I can speak more on Boston as a city; I go to uni in Massachusetts and have a couple friends who have graduated and live in Boston rn.
It's pretty cool, Cambridge has a good scene. Decent underground scene for techno parties, also a decent punk scene if that's your thing. The city has a lot of sick architecture.
Overall, i think you'll enjoy living there, but I'd never wanna live there other than for uni / couple years. Kind of a boring, financial/corporate feel to it. And lots of douschey bros / basic bitches (esp. at your uni).
Your uni doesn't have a great reputation among the "hip" boston people. It's very frat-orientated and just loads of uninteresting people. You'll have to find a cool alternative crowd to experience that good parts of Boston. But Northeastern is a good uni, focus on education and try to branch out and find cooler locals who don't go to those financial boring unis (like yours and BU). Boston can be a lot of fun if you branch out and know the right people

They're very different, U of St Andrews is less than half the size of U of Edinburgh, and the town is wayyyyy smaller, if that's what you're into. St Andrews is the higher ranked/more prestigious institution, but only barely. I'd visit both, but keep in mind how different they are. It's a pretty unknown small school and the people aren't /fa/, but having a campus surrounded by trees is nice and I get to go walk the trails in between classes. It's real comfy to have a drink and a smoke in between classes out in the woods. There's even a few areas off trail where some fire pits and chairs were set up by students.

Excellent education. Lots of international students which is cool, but mostly people dress in a preppy, cookie-cutter style. Everyone is rich (not saying thats good or bad).
Amherst as a city is alright, solid underground house show scene and there's defo a big alternative sub-culture, so many /fa people in that group. Good house parties/shows, but they do get old. Amherst is close enough to Boston where you can escape for weekends. Also 5 unis in this area, meaning this city is basically all uni students, which gives it a pretty unique and relaxed vibe.
UMass Amherst (biggest uni in Amherst) has incredible campus design. Lots of amazing, old brutalist buildings and one of the tallest libraries in the states.
So overall, Amherst College isn't that /fa, but it and Amherst as a city have a solid underground culture with many alternative people to befriend.

To reiterate what the other guy said, very Greek oriented. Everybody I know there is decently social and is in a frat or sorority. But it's a big school so don't freak out. I went to Ole Miss for a year and even there there's life outside of the Greek system.

Cool internship system if you don't fuck around. Get a job in fashion or music if you can. You get a year or something just to do stuff you think is cool and get a foot in the door.

Parties in Boston are pretty open. Try to meet MIT, Harvard, and BU kids and you'll be able to go anywhere on a weekend. BC is kinda out there but there are cool people here.

Overall, don't stress. It's fucking college, the only way to fuck up is to get stuck up your own ass.
