Post boot discussion here. Ask for recs, give reviews, seek inspo, etc.
I'm looking for a similar boot to the Viberg Service Boot in shape and design but without the 700 dollar pricetag. What are some good brands to check out with similar stlyes?

There's really not much, that's why they're so expensive. You can try Sagara, and indoesian maker, but sizing can be a pain. If you can somehow get them, the Red Wing flatboxes are similar in silhouette, with an unstructured toebox

As for thursday, I would skip them unless they're under 200. They're a low quality boot

I have 1000 dollars of disposable money to spend on boots if I wanted. Obviously I won't spend that much but if Vibergs are really worth it I'd give it a thought. The most I've spent on boots before is 350 for Red Wings and I have no issues at all. I just want that damn sexy shape of the Vibergs.

Love my Iron Rangers to death, I wear them most days of the week and they just get better and better.
I have some Blacksmiths which are unwearable due to the toes on the right boot being too tight and hurting my foot. Everyone said just wait and they'll stretch out, and they never did even after months of torture wearing them hoping they would, so that pair is unwearable, which is too bad because I like their color.

I'm just looking for different shapes and styles now, as the bump toes on the RWs are pretty hit or miss. They're fine if you have small feet, which I do, but on bigger feet they look like clown shoes.

Pretty crap imo, we really do get the short end when it comes to boots. If you’re willing to save up though RM williams are excellent upgrade or pick one of the dozens of online options (e.g meermin shoes, the last conspiracy, etc)

Otherwise I would just go for clarkes or something like that. Cemented shoes like windsor smith and aquila can be comfy and hold up for about +- 2-3 years before breaking down and needing to be replaced, and leather options tend to be poor.

A little bit here and there. I haven't worn any vintage paraboots, but I have worn Corcoran and the Rocky jump boots.

They are very distinct in their fit, and if the manufacturer doesn't nail the make, then the boot will feel like complete shit. Overall though, they do supply quite a bit of support and are relatively comfortable for extended periods of time on the feet. Plus they look good with anything and are simple to maintain...

I'd recommend the Rocky Paraboot first. At all costs, stay away from the Bates Paraboot. Their leather and outsole is complete shit.

Yeah, I've got some Viberg Service Boots and Derby Shoes. The fit on my feet sealed the deal for me. They feel really solid and reliable but at the same time flex with my foot. They don't feel like a big clunky boot. If the fit, style and leather options don't grab you then go for what does. The leather on my Derby shoes is really beautiful. I just fucking love them. >It's still the oil tanned leather from the tannery they own
Since the mid-80s SB was bought by RW and they produce a tremendous amount of "oil tanned" leather which is really really great quality. Red Wing recommend a variety of their own products for care of their leather which contain waxes and silicone. You can freely use any waxes including beeswax on RW boots. That is a huge plus for many people.

I've got some Truman Boots with Horsehide Pull-Up leather that is oil infused. When people talk about oil in leather production that is usually what they are referring to. It is a completely different process than what RW/SB do. That is one of the main reasons some boots are 2 or 3 times more expensive. Is it worth it? Does it matter? The only reason I bought those boots is that I knew that is specifically what I want. It is the same way with any premium product that is really specific. It could actually be worse for your general needs.

Shell Cordovan is expensive but some people absolutely hate it. If you don't know what Cordovan is then don't worry about it. The thing is though that many shoe companies kind of pretend that their Cordovan colour is also Cordovan leather.

All of this stuff is great in its own way. It is all out there to be enjoyed. I just bought a pair of completely beat up Chippewa boots from the 50s. With a little care they'll be awesome!

>Truman/Dayton
The Truman's were a group buy in advance and I sent in my Brannock details and a tracing of my feet I already had on a different company's form. Basically went a half size down and up in width. They fit great but have their own feel. The waist feels kind of rounded? So completely went against my own advice of trying boots on but it all worked out. The leather is kind of like in this pic but is horse hide. My experience was very positive.

I went to Dayton in Van and none of what they had was for me. Lots of the boots looked like 70s platform shoes or Glam Rock gear. They do lots of custom stuff and are very into customer service. The quality and workmanship is great and the prices are very very good. They have a Tough Logging boot that is really cool looking. I was looking for a pair of Engineer boots and really considered those Logging boots but maybe because I didn't like anything else there.

I go up half a size from the Brannock in my running shoes, sometimes a whole size. For the Truman's I went down a half size but went wider. Let them know about your RWs but maybe consider checking your Brannock size and doing a tracing of your feet as well?

Take it to a cobbler, home remedies aren't that effective.

But if you're determined, buy a pair of shoe trees that are slightly too large, put a couple pairs of heavy wool socks over the shoe trees. Insert the socks and trees overnight. The effectiveness will increase if you wear the boots for a bit at home, just to get some warmth and moisture into the leather (which helps the stretching)

you can get a boot widener that is kind of like the front half of split wooden shoe tree but the back has a long metal handle. you crank the handle and it seperates the front halves outward to widen the boot. some people recommend spraying a little watered down rubbing alcohol inside the boots as well.

i bought mine on eBay from China but never ended up using it. the boots have just widened a little on their own.
