when it's made by poverty-stricken Indian children for pennies? How the fuck do you justify buying clothes at over 100x markup? I want to dress decently for once but this is ridiculous.

I only buy clothes made by european tailors and custom shit.
The better question why would someone buy shitty brand clothes made by children?

H&M is pretty decent for the basics. T-shirts, sweaters, hoodies, chinos.

They will never be the piece de la resistance of your outfit, but they cover everything else.

It's all about how you put it together and dressing appropriate to your build, which is most likely average to stocky, in which case, that 600 dollar piece you've been eyeing the last month wont look good on you because it was tailor made for 6'2'' lanklet models with perfect hairline, chiseled jaw and more chinbones than face.

What about just taking your new piece to the tailor to get it fit to your body?
