One of the main characteristics of being a sleazebag is charisma. You've got to be able to charm the hell out of someone.

Exhibit A is the character Pat Healy from "There's Something About Mary" (very sleazy movie, I recommend it.

Pat Healy is a private investigator hired to track down a guy's high school prom date so they can reconnect. Healy finds her, but uses what he finds to trick the girl into falling for him, and not following through for his client (who's still paying him). Pat Healy is able to kill the girl's dog and resuscitate it, and in doing so, make the girl thing he's special.

While he dresses the part, it's his charm and willingness to lie to this girl and his client that motivates him. You can be dressed prep head to toe, but if you can act like Pat Healy, you're on your way to being sleaze.

Exhibit B is a guy named Blue, from "Sucker Punch". While he dresses nicer, he plays two roles. In the fantasy world, he's a nightclub owner who holds girls prisoner to be sold of as prostitutes to clients. In the real world, he's an orderly at a women's psych ward who abuses the patients. He's charismatic in both, but in the fantasy land, he dresses very well: tailored suits, just enough gold and jewelry, and that slick mustache. Guys like Pat Healy probably look up to guys like fantasy Blue.

In the case of Blue, his elegant wardrobe is what makes him a slick character. It makes him come off to the audience, and even to some of the girls, as a legit guy. This is where not dressing like a hobo is the boon of the sleaze. Dressing nicely almost always elicits trust from people. You've got to use that trust to get what you want, whether it's money, women, a place to stay, a free drink, etc. Undeserved trust should be like cologne to a successful sleaze. Even if it's not fully trust, it can mean a chance or a second chance at getting what you want.

The reason I'm making this thread is because there's not discussion or good information coming out of the other ones and it makes people think that Exhibit C here will pass as sleaze.

I'm merely explaining what I've gathered. So far the threads include the picture of the guy smoking at a gas station and guys like this thinking it's a costume that can be put on at a whim. This guy is a product of the threads that don't offer any insight as to what constitutes the genre.

Unfortunately, it feels like there's an age cutoff for sleaze. If you're under 30, it'll be harder to just make it a look. Because of this, I'd like to flesh out the details and help guide people to what they want.

Exhibit C comes straight from the last thread

While being a criminal isn't necessary to being sleazy, I've gathered that looking like you might be helps the image. I won't advocate for anyone to break the law for an outfit. Adding the gaudy fake jewelry can help you here. Expensive accessories that appear outside your means can come off as either ill-gotten or make you look like a reckless spender, both of which are sleazy.

Steve Buscemi plays a lot of roles that can give you inspiration for the criminal-look-while-not-being-criminal, although he does play plenty of criminals.

For more inspiration, I think it's important to think about the origins. When I think of sleazy dudes, I think of the west and southwest in the 60s-70s. There really wasn't a whole lot out there. Cities out there were basically just flashy rest stops in the desert. When tourists started coming through Vegas, you made money by selling them vices or scamming them. Miami was more populated, but parts were definitely similar. I definitely get the sleazy vibe from the 'exotic' part of the US from this era, since there was plenty of opportunity to do dirty while it was being established.

Hunter S. Thompson definitely has the aesthetic but it's hard to say that he was a sleaze personality-wise. The thing is, in which most of these characters are based, their look was somewhat fashionable at the time. Pics of some guy in the 80's wearing a gold watch; well it was fashion then.

Wouldn't modern day sleaze really have a somewhat modern day fashion aesthetic?

Imagine you are in some Northern England town, it's cold, rainy and a little bit dull. You turn up like you just time traveled from 1985 Miami and would you really look sleazy?

Gold chains, hairy chests, strong cologne was the norm for the 80's which is what most of this sleaze is based off.

Honestly, there are a couple things to address here. Mostly that here- on a fashion discussion board- god forbid we actually /discuss/ fashion and develop lore and critique style. This actually helps solidify movements in art and culture. Literally anyone in art knows this. Surrealism, Vaporwave, Imagism, G-Funk, and Hardcore all have been preserved by conversations and critiques about the genre they were within. What did and what didn't belong inside and so on.

Further, the idea that you can't be sleaze if you're on a fashion board is kind of misguided considering the diversity of posters and age range. Why couldn't I be into Ricks or whatever the fuck and casually browse the board while at the bar coming back from doing cocaine in the bathroom with two hookers? Even if they are just incels, what's stopping them from using trial and error to develop into the type of person they wanted to be through fashion? Isn't that the whole point of fashion??

5'5 here. IMO shorter is better. Sleazy means being greasy, creepy or otherwise undesirable. Being short and having greasy hair can therefore be good with sleazecore since sleaze does not attempt to be alpha or intimidating.

The point is that it's contrived in the wrong way, ie. anyone who did dress like this in 1970-90 was doing so to fool marks and feed their delusions of grandeur, not look like they wanted to. Alex Cameron and Nick Cave dress like this (vaguely in the latter's case) because the image lends itself to the type of character they've played and lifestyle their music deals with. It's not something to aspire to. Wearing pinky rings and hawaian shirts is not in itself art.
