>tfw actually dress like it's 1958 every day
>don't go overboard, but certainly authentic enough to the period to stand out
>regularly receive compliments, occasionally from strangers

Seriously, as long as you're not pretentious about it and don't dress like it's Halloween, don't be ashamed to rock a style that isn't common right now. You may even start a trend

Although I'm too lazy to post pics, I can rattle off a few of the basics of late 50's mensware. Plus I'll dump some inspo here shortly

>Pants
Usually creased, higher waistline, in colors such as black, brown, light navy, and mid khaki. Cuffs and pleats are acceptable, as well as looser fit. For an Ivy look, opt for flat front chinos in brown/khaki. Working class guys would usually wear work pants like Dickies in black or navy.

>Jeans
Almost always darker indigo, purchased non-faded and oftentimes rigid. At that point in time, jeans came in standard 'long' lengths in order to be hemmed at home, but people would mostly cuff them instead. Levi's 501, Wrangler 13WMZ, and original Lee 101s come to mind.

>Shirts
There's a lot of variability here, so bear with me. Dress shirts were usually broadcloth, poplin, or oxford, in a relatively baggy fit by today's standards. Barrel cuffs were standard, but (double) french cuffs with links were quite acceptable. Camp shirts with cuban collars were popular, both solid and patterned- left untucked. Chambray or poplin work shirts were common among the lower class, and even short sleeves were usually rolled to add some flair to them. Western shirts were also popular, with pearl snaps and excessively bright colors by today’s standards. Aloha shirts were big in the mid 50’s, but try to stick with classic and bright patterns for the look.

>T-Shirts
Most men just wore plain white undershirts, but there was some variation as time went on. Striped T-shirts, darker solid colors, and ringed collar t-shirts all became available towards the end of the decade. Usually tucked in. Wifebeaters were seldomly worn as outerwear, but some photos of greasers have a few.

>Shoes
Shoe types were relatively limited, and usually were just black/brown oxfords, derbies, basketball shoes and penny loafers. White buck shoes and saddle shoes were popular amongst college students, but the former usually required a bag of chalk to keep looking nice. Penny loafers were almost always brown, and black ones were considered extremely nerdy. Basketball shoes were either hi or low top converse, pf flyers, or similar clones in black, white, red, or navy. White crew socks were surprisingly common, as were black dress socks, argyle, and ‘fun’ patterns in subdued colors.

>Boots
Boots were typically worn by the working class, greasers, and rockabillies, and were usually service patterned (Think Iron Rangers, Corcorans, or US army issued Type II roughouts), engineer, or western style. Jeans were cuffed over boots, and stacking was considered poor form.

>everyone was on acid in the 50s
Ohhhkay anon. Sure they were. Even when psychedelic culture peaked in the late 60s, it was a relatively small minority actually dosing when compared to the huge impact it had on pop culture. I've heard plenty of anecdotes of people being heckled and harrassed in the late 60s for having hair past their ears. It wasn't as weird and wild as people think.

>Sunglasses
Common sunglass varieties include wayfarer, clubmaster, and American Optical Aviators
>Sport Coats
Sport coats could be quite bold color-wise, and usually featured patterns such as Atomic Fleck, Houndstooth, Windowpane Plaid, Corduroy, and Glenn Plaid. Lapels slimmed up by the end of the decade.
>Suits
In stark contrast to the vibrant patterns on sport coats, business attire was as conservative as ever. Black, charcoal, gray, navy, and brown were the most common varieties, and were usually just single color with very little fanfare, although pin-stripe and muted patterns were certainly available.
>Casual Jackets
There are a lot of varieties to men’s jackets, so I’ll briefly overview the main types. Leather jackets were often patterned after the USAF A2 (brown) bomber jacket, and the Schott Perfecto motorcycle jacket (black). Denim jackets were dark indigo, and usually the levi’s Trucker style or Wrangler Cowboy Cut style. Jimmy dean popularized the Harrington Jacket, which is a specific type of cotton windbreaker, usually in vibrant colors. Dickies work jackets in polyester were popular among working class. Gabardine jackets were extremely common as well, coming in patterns that would only fly in the atomic age. Varsity jackets were a hit amongst high school athletes, and were modelled after the US tanker jacket in WWII. Unstructured sport coats and cardigans were standard wardrobe pieces for older men.

>>13468325
>Ties
Ties were extremely slim by ’58, just enough to cover the buttons on a standard dress shirt. Black, navy, and maroon were essential colors, and patterns ranged from rep striped, dotted, and even remnants of art deco. Flat bottom ties were available, but considered a maverick choice
>Hair Products
This was the age of Brylcreem, Vitalis, and pomade, so prepare for the grease. The Wet Look was in full swing, and people usually used elongated styling combs or military-style boar brushes to keep their hair waved up and shining like an exxon oilfield. Pomades popularized by the likes of Elvis, Johnny Cash, James Dean, and a multitude of black musicians included Murray’s, DAX, Sweet Georgia Brown, Black and White, and Royal Crown (pomade, NOT Hair dressing). Haircuts were regularly maintained every two weeks, but you can extend the hell out of a haircut’s life by using an electric trimmer along the neck and sideburns every few days. I can’t tell you how to style your hair correctly, so you’ll have to watch a shitty youtube tutorial instead.

Hope this helps!

not the same poster but this must be an exaggeration, drug use was only present in the hippie movement and other counterculture. most people shunned hippies during this time period and dressed conservatively.
