Russian / Communist jacks typically have a shitty shape and presentation as well. There are always exceptions but I find that it is generally the rule.

It's a combination of anatomical shaping through use or design coupled with one of a few types of pant legs.

You need a low-profile rounded toe ( A 'sharknose', pic related) and you either need pants that start wide and taper down to just slightly bigger than the bootshaft (if you have wide-shafted boots than don't hug your calves) OR you need boots that hug the calves and you need straight or form-fitted trousers.

Most of the Russian / slav boots have a box toe that doesn't lend itself to most fits.

Here's another pic where I don't think the boots 'look good'.

Guy on the far left appears to have sharknose boots ( when leather gets wet and dries repeatedly , this effect can be created on boots that have boxier toes) but the tapering of the bootshafts is typical of most in the russian style and it's not anatomical. The result is that baggy 'sack' look that isn't really appealing.

On the matter of breeches - here's some.

Most of these dudes look good because their tunics are short, their breeches are well fitted and the boots hug the calves and ankles. The shape of the foot and toebox is also relatively anatomical.

Boots can also be the wrong height for the wearer. For example, these are some pretty sick boots.

They have an anatomical shape in the calf, foor and toebox so they're visually very pleasing BUT they are so tall thaat I cannot imagine a person they would look good on. They would certainly hit or go above the knee on anyone under 6 feet tall and look like the wearer was in their dad's boots.

Context and framing can also impact how an outfit is interpreted. This is why we can look at pics of soldiers in the field and say 'wow cool!' and then scroll down and see a picture of someone wearing the same thing in the street and go 'oh he looks strange'

I am sorry for using one of your images here, telny, because this is not about slamming you. This is one of the few ways I can draw this comparison though because the fits are almost identical.

I think with different staging/presentation this could have been pulled off more effectively , even if we both agree desert stuff looks pretty rough

Anyways, TLDR:
Jackboots look good when they have some semblence of anatomical shape coupled with certain types of fitted/tapered or structured trousers.
