that being said, i love going to brooksbrothers in downtown, and the Lake avenue Pasadena Macy's has decent discounts on all things Tommy Hilfiger and Nautica (polo is overpriced, like with every macy's)
Clarks has some stores throughout LA county

When we go shopping, we either travel or order stuff from OC (Fashion island, the outlets in san clemente) for Sperry's, Nautical and Hilfiger outlets, eddie bauer and (with discretion) tommy bahama outlets.
She loves vinyard vines (dude cute whales lmao)

Assuming that's Ralph, pretty poor man

Imitation 'club' shit is one part of 'preppy' fashion which I fundamentally disagree with. Maybe it's a cultural thing because I'm British, but here those kind of ties are reserved for actual clubs or schools you belong to. At uni I had my Oxford tie. my college bow, a sports team bow, and a bow from a society I belonged to (and my old school tie, which I never wore). Yes, faux club is very divisive. I’m British too, but I like the aesthetic. I would have bought my own university and college ties if the colours weren’t so loud. I like Ralph Lauren’s playful attitude towards traditional WASPy motifs. The ties I own don’t just feature crests; they include skulls, foxes and tennis rackets too. Arriviste, perhaps, but very easy on the eye in my opinion. There was a great post on Ivy Style about this topic. The consensus seemed to be in favour, as long as you don’t wear the ties of institutions you aren’t affiliated with. Regardless, a major part of preppy style is imitation. Your logic forbids ownership of regimental ties by those not in the military; tartan by those who do not belong to a Scottish clan and boat shoes if you don’t have a nautical background. Those are all prep staples; the difference lies in the degree of pretence.

>frat
Unless you're in an Ivy League or a classic New England school, it's a forced style. Being in Greek life has it's own blend of elitism and to conserve that, "frat" style is enveloping a uniform that sets them apart from "GDIs" and it's tiring. This is how Vineyard Vines, Southern Tide, Southern Proper, etc., are still in business because they're staples for those trying to find an identity. You very rarely see these brands in traditional settings, unless it's forced because VV sponsored a regatta or something of that nature.

>prep
If you've read Take Ivy, that's the gist of it. Prep is colloquially short for "prep school" where some had uniforms and generally speaking, their attendees were generally from wealthy New England families, where dressing like that was the norm. Through time, it's never really changed because a lot of prep staples are tried and true; why change something that has always worked? Old money doesn't spend lavishly on clothes, cars, or things to set them apart; money is invested in real estate, boats, and other things that have longevity. The clothes you wear on your back are just clothes; there's nothing more than that. Look at KJP, the majority of his wardrobe is hand-me-downs from his father.

>> No.13326564

>>13326511
KJP isn't a very good example, he dresses pretty bad. Also I remember him saying in an interview to the NYT that neither he nor his dad are prep, just regular new england folks. I think some of his polo shirts might be hand me down, better than nothing but the really interesting hmd stuff is bb shirts and sport jackets. They just don't make them like they used to, or they're hard to come by.

Sorry but I disagree with these attitudes towards style.

Prep (IMO) is:
clean personal grooming with an emphasis on a natural look
a focus on classic cuts that last forever (medium size lapels, clothes that aren't too slim-fit)
a focus on high quality clothing that isn't ostentatious
natural fabrics
casual
sporty

Whilst certain brands might embody these qualities, prep is more than just a list of brands or a socio-economic status. In fact, many of these attitudes towards clothing would appeal to people from more humble backgrounds.

Anyone got some brands that make quality shirts with substantial collar roll for Europeans? Looking for shirts around 100 euros

Here's what I've tried so far:

>Gant Rugger £80 often on sale (Made in shitty sweatshops oxfords are a bit thin though)
>A Day's March £70 (made in Portugal) My current favourite brand.
>Triple Stitched £100 (made in England) somewhat lame collars and slightly short.
>Howards £140 (Way too expensive but beautiful shirts. Somewhat limited button down selection)
>Hilditch and Key/Turnbull and Asser £150 (fits are very big but the quality of materials are undeniably great. Limited button down selection.
>Gitman Vintage £140 (made in USA beautiful fabrics, beautiful collar roll, incredibly stupid short af shirt length. I wouldn't buy again.)
>Bellerose £120 (made in Portugal, beautiful collars and materials, sadly the fit is very weird and the shirts rise up on the sides making them too short on the side to tuck in and too long in the front to leave untucked)
>j.crew (crap materials, made in sweatshops, always on sale, skimpy amounts of materials)

I'm waiting on shirtonomy and cotton society orders (online mtm services) so hopfully they'll be good. I'll probably try Swann & Oscar at some point as the selection of fabrics look great.

>no fuse or canvas
From a quick search, they just use a thinner canvas. Using no canvas at all is a terrible idea since the canvas is what gives the suit any sort of weight. And even then, any level of fusing is a sign of lower quality, and it is pretty common in B.B. and Press’ suit lines. If you look at the Google docs link I posted, you can see that those two rank lower than a bunch of other suit makers for a variety of reasons.

I am genuinely having trouble finding suits without any canvas or fusing whatsoever, and the results I have found suggest that it's pretty disastrous. I don't think that either brand even provides such a thing, and they instead opt for fully fused, half fused, or fully canvassed suits. Even moving beyond the canvassing stuff, their suits fall short in a variety of ways. That's not to say that they're bad, it's just that there are way better alternatives for the same or less.

I don't like that Vineyard Vines ostentatious style prep. Brooks Brothers seems to have deteriorated a lot in quality, mainly going off of name recognition at this point.

The pique or jersey fabric of a polo is fairly distinct from the fabric of a rugby shirt. There is also a difference over button material: rugby shirts use rubber, and polos use plastic or some type of shell. Last, while polos typically feature a non-contrasting rib collar (though they can have a more structured collar similar to a dress shirt's), rugby shirts' collars are structured and are (usually) colored a contrasting white. All of that being said, the differences are fairly minimal and unimportant to the average person.

>too casual
Everyone in the prep/ivy pictures that get posted in these threads as inspo is dressed incredibly casual for the time.
Staples of the prep look: tennis sweaters, polos, canvas sneakers, bean boots, boat shoes, Barbour jackets, anoraks, etc are all utilitarian clothing specifically designed for outdoor activities and sports. They only seem formal today in comparison to what most people wear. At the time and on Ivy League campuses the style was dressed down and rebellious.

Prep has grown to mean something else than what it meant at first. It was originally rebellion from affluent families and cultured society while still staying within a dress code.
