Well, they're not actually comfortable or functional compared to... Well, pretty much any lifestyle shoe with support tech designed post-1980. And as far as retro models go, they don't hold up aesthetically to more deep cut options like onitsuka tigers, classic adidas, etc. They're just cheap and available, which is why they're they go-to for Mexican teenagers and alt bros who played Tony Hawk Pro Skater as a kid and built their adult life around the soundtrack.

Personally what bothers me about them is that wearing Vans shows you KIND OF care about what you wear (otherwise you'd be wearing off brand, $10 Payless shoes or Kirklands or whatever), but not enough to put in any real effort or energy. They brand has this aloof, "chill vibe," but it's just a bad, lazy look.

So the question shouldn't be "why does /fa/ hate Vans," it should be "why does anyone like Vans. And don't say because they're cheap, because that's not an answer!"

compared to fucking Vans? Yes, even a Gazelle looks like a mature, cultured footwear choice next to literal middle school wear. Keep in mind I'm from Southern California and see grown ass men wearing checkered slip ons and studded belts with cut off dickies on a regular basis, so my bar is incredibly low.

And if you skate in them, fine, but treat them like you would an ugly running shoe or soccer cleat and take that shit off when you're not actively participating in that activity.
