Rolex is designed to be repairable forever. both their cases and their movements, anything that can go wrong, can be corrected. Rolex however, is very rigid in their design. so if you want something unique, or a certain complication (like a fucking day/date in something other than gold or plat ffs), that's where an Omega is more attractive. you can get cooler things with Omega, but they will not be as hardy as the Rolex, not by a mile.

to illustrate the point, a Rolex 40years old has higher QC standards post-service than anything from the same time period. a 15xx Rolex is still expected to be accurate to within -1/+10 sec/day with a maximum variation between positions (delta) of 25. that's rolex's own spec. Swatch group doesn't even give us a required spec on anything older than 20years or so. Omegas new stuff will probably be very comparable, they've stepped their game up, but the after sales service infrastructure of tools and parts that Rolex has in place means that a Rolex will ALWAYS be restorable

But bear in mind Rolex rips you off with their service prices too.

Also, the finishing and refinement of old Omegas is a lot above same age Rolexes. Not to mention bracelets. And this is true mostly up to de 2000s. Then Rolexes started to sharpen up, but their prices doubled too...

And now the newer co-axials look a lot more high tech than Rolex again... but the performance and durability is still to be proven...

I like both.

Omega has gone downhill and Rolex has stepped up their game a lot over the last several decades. Some Omegas today are pretty nice but they also put out a lot of shit and some of their technology like the early coaxial escapements is kind of questionable. Meanwhile today's Rolex might have some watches that are absolutely disgusting ugly shit only a billionaire sheikh could love, but you can't deny that every watch they make is built and finished to an extremely high standard and they're conservative with adopting tech but when they do it they do it well.

I should correct that I would put the MT5xxx and the 32xx on the same level.

but the 31xx is my favorite movement ever. the 32xx and the 2236 are moving toward disposable parts. in the 31 and earlier, Rolex service recommends replacing the mainspring every service. not really my style, but at least you *can* reuse it if you're not doing factory service. the 32 and 2236 Rolex asks to replace the entire mainspring barrel. they don't even make winders for the new barrels. the 32 also switches to a ballbearing unit for it's autoweight. which has it's advantages, don't get me wrong, I just prefer the old arbor style because I like components that can be fixed or replaced w/o special tools.
and finally, the 3136 uses the parachrom hairspring, which is my favorite. (the 32 might still use parachrom) but the 2236 uses silicon. which, again, has it's advantages, but cant be worked on in the event of damage, silicon just breaks and gets replaced

the 3156 is my unicorn.
