There are a number of variations of the Speedy...have you stopped by a dealer yet?
With the normal one you've got the traditional hesalite crystal vs. the sapphire sandwich, they have a 1957 reissue (sadly not with the original movement but simply with the original casing and numberical markers), there are different sizes, different movements (there's an automatic version with the co-axial...the proportions are slightly off on this one but it's still a good watch), and of course they have the one with extra complications (moon-phase and date). They've also got a brown faced speedmaster, and they have all the special issue Speedmasters as well (mission patches on the second-hand dial).

There's a lot to choose from. Not that the Panda is a bad choice, but for 4000 or under you've got a LOT of choice. If it sings to you when you put it on your wrist, then you know it's the right one...so try out a bunch and see what you think.

Also, if you go with the speedmaster make sure you buy it WITH the stainless steel bracelet. You can always buy a leather strap later on, but you don't want to get it with only a leather strap and then regret it and have to buy the bracelet after.

Yeah, but it had to be done. I'm convinced the mainspring detached from the movement, so it wasn't working anyway. But Omega has been raising the price of servicing almost every 2 years now where I am, so I had to get it done before it became prohibitively expensive. I know a lot goes into it, and hopefully the end result is worth it (I'm convinced it is) but lately money has been tighter than before, so I have had to take these kinds of things into consideration. I love wearing it, and I've worn it through the most important points in my life so far. But the economy just isn't doing well for me...such is life.

The quartz version is cool, though in all honesty it never appealed to me because I like to hear the sound of the mechanism. What made you go with that choice, if I may ask?

Im trying to figure how to switch to a 2 mechanics and 2 quartz combination without losing too much practicality.

Quartzs are always ready, more accurate, easier and cheaper to service, more dependable... Mechanics are more like art to me.

Trying to decide between these 3. Leaning towards the last one because it's cheaper and would look acceptable in most situations. Is #2 too flashy/old timer looking? Could I wear it on a night out in say either tshirt or button up and jeans? I work in software so definitely not there. I like 2 and could afford it, but it's maybe too much until I can get the rest of the lifestyle to go along with it.

All true points, of course. There are definitely advantages to quartz, which in all honesty is why I tend to prefer them for watches that are hard utility. My Seamaster just got back from servicing...fuck, the thing looks brand new. The baggie of parts they gave me back confirmed my suspicions...but I think given the number of wheels included from the movement (in addition to the normal things they always replace like gaskets and crowns), I have a feeling the movement itself may have had some corrosion too that had to be taken care of.

Bless the watchmaker who took care of it though...they even fixed the misalignment of the hour hand that I've been used to for decades.

>>13107768
It's a curious thing, actually. When I fly, I tend to open the valve if I'm changing sea-level location (like if you're flying from London to Mexico City), and I'll leave it open until I reach the hotel. Probably doesn't make a difference, but even if it did I wouldn't 'see it'. I'm sure there are some people who would use it as a utility watch...after all, the Rolex Deep Sea goes way way down, and no one complains about that. I just complain about the 'ORIGINAL GAS ESCAPE VALVE' and shit all around the inside of the face...awful.

>>13112893
PP are known for having the most immaculate finished movements in the industry...usually only the watchmaker and repairman gets to see it....so it's good that you got the transparent backing (though that's not standard, is it? I was sure they were not...)

Their reputation is not without merit, but there are other makers that are as scary in terms of attention to detail.

The Grand Seiko is possibly the best entry-level mechanical you can buy. They're remarkably accurate in the long term, and priced far better than the competitors that perform as well.

Lange und Sohne is by far the best German (Saxony) brand, and they compete at the highest levels with any other watchmaker. But they're not Swiss made, so their excellent reputation is not as widely spread.

You have to understand. Before the 1970's, if you wanted a watch it had to be mechanical, therefore the market was very different in terms of watch value. You could get a good mechanical for a week's salary at a mid-level job; as an example, Omega was not a high-end luxury that it is today...it was just another watch that was reliable (like Walthams, Longines, etc.).

But when the quartz watch entered the market in the 70's, the mechanical watch makers had shitfits. You could get a watch that was more accurate, less finicky, didn't require servicing all for the fraction of the cost of a mechanical. So the Swiss watchmakers did the only thing they could; they banded together to form conglomerates, and repurposed their work for the luxury end. Instead of selling watches based on their day-to-day function, they sold them using ideas like 'legacy' or 'heritage' and other nonsense.

How can you justify to anyone that it makes sense to drop 1500+ on a watch made of stainless steel, that requires servicing every 5 years (at a hefty cost), and is less accurate day to day than a Timex that cost 5 bucks? You can't.

So, for your question, it's a tough answer. If you're paying more than 5 dollars for a watch, you're paying for a luxury. Money isn't an issue at that point. But if it were me, I'd go with Lange because I simply like their designs more. But I love Vacheron Constantin too...and the JLC Reversos...and on and on.

Me too...as much as I like Lange, the reputation I'm talking about with regard to PP is from watchmakers, not the companies or their advertising arms. I am curious to hear your thoughts on this claim. Is it based on the movement, the finishing, the jewelry, the mechanism innovations....what precisely are you quantifying this statement?

In my experience, Lange can reach PP quite easily...it's just that PP has more continuous years of development on their end, whereas Lange had to restart sometime in the late 90s I think.

It's hard to compare because they both have a wide range of models. Patek are just riding the brand name recognition lately and they have been criticised by people for releasing too many pointless models and not giving their entry level models enough care. If you look at the movement of a basic calatrava it looks the same as a jaeger lecoultre master control which is 1/5th of the price. Lange are known to give the same care for their entry level models as their high end. All their movement are made out of german silver(a mixture of metals which give it's movement a gold-like look and age better) and all lange movement are assembled into a watch, the disassembled to ensure evrything works, and then re-assembled again. Lange also offer better servicing policy where they have a master watchmaker at every one of their retail points.

Again, is hard to compare because they offer different things. Patek is said to be worth it only when you get a high complication from them, like a minute repeater, the problem is that a patek minute repeater costs north of 300. 000. Also, due to brand recognition, patek have better value retention.

But if we're talking strictly the best watch you can get for your money I think you get better watches with Lange or a F.P.Journe

>opening helium valve when switching height above the sea level

Thats completly useless. I habe carried a barometer/altimeter on board a plane many times (casio riseman) and the main pressure change is on board the plane since its not fully pressurized and the pressure inside it is equivalent of 3000m above sea level while flying at around 10000m.

But the pressure difference is still tiny compared to diving, and the seals of the watch wouldnt leak air in and out.

There is a reason its called a HELIUM valve. In the very different conditions to flying or mountaineering that the watch would experience during saturation diving the helium, which molecules are a lot tinier than the ones that compose air in the first place, will leak inside the watch due to the huge pressures of the atmosphere inside the vehicle (or whatever device you happen to be inside of). Then, when decompressing the device, if the watch doesnt decompress back at roughly the same rate it can "explode", hence the helium release valve to prevent that.

Air wont leak inside the watch at sea level, and the decompression inside the plane or going even to La Paz or Nepal wont make the watch explode due to pressure difference no way. Thats way pilit or mountaineering watches even being 20bar wr, or most pro diving timepieces, dont need a helium release valve.

Of course it is useless, but allow me the room to imagine, for god's sake! Many watches will never see the functions they are built with (as much as I enjoy the ProPlof it'll never be attached to a deep sea hard body diving suit, nor will any Speedmaster I own ever go into outer space)...the way I see it, I might as well allow myself some make-believe.

I am well aware of the actual reason for the Helium valve, though I'm glad you wrote it out so others would understand why it's necessary for deep sea habitation environments.

It is interesting though to consider the watchmaking habits that seemed to spring out of the quartz revolution....right now there are many brands that have at least one model that is overengineered for the usage of a human being. I sometimes wonder if it's like other overengineered things (I'm thinking Canada Goose jackets, which seem to be everywhere these days even though most countries I've seen them being worn in don't go below minus 10C)...that there's a certain segment of the population that 'feel safe' with something overengineered, and are willing to pay money for it.

I'm not worried, as an example, that my Seamaster will take on water at any point. If I wear it in seawater, I rinse it off with fresh after, and if it's in the pool, I do the same (for the chlorine). Other than that, it's a normal watch. Even the Speedmaster is supposed to be okay for the swimming pool, though most people I know wouldn't dare wear it.

I'm glad it's back from servicing though. Do you have one as well?

Here is my constructive criticism,

Welcome to watch collecting autist,

You should have spent an extra 120 dollars and gotten yourself a half decent mechanical watch such as a Hamilton Khaki Mechanical, Seiko Turtle, Seiko SKX, Orient Mako, Orient Ray, Orient Bambino or some other meme watch.

You don't have to spend huge to have a cool collection.

Keep that one as a reminder of your noob collecting days.

Get yourself a rolex oyster perpetual 39 or a rolex submariner no-date if that is the case.

For your first and only watch, and considering you are a young bloke, I would suggest something more reliable than a jlc.

Sure, they are great, love the brand, but they are not for the guy needing a daily watch, a rolex on the other hand, will stay on your wrist no matter what, it's not afraid of water, or going hunting, hiking or running, a rolex goes everywhere with you, and still ticks when you need it to, I would never have a moonphase jlc as my only watch, and to be fair, not any of those.

A good pre-owned OP 39 will be cheap and no one will be able to tell it did not come from the boutique (if you're into that), and then, invest the rest of the money on leaving your parents house, it's time already.

I disagree, if you're going swatch route, the sistem 51 probably is the coolest one out there (aside from the tresor magique, I actually love that).

If you're getting one, I'd go for the hodinkee vintage 84, can't get better than that as a minimalistic design, it really is the only brand new swatch worth getting.

5167A-001?

One of the coolest summer watches out there, this screams class, it screams good taste, it's something you would find in the wrist of a man driving a 981 boxster spyder in monaco, it's just that cool, the only thing cooler than that would be one with a green strap, or even better, a fucking tiff & co travel time, absolutely gorgeous, that's the watch I'll wear as a daily beater if I ever really make it in life (being the guy in monaco).

Well, you can always have your opinion, some people might say that based on all the history of patek, it is a better brand, and they make better watches.

I'm not saying I disagree, I really like pp, but I'm tired (4:00am here) and don't feel like going on a rant comparing the two brands, but, i'll say one thing.

TRIPLE SPLIT.

You see, that right there, those two words, they mean too much, technically, als is YEARS ahead of patek as of right now, so I can see why some people would say that they are a better brand, that is, obviously, if we are speaking about movements and complications, so it all depends really on what the topic is specifically, and how you look at it.

But, having been on this market for quite some time now, I do think this is a very strong argument to why the germans are doing better than the swiss in terms of innovation in haute horlogerie.

In th same price range you aint getting anything better than the SKX...

Id go for something more playful for days off, summer etc like an orange dial Mako Ray. You can too consider a Luminox if it fits your style; would be handy for the dayoff wstch to be quartz so you dont need to set it every weekend. And you get a quite different watch with tritium etc.

I gave my orange Mako Ray with orange zulu to my dad for the beach and vacation and he loves it. (Not mine in pic)

Same Anon who owns >>13116816 and >>13117083 here.

Here's a beater watch of mine to keep the thread bumped, it's an Alpha Explorer MKI with a limited edition mother of pearl dial. They apparently only made 250 or 500 of them or something. Bought it just because fuck it, why not.

7/10,

The Khaki is a great watch itself but that bracelet is shocking. I hate how instead of having a single link in the middle like a normal oyster they put that line between the link.

I've had once of these and it looks stupid in person.

Quote on quote anon asked

"
Which of these would work as a manual labor working mans watch? The Seiko or Orient? "

key word here is manual labour you fucking autist, a dress watch is not appropriate when you work a manual labour job. Kill yourself.

I've been looking at getting a Khaki for a while. I think it's a great value, but I'm not a fan of bracelets in general, so I'd probably get it on leather.

>seamaster....fucking why?

Because it sang to me when I tried it on. I have a fairly large wrist and forearm, so the 42mm looks fine and in proportion. It was between that and the Speedy, which I eventually acquired a few years later.

For me the Seamaster is the perfect water watch, and the Speedy is the perfect chronograph. But that's for me, not necessarily for others.

Some people don't seem to understand that some watches appeal to some people and not to others. We can always agree and disagree about objective standards (movement, etc.), but when it comes to aesthetic there are still some areas that fall into the eye of the beholder.

I will praise the aesthetic of Lange, or the proportional perfection of the Speedy, but ultimately if the watch doesn't look and feel right when it's on your wrist, then it's a waste.

Have you tried a Seamaster on? You might like it...

I have tried on the planet ocean, too thick for my tastes but Im not really a fan of any dive watches. I absolutely hate the dial though.
42mm wears well on you.
