A dedicated spammer ruined it for everyone. Shat up every thread with beadpics and reported them until mods deleted or moved them to /fa/. He was quite proactive and was at it constantly. Mods are weak pussies and instead of doing something about one poster they nixed the entire general.

Note that /wt/ is targeted but the headphone general has no problems despite arguably being less technological than watches.

you get what you pay for. At the dollar entry amount at seiko 5 levels, your fit and finish wont be top notch of course. However, the movement should be decent.

I encourage you to take a look at Grand Seiko (or even their Seiko offerings around 2-4K). And I don't mean online. Like try to find some Grand Seikos in real life. No videos or pictures do the in person feel justice.

You should aspire to afford a few Grand Seikos or APs, or Rolexes or whatever you like, but you shouldn't shit on "poor" people. Everyone is poor in comparison to someone else.

Not bad. Timex has put out a lot more "trendy" looking options in the last year or so, especially their weekender and fairfield offerings ( I imagine to contest the success companies like MVMT and DW who offer similar construction and styling). I say check this watch out in person before your buy, make sure you like how it is sized for your wrist. Also in person it is easier to see the detail and quality of the dial. Timex's to me always look rather dull and flat but if you like it, that's all that matters.

If you want a simple grab and go watch and you want that timex, go for it. I always like to advise getting a quartz watch if you don't know anything about watches and try an entry level mechanical if you feel like you might get into it. Mechanical watches (namely automatics) annoy non watch people because they need motion and wear to stay alive. They have power reserves and unless you wear them every day to 2 days, usually they will lose power and die thus requiring a full hand wind or motion to restart the engine, so to speak.

reassess your budget and make sure you explore multiple options. I am a large seiko fan myself so I like to recommend Seiko for both quality entry level quartz and mechanical. Take your time and be thoughtful, choose something that speaks to you.

If all this doesn't matter to you, then get the timex and see how you like it! Timex is known for loud ticking though, just as an aside. Best of luck.

The longines cal 6512 "ultraquartz" was a second-guessing quartz movement developed in-house at longines to advance past the beta 21 that was the first swiss quartz wristwatch movement, developed by ceh during the 1960s. The ultraquartz had a quartz crystal oscillator that vibrated at 9khz, higher than the 8jhz of the beta 21, which longines highlighted extensively in its advertising. The movement was designed with as many analog components as possible, to reduce cost and improve battery life, as integrated circuits were still a large power draw on electric watches at the time. The development of mainstream cmos chips in a few years in wristwatches would ease the power concerns somewhat. The 6512 used an indexing mechansim similar to the Bulova accutron (and the beta 21) to advance the hands, but had a self-correcting feedback loop that constantly compared the frequency of the Reed motor to the frequency of the crystal and adjusted it if necessary.

Longines described the 6512 as a "cybernetic" watch given its self-correcting nature. The fact is of course that other quartz watches at the time were simply direct-driven and didn't need to be corrected. The logo of the ultraquartz was the symbol of a crystal oscillator. Watch consumers of the 1970s were very tehnology-focused and quartz watches were the most expensive and high-end watches available. Lonines would of course soon move to the stepper motor designs that became ubiquitous as early as the early 1970s.

Here's an example of how longines described the technology behind their watches in the guide that they came with. The scale in the bottom right makes no sense, but they are sure to very prominently highlight their slightly-higher-frequency oscillator compared to the 8khz of the beta 21 and original Seiko astron (which, by this time, I believe had actually moved up to 16khz). It's 8nteresting here that the tuning fork description in the bottom left goes up to 720hz, since the Omega megasonic that ran at 720hz was not released until 1973, three years after the ultraquartz. It's possible the manual is a late version, and the text was updated but not the diagram, although I don't actually think the ultraquartz was made all the way in 1973, being a very short-lived product.

And this page shows how the 9350hz quartz bar oscillator in the ultraquartz lines up with the 170hz indexing mechanism (obviously, again, not to scale). The "cybernetics" keep the peaks in sync. This isn't really too different from how Seiko spring drive works - two oscillators are measured, and one is corrected to always be locked with the master. Actually, super-high precision time sources use this as well - an atomic clock time source, either rubidium or cesium based, is locked to a 1pps output from a gps.

There is a plastic component in the quickset mechanism of the Suwa designed 56xx that is prone to shrinking and cracking due to age rather than wear, and thus it basically a matter of time until it fails in every 56xx movement.

For a while someone was manufacturing aftermarket metal replacements, but I'm not sure if they still are.

You can see the bar quartz crystal in the picture there, and more clearly here. The tiny xy-cut tuning fork 32khz quartz shape had not developed yet, but would soon become standard, as it is much smaller, runs at a higher frequency, uses less power, and is easier to tune down to the right frequency. Later in 5he accuracy wars, Omega and citizen would launch watches using an AT1 geometry crystal oscillator cut, which ran at 2.4mhz (Omega) or 4.19mhz (citizen), achieving accuracies as low as 3spy. The AT crystal geometry is much more thermoinsensitive than the xy fork geometry - indeed, citizen's new cal 0100 1spy watch uses an 8.4mhz AT crystal geometry cut.

The AT cut is also less positionally sensitive than a standard xy fork oscillator - you can see here the positional variance in a 32khz crystal is over +/-2spy, which makes a big difference when targeting low single-digit spy precision. A high-precsion 32kh watch like the Seiko Superiors, rated down to 5spy, would try to orient the crystal inside the watch in a way where common positions would cause the least variance.

Reposting watch technology related content:

One of the most commonly misunderstood aspects of mechanical movements is the difference between adjustment and regulation.

Regulation only moves the center point of the spread between the rates the watch runs at in different positions, at different temperatures, at at different extends of mainspring wind, but it does not alter the spreads between those rates.

Instead, it is adjustment that does that. Adjustment involves, at a minimum, manipulating the geometry of the hairspring such that it is in the shape it was designed to operate in (typically flat, but not always), that its coils are spaced concentrically, and that it is centered between the regulating pins (if it is a regulated balance movement).

A good article on the basics of adjustment can be found here:https://www.timekeeperforum.com/forum/threads/adjustment-and-regulation.21105/

It is beyond this baseline, however, that the real skills of adjustment come into play. For free sprung balance movements, the careful setting of the eccentric screws in the balance can simultaneously alter the adjustment and the regulation because they simultaneously affect the poise of the balance wheel and the rate of the balance wheel.

For regulated balances, beyond a basic level, adjustment becomes something of a voodoo art where the deliberate manipulation of the hairspring geometry *out of* the baseline can be used to reduce the effect of different positions, temperatures and levels of wind on the escapement by deliberately misshaping the hairspring in such a way as to anticipate how the hairspring will be affected by those factors. In truth very few watchmakers still do very much of this kind of adjustment on regulated balances, as it is both time consuming and highly skill intensive.

High-accuracy timekeeping is often built on numerous time sources that are combined. For example, TAI, the international atomic time, is created using multiple atomic clocks spread through the world, coordinated by gps. In other words, when the US nist atomic clock ensemble thinks it's exactly midnight utc, it sees that gps thinks it's 12ns after midnight, and so reports its offset as -12ns. Other atomic ensembles throughout the world measure their offsets against gps as well and report to TAI. An average of these is (retroactively) published as the official offset of TAI versus gps. In a similar way, cybernetic watches like the longines 6512 or spring drive have multiple oscillators being measured simultaneously (here, given that they're all proximate to each other, there's no need to use gps as the intermediary). But in this case, rather than averaging the oscillators, one is simply governed by another. Similar things are done in the luch 3055 quartz watch with hairspring and bulova 224 accuquartz quartz tuning fork watch.

Some watches do use an averaging technology - the Armin Strom resonance, for example, has two balances that are in a resonant relationship with each other, and a differential averages the rates of the two balances to be used to drive the timekeeping.

I did not post oh. I did post about the fashionable Armin Strom resonance and the longines ultraquartz. The luch 3055 works similarly, but in a non-cybernetic way. The luch watch factory in Belarus asked Moscow for funding to build a quartz watch, seeing the oncoming quartz crisis, but Moscow was reticent. The luch 3055 was a luch 3045 movement with a quartz timing package retrofitted in. The quartz timing package governs an electromagnet which pushes the balance back and forth, which in turn advances an escapement that advances the geartrain. The hairspring is present just as a restoring force but is not involved in timing; the balance operates as a driven oscillator. Some other manufacturers also used a balance and escapement approach to early quartz (timex was the other major one); the early 70s saw a wide variety of quartz timing and escapement mechanisms (like the longines ultraquartz) that did not eventually survive. The Soviet watch market did indeed eventually move to stepper motor quartz.

The Omega megasonic uses a "micromotor" in a sealed box to index the movement of the tuning fork. Unlike most indexing mechanisms found in watches of the period (including the accutron and the beta 21 and longines quartz movements mentioned above), the megasonic has two fingers actually advancing the wheel (they take turns).

The wheel in the box has a set magnets implanted in it, and when it turns the magnets turn a wheel outside the box, which is also permanently magnetized, which then advances the gear train. This is what makes diassembling a megasonic like defusing a bomb; touching these wheels with any metal part can permanently demagnetize and ruin them (and also you should obviously never use a demagnetizer on this watch).

Not at all. The accutrons have the index finger that advances the index wheel attached directly to the tuning fork, and moves back and forth when the fork moves to index the wheel. On the other hand this means 5he index wheel is an exposed part, as opposed to locked in a micromotor box, and is easily destroyed. The tuning fork index wheels of the 1960s and early 70s may be among the very most precisely machined parts in the world up to that date. To this day the method of creating the accutron index wheels is a trade secret. Here you can see the index fingers indexing the wheel in an accuquartz 224 (essentially a quartz-governed accutron 218, mentioned above, and largely parts-compatibke with the 218, including the index wheel).

The attachment of the index finger to the tuning fork made the accutron very shock sensitive. If the fork was shocked, it could cause the finger to advance the wheel several steps, leading to impriper time keeping. When the swiss ESA micements maker hired max hetzel, who designed the accutron, to design them a second-gen tuning fork movement, the fork was made more symmetric and the placement of the index finger was moved to a point in the fork that was less shock sensitive. This had the added benefit of greatly reducing the positional variance of the watch. The resulting esa9162 movement was widely used, including by longines, Omega, tissonic, baume and Mercier, and others.

The coils on an accutron are also super fragile and are often damaged and go open-circuit, requiring replacement (since no one really wants to do the work to re-wind them with replacement wire). In fact, this is a major issue with the Slava Transistor, a clone of the accutron produced by the Soviets. You can tell this one is a franken, with the coils replaced by Bulova coils, because the holder is green instead of red. Original Slava could in working condition are extremely rare. Slava eventually gave up on producing this watch because the vibration from the nearby subway made it impossible to produce the index wheels I mentioned earlier with the needed precision.

And a close-up of the real micromotor. You can just barely make out the spring in the left and right of the wheel, and can see the jewels on the end of the index fingers. The individual teeth on desu wheel, which are extremely small, are invisible in this image. The wheel, which is less than 2mm in diameter, has 180 teeth in this very fashionable watch.

I've looked into worldtimers, but they're all 40mm+. Closest I found was an Ardath multi-timer but they're overpriced for what they are.

Real big shame too, because I love the design of the GMT Master. Was actually considering buying a Tudor mini-sub not long ago just to fill the void for a dive watch in my life.

It’s hard for wristlets because it’s mostly genetics. Small wrists are good because they make your arms proportionally look larger but they’re bad for watches. In theory a free sprung balance, balance bridge movement like a Rolex should hold up to golfing fine. I wouldn't recommend trying it with a GS though as it uses a regulated balance and could easily have the regulator arm move.

Bring able to shower and swim with it on would also be a big plus.
Is the legendary F91w the watch for me? Is there another, smallish watch that would do the job better?
Thanks

Horseshit. Independently of the fucking spammer? So it's just a coincidence that threads would stay up until he showed up? Bullshit, they just got tired of doing their jobs. Chased away lots of regulars as well. Meanwhile headphone general, battlestation, YLYL, sticker threads etc. remain up.

Fuck you stupid faggot mods. Now /wt/ will have gridposting and /fa/ bullshit while knowledgeable posters leave. "topics discussed on /wt/ are not tech related" becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. And all because you can't handle a shitposter or two, shitposters everyone in the general have been complaining about. May your Hot Pockets be cold in the middle you greasy fat fucks.

For $12 more on Amazon the Mudman G9000 is a better package. World time, two 1000-hour stopwatches, multiple alarms, mud resistance, and a low temperature resistant LCD. It’s not much bigger, unless you have skelly wrists (if you do, go to /fit/ and start lifting).
