Currently have:
Timex Weekender - White dial, Brown Leather Strap
G Shock DW5600E Black Rubber Strap

What do I get next? I was thinking a Seiko 5 in 37mm with a stainless strap bracelet, but not I'm not sure what dial color to get. I'm looking for something to wear most of the time, casually and maybe a little dressed up. Simplicity is nice. I like day/date windows and don't care for numerals.

Orients like look nice but I'm a 6" wristlet and I think they wear too big.

I'm open to a 45KS too, I think the 45-7000 KS and 4520-8000 GS are both beautiful and it seems like the 4500 series movements are pretty good as far as finicky 36,000 bph vintage movements go. The KS is a lot cheaper but so far I've had better luck finding GSs in good condition and not heavily polished, so I'm willing to pay for the GS if a good one comes up.

The one on the orange watch is a pretty flimsy folded link thing. I think it fits the watch well so I use it, but it's not very good. All three watches have hooded lugs so I don't think they would look very good without the original bracelets anyway.

The other two bracelets are a lot more intricate and high quality and they're super comfortable. All of those little links are solid. They have a kind of weird clasp design that probably isn't the most secure, but it's also very easy to adjust and you don't have to remove any links. Personally I like bracelets and I think these style of 70s Seikos look a lot better on the bracelets than on leather.

here's some insight from someone who's been in the watch game for a while now.

all these little cheap pieces of shit we buy for the sake of aesthetic (casios, seiko alpinists, timex, russian dogshit brands etc) are the biggest drain on your income. we all know we want a high end watch, why not save money for one? My biggest mistake when i started collecting was filling my watchbox up with obscure or unique pieces from no name brands. after a few years I had 20 watches that never got worn so I sold them all.

Bottom line is, just save your money for the real high end watch that you want. trust me on this one. all the compliments from literally whos on the street about your "nice" 24 dollar plastic casio aren't worth the pride of owning an actual Rolex. and don't even get me started on that grand seiko bullshit. nobody cares about the craftsmanship.

sooner or later everyone comes around. they think it's cool to wear the equivalent of a karmann ghia because the quirky girl at work noticed it, but when they realize that they could get a vintage BMW if they'd saved up just that much more they always come around..

so do your wallets a favor, get rid of the junk and just save up. thank me later

i know you're trolling, but using your example to highlight my point the watch in your pic is $55,000.

55K for a Seiko.

Who in their right mind would pay that much for a Seiko? If somebody held a gun to your head and said "right, you can either pay up 55 grand for the seiko or 10 grand for this 2018 rolex in pic related what'll it be mate?" under what rational circumstance would you choose the seiko?

people respect branding and heritage, I work with an old retired Filipino navy vet who wears a 2008 Rolex GMT, the thing is already dinged to all hell because he wears it everyday but guess what, people see it's a rolex and dont care what condition it's in. he could have worn a brand new 55 thousand dollar grand seiko and nobody would have batted an eyelid.

I handled a lot of rolexes in person and only a few GS before making my purchase. I could write a longer explanation but here are my key points:

1) I realized that where I live, there are like 10 rolexes spotted a day. I find the dials and bezels to be beautiful but the case work is uninspired. Call it "classic" I suppose. Check out the 44gs casework on the GS SBGJ001 in person, I was mesmerized. At the end of the day, I am wearing and looking at my watches for me, not for brand recognition (and I do like some of Rolexs work). You have to try many models on wrist to really know which you are attracted to, and GS grabbed my attention 10x more tan Rolex which can be found at every mall. In that sense, I would again and again spend 6k on something I was very much interested in rather than someting I know would hold its value more/ more recognized/ etc etc.

2) I am much more interested in GS as a company. I like their design language, work in mechanical and spring drive movements, and accuracy of their fine quartz. Case work is in my mind better than rolex (albeit not the BEST in the business, I can't say that since I have not seen all offerings from every company). Still, nothing not to admire.

3) Clout means nothing to me. In fact I get so much attention from WIS and Rolex owners on my GS that I'm having fun. And non-WIS won't grab me unwanted attention. In fact, I have had a few sub wearers ask me about my watch because it was so beautiful. I think a few were turned off by the Seiko brand, but hey, I aint one of them and that's ok.

At the end of the day, I am inspired and attracted to GS over Rolex, simple as that. And I wanted a sub for years. Don't get me wrong, Rolex has amazing watches. I am now just much more of a Japanese watch enthusiast than I ever was for Swiss.

Sure. those are some very valid arguments, far be it from me to tell someone how to spend their money, just genuinely curious. I bought a lot of watches that were at the very bottom of high end (Sinn, NOMOS, Tudor) and personally the nagging thought of "for a few thousand more I could have gotten a Rolex" always nagged at me. Finally got one and that was that. A lot of people prefer the above brands to rolex but i just knew i was playing a means to an end. so like you said at the end of the day you're just buying watches for yourself and not anyone else.

And now poorfags wonder why you buy any other watch because in their mind, you must prove to others in your class that you "made it" out of said class to higher income level.

They appreciate only for the name on the face not the quality or functionality of the product

Would I look like a dumb ass if I bought pic-related for $2.5K? I saw some threads on other forums saying that Gucci watches are overpriced and suggesting other brands like Hamilton instead. However, those watches all look super generic, while the Gucci one I posted looks like no other watch I have seen. And it will also look more impressive since everyone has heard of Gucci.

Fuck you man, I'm trying to understand why I shouldn't buy the Gucci watch. I don't want to just blindly drop thousands of dollars on a watch because people on the internet say it is better than the one that I like. But I really don't get what makes a watch more desirable than another one beyond being able to tell time, being aesthetically pleasing, and being impressive to other people. I am sure there is a good explanation, but I have yet to hear one.

For example, I am a car guy. People who don't know anything about cars say that a Lamborghini is just a flashy looking item that douchebags use to show off their wealth. However, as a car enthusiast I know there is much more to it than that. By buying a Lamborghini instead of a used up Toyota, you get a car that accelerates faster, handles better, sounds nicer, and is much more enjoyable to drive in general. And you can also take take it to the racetrack to really drive it hard, so it opens up doors to entirely new hobbies.

Can you offer a comparable explanation as to why I should buy a watch from a dedicated watchmaking company, or are you just going to spout memes at me?

as it stands its a "i am new money with bad taste" piece, which is gucci's market at present.

I am not sure I understand what you mean by this. You say that I shouldn't be here if I am buying things to impress others, but that the regulars here buy things to impress others? It seems like impressing other nerds on the internet is shallower and more of a waste of time than trying to impress co-workers and other people in real life. I honestly appreciate the value of feeling smug by thinking ""yeah i could've gotten a rolex but this is the same quality just not enough people know it", precisely because Rolex is just so typical. BUUUT, there's a ton of other brands that work to the same effect and have at least a bit more clout and style. Omega is cheaper, has some really beautiful watches, and is a bit less known than Rolex, kind of works. Jaeger Le Coultre is a bit more expensive than Rolex, but its got more clout, being Swiss and all, and its models are really beautiful (guaranteed looks). Same with brands like Zenith. The problem with Grand Seikos is, IMO, that they are too simple for their price tag.

A basic Reverso or MUT Moon or something like that is roughly in the Rolex price range, but JLC also does crazy complications that go way beyond anything Rolex does. Any super expensive Rolex outside of Cellini is just going to be the same basic model but covered in precious metals or gemstones rather than being any more interesting from a technical standpoint.

Also Grand Seiko is not simple at all, their watches have insanely intricate finishing up close which is kind of their whole appeal. As a rule, GS watches pretty much do not have any simple rounded edges anywhere on the dial or hands and they look spectacular very close up.

Honestly, there's no difference between beaters and grails. Nobody gives a fuck what watch you wear, and they all serve two purposes: to tell time and look good. In the year of our lord 2018, mass production has made it so you can make a good looking, functional watch for well under a hundred dollars.

If you think you should "save up" for a watch, you're spending way too much. There's really no difference in appearance and functionality between a $50 watch and a $500 watch. If you like the name brand on a particular watch enough to pay hundreds for it, go for it. But keep it mind that it's not an investment, just a frivolous splurge.

I daily wear a $4,000 watch and he's mostly right. Firstly, if you buy a watch it should be for yourself because nobody else gives a shit. Secondly, diminishing returns set in steeply and almost immediately and from a purely functional standpoint expensive watches hardly ever tell time any better than cheap watches.

Although there's much more I like about my watch than the brand name, for one thing. But I certainly didn't fool myself into pretending it's a fucking investment because it's not, it's a luxury purchase. Even if I decide to sell it on later and recoup my cost it's still not an """investment""" and I hate how often that justification gets used.

So far i’ve heard that they just take chinkshit auto movements and redial them, so they arent authentic. This makes reddit hate them, but i’m personally allures to owning a frankenwatch no one else will have, especially because even reddit admits they keep okay time.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual 34mm Olive Dial
Most of the Oyster Perpetuals (no date) are the same length tip of the lug to other tip. The bracelet on the 34mm goes down to 19mm from the 36mm's 20mm width. Overall though the bracelet to watch ratio is really balanced whereas with 39mm watches the bracelet looks too thin, imho. Also, unlike most other people I find the extra complications, like the date, are visual clutter.

I've looked at tool watches and vintage pieces. My current watch is a Casio F-94W. I'm on the water regularly but don't actually need a diver so until then anything more is overkill.

Anybody got a recommendation for 34 to 36mm minimalist watches? To me that is really where it is at.

I think 36mm is ideal and I wanted something a little sportier as an everyday watch so I picked a 114270 Explorer. I love it, I would highly recommend it. The OP is a great watch too and I guess if you want something a little dressier or want to buy new then it's a better choice. I agree that the 39 is too big and has chunkier proportions, but the 34 is pretty femenine.

I love my vintage watches but I would probably pick something new or almost-new if it's going to be your daily watch. It's much more convenient to have something with a sapphire crystal and reliable water resistance. Vintage watches just need more attention and care that you don't always want to deal with.

That is pure class. The simple baton hands are my preference though. Your Explorer and an Air King are probably better watches than a smaller Oyster. Probably a better investment too. Your watch is right in the same area of what I consider to be the perfect watch.

Thanks for the support on new or almost-new vs vintage. That's really what I'm thinking especially at the low end of the price scale . Maybe I'll look at a 36mm Oyster in Blue with the 3,6 & 9 but I really like that olive dial. I haven't seen the grey one or the white grape in person so that could be an option as well.

I really like the design but my plastic toy doesn't fit when I try wearing more formal clothes.
The a500 and the ae1200 are cool but too big. The a158w is pretty much perfect, thanks !
