They were aesthetic because they had to be. When you give up your democracy for a supreme overlord fascist dictator you naturally need some other outlets to make yourself feel superior. Having the Germany army look simply average would not be in line with hitler’s vision. Germany was supposed to the best in everything, and that extended to clothing.
