Awesome work, and awesome thread. I'll probably go fabric shopping with a friend tomorrow for the shirt I'm making him, I'll post whatever we buy here.
Also, question: Anyone ever worked drafting straight on the fabric? I was talking to a tailor yesterday, he said that's how he learned and that the house he worked when younger didn't have any patterns, they just kept the customers measurements.

Thanks guys. To answer your question, I like to make patterns because I like to re-use or edit existing ones and I like to keep a reference on hand. I also don't own a fabric pen or chalk/ soap marker, so I kinda have to put my patterns on paper.

>>13442581
I see. But how do you cut your fabric then? Pin your patterns on it?
I started with this tailor's idea today, drafted a shirt on the muslin, cut and sew. Client came over, I made the adjustments, now I can copy everything on paper. I'm using the pencil in the pic for this, it's a block of 6B graphite basically, very practical and can be made precise enough by sharpening.

>> No.13442658

>>13442608
i hold it in place with a yardstick and smooth it over, then use a rolling cutter on a cutting mat. I use large blueprint paper for my patterns, so I can't really pin it. I don't have any formal training though, so I'm not sure what actually is standard procedure.

>>13442658
Ah, it's cool, I used a rolling cutter before when cutting some ties. The more common method is to trace your pattern with tailor's chalk and cut it with fabric shears, like the one in the pic.

>> No.13442690

>>13442668
That's probably a lot more accurate, but at the same time takes a little bit more time. I do cut some stuff by scissors, but I'll scotch tape the perimeter of the paper pattern onto the fabric before I cut, so it stays in place. Improvised method, but it works all the same.

This takes a long time, especially when using fabric that wrinkles easily and comes folded from the factory, you get deep creases that need to be ironed out. Ironing a 45” wide piece of cloth is time consuming too. I tried cutting all my patterns into cardboard thinking I could flatten the fabric and trace simultaneously, but the final cuts were rarely perfect and ultimately messes w the fit. I have yet to find a better solution though.

>> No.13443615

you really oughta iron your fabric before using it anyway though, better yet, wash it, then iron it with plenty of steam
some fabrics might shrink down in the wash and during the steaming process a bit and taking that to account making a pattern is a bitch and a half, its way easier to work with properly 'prepared' fabric
its not that much work honestly

>> No.13443625

>>13443609
It does, but you get more precision and better cutting than with rolling cutters, at least in my experience. And since I pre-wash my fabrics before cutting anyway, to avoid later shrinkage, the ironing is just par for the course.

The second one, unfortunately, which is why so many of them start a brand and then go bankrupt. Gianni Versace once said something like a good designer is before anything good at sewing, and he was mostly right. While there are notable exceptions, such as Galliano or Ralph Lauren, understanding how garments are constructed and how to work patterns is an invaluable skill. Without this sort of background the would-be designer has a much harder time coming up with things that actually work in the real world, not to mention he will have a rather limited clothing vocabulary, so to speak.

>>13455629
They do have, but graduating in Fashion is a very hit or miss thing, in my experience. You can learn A LOT; I know I sure did; but it's up to you, and not everyone is willing to put in the work. Not only that, but being the owner of your brand is, like any other kind of entrepreneurship, the same as getting other jobs on top of being a fashion designer, and you're not necessarily trained on those.
All things being said, I encourage you to go for it, if you're interested in working in fashion. The designer and brand owner thing is just the more glamorous side, but if you're a good tailor or dressmaker, and if you're good with patterns, you can work behind the scenes and you'll never lack for work or money. Think of it this way: Galliano is successful, but he only got so far because of his patternmaker, Bill Gaytten, who's been with him since college iirc. That guy made some serious cash, even though few people knew who he was until he took the helm at Dior with Galliano's firing. Now think that every single big name designer has some pattern makers and trusty sample makers (not sure if that's the term in english, but anyway) who get PAID because they are essential, and these folks don't have the huge overhead a brand owner has. They just do their work, many of them freelance, and make their living like that.
Anyway, rambled a bit, but my point is, don't get discouraged: if you wanna, go for it.

>what do you do? are you in fashion?
Gonna copy what I wrote in the other thread here:
Graduated in Fashion Design, currently on sick leave from work (public servant) but working as a tailor, shirt and tie maker from home, and will continue to do so once my doctor gives me the ok so I can quit my day job. I also teach tie making classes at the local tailor's association.

Staples can be sharp. Maybe buy some iron on fabric and iron it on the inside to cover the exposed staple edges. Alternatively, you could simple stitch the patch on, sewing is pretty easy to learn and a useful skill to have.

>>13467981
Your biggest challenge might be patterning the sleeves to fit properly. Leather may or may not feed through your machine, do you know if yours is rated for leather? Most vintage ones can handle leather while many modern ones can't. Maybe consider waxed cotton as an alternative, velveteen, or corduroy for something with a similar sheen but less texture. Sounds like an interesting project nonetheless.

Like >>13467995 said, check if your machine can handle it, or even consider hand stitching. One of the chalenges about working with leather is that you can't make a mistake, the holes won't disappear like on regular fabric. But it's a really cool idea, denim is strong enough to support leather and they both look good together. I trust it's indigo denim + brown or reddish leather you have in mind, right?

I put a pair of jeans on a cutting mat, opened the outseams, then cut the legs into strips. I brought the strips over to my sewing machine and sewed them so they were overlapping like roof shingles. Rinse and repeat, it's pretty tedious really. Then, once the strips had enough length to be considered a leg, I reattached them. Repeat for the other leg. Then, sew the outstanding closed. I didn't bother hemming, just cut the legs and sewed a ring around where the hem would be so it won't fray too much. Pic related is progress on the strips.

>>13474380
Learn how do do flat felled seams, and then do a lot of them. That's pretty much it. It just looks like it would be incredibly time consuming.

I feel like this isn’t the right thread for this, but I’m a fashion student and I’ve started to gain awareness that student work is usually clearly distinguishable from “nice” clothing and not in a good way. It just looks amateurish... can’t quite put my finger on it.
Looking for other eyes to tell me what fashion students get wrong. I’m hoping to avoid doing this in my own practise so it’s sort of diy related???

>> No.13474544

>>13474539
Probably a lot of patterning issues. Does the clothing fall on the body nicely or does it sit awkwardly? How do they finish the seams? Do they use cheap material? Are the pockets or other details symmetrical? Do they cut the fabric with regards to the grain or just randomly?

simple designs? Biting off more than they can chew? maybe just strange designs altogether. For me, I usually know because most fashion students cannot pattern shoulders and necklines correctly, so the garment sort of hangs off the back of the model's neck.

>> No.13474615

>>13474556
the more that i think about it, the more i think it might be about thick details. Student or amateur projects usually have thin seams and zippers. Look at cheasecloth though, he's an amateur but his stuff looks pretty much like something you'd expect from a designer.

You might want to pick one collar and stick with it, I don't think that part will work for a vertical split. But, if you're open to suggestions, you could take the collar band from one of the shirts and the collar leaf from the other. It's going to be a lot more work, but I think it would look cool. Other than that, follow >>13473354's advice: leave room for seam allowance.

>>13474539
Graduated in fashion, so my two cents: Most fashion design students don't learn proper pattern making (except for the ones who go to pattern making courses, that is) and don't learn how to sew and finish their garments properly. In my experience, most focus too much on the designing part and get lazy when it comes to the grind of actually bringing things to life. You have to be more or less a perfectionist when it comes to these things, which means training and redoing things over and over again until it looks professional.
