pomade is like gel but it doesn't dry out, your hair pretty much always will look wet which works with some oldschools hairstyles
Wax is more of a natural hold, some waxes add a little shine however most of them are matt and are perfect for the dry messy look. It's pretty thick as well so it has a lot of hold.

The last haircut I got was a meme cut of the sides and leave the top long but what the barber did was cut down on the volume at the top and actually left one side of my hair longer than the other in order to let the longer side lay over.

So I'll just preface saying I have REALLY thick, mostly straight hair. I've been growing my hair out over the last few months and it pretty much looks exactly like pic related (Maybe slightly shorter length on the sides, same colour, but my hair does the exact same thing on my forehead which I don't like) (and yes similar facial hair with longer beard near chin). However it's usually a lot less flat looking and when it's dry (and clean) I can make it stick straight up. I've gotten this far by just wearing baseball caps and toques 90% of the time I'm out but at some point I'm sure I'm going to have some formal event I won't be able to wear a hat to or something. I can't seem to get it to slick back without a huge amount of product I don't want to have to leave in my hair all the time. I've always had short military-type haircuts thus far and I've never grown my hair this long before in my life. I've been told that it'll get long enough that it'll weigh itself down but I feel like I'm going through the world's longest awkward stage. I shower everyday and wash/condition my hair with head and shoulders (I used to have a dry scalp but h&s seemed to have fixed that). I towel dry and just comb/brush my hair back before putting on a hat. Are there any specific products you'd recommend that can help keep my hair down better? (like a spray or leave-in conditioner) Should I get a blowdryer and comb it back instead of using a towel? I don't want to lose hope but damn growing hair is hard. Help me out anons.

your hair will always retain some traces of the smell, so if someone were to be wanting to get really close to your face, he would notice that smell.

all hair smells, so if its good oil, this is a good thing.
if its shitty oil, your hair will garner all the worst fragrances contained in it.

my recommendation is to find shampoo thats very good for your head (which may depend on your hair and skin, most importantly: not entirely drying shit out) that you can overuse without worries, so you wont miss cleaning some spots because of conservative shampoo use.

also, the combination if using very little oil and occasional use of other conditioner solutions gives better and more consistent results than just shampoo and (larger amounts of) oil.
