depends on your hair color and thickness, but for my black hair 3mm gives a light grey and 5mm a very dark grey. I buzz in 3 and never let the length pass 5, mostly because 3 suits my head better, but on people with different features a darker buzz looks really nice

3 is pretty short for someone who never got a buzzcut, but still pretty big
2 you can kind of see your scalp through your hair depending on light/angle, pretty short for most people
1 you are almost completely bald, scalp is pretty much visible at all times, already a hardcore cut for most people

3 for me gets long way too fast so my choice is 2, but rarely I use the 1.

start with the 4 and test it on the side of your head until you choose the one you think will like best.
