I have a Milsub itch that needs scratching. Should I go for the Squale 1545 or the Steinhart OVM?
I tend to lean towards the latter since it costs less and the no-date dial is more faithful to the original Milsub design.
However, I've heard that Steinharts tend to suffer from QC issues and wear large (which would probably look stupid on my skinny manlet wrist).

What say you, /fa/?

No, it’s a very good watch. To answer your question, those are much better movements than low end quartz watches and function different than them, but I personally don’t like them. I don’t really like anything Breitling makes but Grand Seiko is fantastic, but if I was going to spend that much it would be on an automatic. The reality is just that they type of people who generally buy mid to high end watches (basically anything other than a basic timex) are likely to be at least moderately successful and probably aren't gonna work as salespeople at a mid-tier jeweler.

to some extent you're correct. I love vintage pieces but anything past the 50's i could care less about. I think the mid-late 50's is that sweet spot where sport watches (the kind i like the most) really came into their own in terms of design and functionality. To me most things from the 40's or earlier all look like the same ancient Seamasters or PP chronos.

So I'd say you have a period from about 1950 to 1980 which for me is the sweet spot for vintage. Things were still built for ruggedness and they didn't have that faux-luxury vibe that came with the 80s and the desperate need for Swiss watch makers to remain relevant after quartz came along.

Pic related is something that came out in 1954, but still looks better than 100% of the smartwatches that exist now in my opinion.

Alright /fa/, this isn't really specific to fashion, but more or less asking for recommendations + opinions.

I'm trying to get my dad a watch, and I want to get him one that he can truly appreciate and enjoy wearing. He doesn't work in an office, rather he cleans pools...so he's constantly active, always around water, and at times his wrist will bump into stuff occasionally (just the typical bump, not really needing a G-Shock). I tried giving him my G-Shock (DW-5600E master race reporting, also I have an f91w who cares,) but he just...never wore it. He always wears his $20 Casio diver that I bought him 8 years ago.

My specific requirements goes as follows:

>a diver/dive style watch is preferred, but field watch style is also considered
>automatic is definitely preferred, but quartz can be allowed
>rubber strap is preferred, but if no that's fine too
>has to be water resistant to at least 50m, higher is better
>bonus points for seiko
>lume is optional, but would be nice
>budget can't be higher than $250-$300, don't really think he wants to take a $400+ watch into a job that isn't indoors
>inb4 rolex submariner
>no digital display/g-shocks
>no Casio, he wants something different

The only ones I've seriously considered were the seiko 5 (SNZF17) and the SKX007. Problem is, I don't know how tough the 5 is compared to the SKX, and it would take a little longer for me to get the SKX for him by fathers day (yay college).

Thanks in advance /fa/ggots, its truly appreciated

Wearing this today after wearing my gold on black dialled Rolex oysterdate all month while in Australia because I wanted to mix it up a bit.

Got a white dialled Tudor oysterdate with a diamond markered dial and fluted bezel on my other wrist with another timezone on it as I have to be aware of the time in Sydney at the moment as well as local time.

I'm new to watches. I realised that there are to watch threads, one here and one on /g/. I presume here people talk more about aesthetics and on /g/ more about the mechanics.

I'm genuinly interested if you people really like the looks of most watches. I fell like most of them just don't look that good, or at least I don't see what outfits they would fit into. Pilot watches just look like something you would wera when going backpacking. Some divers are okay but I feel like they look good only in a summer outfit. I don't know how anything from breitling or AP doesn't come of as tacky or like you're a rapper.

I don't even like most dress watches, I feel like they put a metric fuck ton of numbers on them or they try to make some sport watch out of it.

So far I like clean white dials like pic related. Can people who know their watches better show me some more obscure really fashionable pieces?

Alsondive watches look shitty as fuck

I like the thin Piaget dress watch

The miniute repeater from Patek

And I think panerai has actually made the most attractive watches in recent decades but they're inherently aren't good quality and just slap movements into watches from a third party..... questionable warranty for what you pay really

Grand seikos are gorgeous, but overpriced imo.

Hold little to no value

In general I prefer a slim watch with a simple face. I have smaller wrists so the bigger divers and metal bracelets do not fit my wrists. I think there are plenty of fashionable watches that are slim with simple faces. A dress watch may have what youre looking for, may have relatively clean faces. Look at seiko presage or citizen for a reasonably priced one.

>> No.13277481

>>13277411
Firstly, there are plenty of simplistic watches, especially if you don't care if they're automatic. Orient, seiko, citizen, tissot all have great automatics with minimalist style.
Watches with very clean looks and are considered dressy and they have several consequences from that. They are usually not designed to withstand a lot of scratch and wear, the bezels and case are very clean and polished and therefore scratches show up much more. They are usually much less water resistant than sport watches, you're probably okay with washing your hands with them on but not much else, and you'll always be worried about that. And if course since they are usually dressier, they may appear silly in a very casual environment.

A lot of people wear pilot and diver watches because of their durability and they generally don't care about scratching them. Even a submariner. Some people also wear those watches due to their history.

Painted blue, if they're actually blued steel, it's acceptable, painting them blue is specifically a poor imitation of that process, it will never look the same and it's much cheaper. I only like watches for the thing itself, they really don't provide any utility for me, so stuff like that is a big turn off. Stowa Klassik is not too bad, I actually like them a lot, but I'd honestly think about a Nomos at that point. If you care about heat-blued hands, buying in calibers might bother you as well, Nomos makes all of them in house, and don't seem to cheap out too much anywhere else.

Generally you're looking at the 1k side of that range, although I'm not anywhere close to an expert, there could easily be a good cheap option I'm missing. I will say that you will notice the difference between cheap painting or powder coating and actual blued steel, if you can find a larger piece of blued metal like a knife or gun the effect will be much more obvious
