Reminder that parachrome hairsprings are better than silicon hairsprings for things like shock resistance but silicon is being preferred by some brands because it's easier and cheaper to manufacture.

Assembling this tiny ETA. It's literally like a 2824 only tinier.

Also it has that weird twisted stem like some other 70's ETAs.

Seiko flat out refuses to use silicon in their movements. That doesn't mean that they won't put it in their low end Seiko 5's in ten, twenty years.

>It's literally like a 2824 only tinier.
So does it have a very short power reserve then?

I just received the NH36 movement I'm going to swap into my SNK803. I hope all goes well; gaining hacking and handwinding is nice, but the truth is that swapping it instead of my old 7s26B (the one with the design issue) that doesn't keep good time is cheaper than servicing...
I'm paying more than the worth of the watch for that movement, but that should be fun to do.

Which one resists temperature changes the best? I only know that they switched to springs made of two metals for this reason, but I don't know how it works currently. Is silicon stable enough that this isn't required?

>> No.13472043

>Seiko did make it public a couple of years ago that they "believe in metal", and stated while they see the beneficial properties of silicon, they do not feel it is ready for long term use in a mechanical watch, at least in it's current state. It is brittle. But also, coils on hairspring cannot be adjusted manually.

>Another thing to keep in mind is that Seiko has been in the semi-conductor business since the 70's. For a company who has the full capability to manufacture silicon in-house, and not to use it in their watches, does make a bit of a statement.

>For a company who has the full capability to manufacture silicon in-house, and not to use it in their watches, does make a bit of a statement.
The statement could also be that they have massive amounts of tooling currently in use that they'd need to change to make the switch to silicon.

True, but Seiko seems to be led by the kind of people who don't really care about making a change for marketing purposes. If they don't see the advantage in silicon, why switch, apart from being able to say "we have silicon"?
Seiko would have never picked up the coaxial escapement.

You have to remember that there are two Seikos with different corporate cultures. Seiko Epson, which used to be Suwa Seikosha, is much more experimental and unsentimental. They are the side that manufactures quartz, Aston and spring drive watches.

Seiko Instruments, what used to be Daini Seikosha, are much more traditionalist in their design philosophy. The main reason they won't use silicon for hairsprings is this:

>But also, coils on hairspring cannot be adjusted manually.

Because this means they'd have to switch to a free sprung balance approach in order to use silicon hairsprings, since high levels of accuracy on regulated balances depends on extensive manual adjustment of hairspring geometries, which would not be possible with silicon hairsprings.

In fact the balance wheel and pallet forks already likely are silicon since they are made by photolithography, which SII did in the first place to facilitate building a 36000 bph hi-beat to follow their internal design traditions.

I live in Tokyo, just bought a SARB for ~$300 two days ago. Price is up online but brick and mortar shops and department stores are trying to get rid of them, probably to make room for whatever Seiko is replacing it with, maybe more Presages. You can find them here and there around town but it will take some digging. The big chains are mostly sold out.

>>66511835
SARX has diamond coating to protect the case and a "super clear" sapphire coating on the crystal, according to Seiko's website. Other than that SARX is a little more polished overall.

The SARX and SBDx lines have their cases and bracelets made in Japan by the same divisions that make them for Grand Seiko, though mostly without the 'zaratsu' polishing. They are manufactured and externally finished to a much higher standard than SARB tier models.

this gives me so much anxiety as a watchmaker. I don't know whether I love it or hate it. hairspring adjustment is one of the few remaining human-only skills left I'm the industry. and I have spent countless hours practicing that skill.

but hairspring adjustment sucks to do. so I'm relieved that it won't be necessary moving forward?

but also, in my own watch, I generally prefer something durable which needs maintenance over something which is replacement-only

I don't think Seiko Instruments is going to be giving up on manually adjusting hairspring geometries any time soon. The consider a core aspect of their approach and refused to adopt silicon hairsprings or free sprung balances to be able to keep it.

Hell just recently they did a limited run VFA model that was manually adjusted to run +/- 2 SPD in 6 positions over 34 days of testing, which is probably the most heavily adjusted hairspring in regulated balance movement in 40 years.

Good morning wt

The one-piece case on the cosmic is designed to improve water resistance, but comes at a cost. Since the back is not removable, to open the watch, the crown is removed, and then compressed air is blown into the watch to pop the crystal off. Then the movement and dial are removed through the front.

Not him either but you don't blast it so the sheer force of the initial blast pops it off, you slowly build the pressure until it pops off smoothly. Assuming the watch is built competently, the internal components will deal with the building pressure.

The biggest risk is that you somehow manage to hurt the dial, either by the dial moving and coming in contact with the case or crystal or the crystal contacting the dial as it comes out. It's a delicate enough prices that I wouldn't do it myself, even though I'd like to regulate this watch by about 10-15spd, but for a watches it shouldn't totally be a big issue.

The design was popular in the 60s, for both water resistance and thinness reasons. My GP cases use the same technology (which is unfortunate because it makes it harder to authenticate the serial against the observatory database)

Sending in my SKX to have the movement swapped for an NH36. I'm thinking of having some other minor cosmetic mods done on it as long as its being taken apart. Maybe something like new hands. Any suggestions for minor SKX mods? I think I'll do a ceramic bezel at some point in the future but I'm already spending ~120 on a 200 watch and I'm not ready to sink in much more at this time.

Very interesting to compare this watch to the cosmic discussed here https://forums.watchuseek.com/f20/60s-omega-seamaster-cosmic-364832.html ?
You appear to have a different (perhaps original crown) but your watch also has the weird numerals and different sized hands that the forum member alleges were changed in servicing. Beautiful watch in great shape. Where'd you pick it up? You might consider having the hands relumed.

I got a bag of old watches from a more distant relative on the condition that I need to restore one for her to wear (+80 old lady). It's the jewish side of the family, so there are a few shitters there that were considered fancy in 1960's to 80's communist Hungary. I tried to restore a British-made Timex with a disposable handwinding movement, but that was a bust. So now I'm working on a tiny Swiss women's watch in pretty good cosmetic condition.

This is the movement, ref number 561.101. Internet lists it as ETA-made, but I suspect this was originally made by someone else that got absorbed by ETA. It's 6x8 ligne like most basic quartz shitter movements, but this is pretty good quality. For starters it has a trimmer cap, and screws for the dial feet. I'll see what other shit I'll find when I start taking it apart just now.

Since this doesn't seem too well documented on the Internet maybe I should take pics of the disassembly, so I can put it together later. But maybe ETA has a technical sheet, I'll look it up.

Ceramic bezels are nice but I agree that they are a bit of an overrated feature and definitely don't look outstanding on all watches.

Maratac put one on their SR-35 and while it looks nice with the sapphire dome, I could easily do without.

I got it on eBay. I originally saw the dial reference in a shady dealer in the diamond district, but the vibe I got just made me not confident that this was a good seller. Buy the seller. Had to wait well over a year to find another one but got a great piece and patience paid off.

The hands are clean enough that I'm happy not getting them relumed. I've seen enough pieces with this dial style (at least five) to feel confident that this was an original dial style, even if I don't know if mine is original or redialed (though I have no reason to think it's redialed).

Can't speak for everyone but can talk about why I bought a seiko. Bought my SKX a year ago because I wanted a durable, affordable watch to take with me to graduate school. I also wanted an automatic movement, minimal maintenance and wasn't too fussed about accuracy. I loved my SKX for that purpose and it remains my only watch. I want to upgrade the movement because I dropped it and it runs very fast now (broken pallet fork I suspect). I'm attached to the watch because it's been all over the world with me and I quite like the aesthetics. I'm just swapping the movement to bring it back to life. After using it for a year a year I'm comfortable investing more money in it rather than buying a replacement. I don't regret buying a cheap seiko as a starter watch. I wanted the option to mod it in the future.

I sympathize with the desire to have threads concentrated on one board. Also it's difficult to deal with shitposters who spam on topic things to kill threads and discussion. Janitors don't hawk over specific threads and open every image to see if its a tudor or not. /ck/ had this issue with joey threads a while back and the moral of the story is it's shitty to be a janitor and shitposters always win. The tools you have are reporting TF images and, if you're on a real slow board or think a dedicated janitor you won't understand the issue you can also make a post quoting all of the spam. Briefly explain why it breaks the rules. then report that. That's the best way to help staff who are dealing with dozens of reports at a time understand a situation quickly.

Hundreds. What don't you like about stereotypical dress watch. Massdrop is having a sale on the SNZH53K1 which you can turn into a seiko FFF with little effort. I think the retro thin divers on leather straps can be very dressy. Here's an example of that mod without a diving bezel. https://www.artificehoroworks.com/shop/gold-fff-snk-enhanced/

Then you'd put it on something like a Brady sailcloth strap

>> No.13472288

The dress watch is the following:
Small
No complications, except maybe date
A small amount of gold or gold color
Leather strap matching outfit

Which part don't you like? You can be somewhat flexible because no one who gives a shit about following the definition 100% goes outside.

If I had to stretch it out into more general rules, they might look like this:

Lugs don't overhang wrist, it is thin
Any complications as long as the dial does not look busy
You can forgo the gold. Some people think certain nomos watches count because they follow the other rules, but I don't. You would be fine with the average nomos so long as you don't have to wear a tux.
You can use various leather and metal straps. No fabric or rubber.

You’re going to have to explain to me how Nomos does not make dress watches even though they follow every single one of the rules you’ve laid out, including offerings in gold and white gold. Or you’re just randomly and arbitrarily dictating what is and isn’t a dress watch which means your list of rules is totally fucking useless, which is what I suspect.

I completely forgot about the lambda. But nomos tends to have large lugs, you would have to check if it is too large for you. The other nomos watches have a more colorful, playful look and it might not fit for a tux event.
