Air-King is my favourite, not gonna' lie. Was my first Rolex, so I kinda' have a soft-spot for it. Only have my receipts + guarantee from when I bought it though, so it's lacking paperwork. Think the year is 1973 on this one, but I'd need to check.

As for vintage Tudors; I'd recommend mini-subs if you're a spoopy skellington, or a vintage Tudor Advisor if you want something a bit more unique. They're pretty rad.

Where? at your local pawn shop.

There is no greatest "watch" ever made as there is no greatest car ever made. Rolex is the ultimate pleb watch for sure. But really horologically relevant brands like Audemars Piguet, Patek Philllipe, Vacheron Constantin, Jeager leCoultre, Breguet, A.lange & Sonne just blow out everything rolex ever made. Arguably, even Grand Seikos are better than rolexes. And there are independent watchmakers which make watches with your own name on it. F.P.Journe is widely considered the best watchmaker in the world currently living. His cheapest watch is double the Daytona.

Here's a rough classification of watch brands: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Td43xUuT34

Again, there is no clear winner, especialy since you have to take into consideration individual models within a brand. Rolexes are good in their own way but I would be dead before I buy one, mainly because I can buy 2 Jeager leCoultre for the price of one Rolex and jlc is the most established movement maker in the world.

Honest question:

Why spend a fortune on a watch that can only read the time, is less accurate than a Chinese corner store quartz watch for 10 bucks or any cell phone, stops functioning when laying dormant for a while, doesn't have a built in light so it can't be read in the dark and (again) costs a fortune to service regularly?

It seems irrational to me to spend a lot of money on an objectively inferior product that continually costs you money and are based on ancient mechanics.

Been browsing old swiss brands.

What do you think of this one, /fa/?

Surprisingly hard to find steel mechanicals from the '60s, at least in my price range. Most are gold plated, and it doesn't seem to make much difference to the price. Is gold acceptable for a vaguely preppy young man to wear?

The PN Daytona was only sold for 15 million because it had PN splooge all over it.

I couldn't consider Vach or Breguet relevant. Rolex is solid, but at the 5-15K level there are arguable better watches, but Rolex designs are timeless and recognizable. If I has a 10K watch budget I'd buy a Jeager or Grand Seiko.

Rolex's golden age was the 60's-70's you really won't find much difference in their watches since then. Buying a used Rolex from a reputable jeweler is probably the best way to buy a Rolex imo. Just be careful.

I'm trying to start making a better impression, from a guy with one pair of jeans and one black hoodie all the time, and f-91w, I'm trying to get into fashion a bit. But this whole thing fucking irritates me for some reason. If a woman told me what watches she'd like men to wear I'd tell her to fuck off. >Most likely leather strap to minimise the chance of metal hitting off something and making noise

As for the watch itself, something extremely middle-brow.

No, I'm not kidding. Most classical musicians are middle-brow. They think black dress shirts look good, when they only look like an awkward compromise between formal and casual, i.e. they look middle-brow.

This reflects their most usual origin in upwardly mobile middle class families that only have a vague and perfunctory idea of what good taste is. Sending their children to piano lessons is often more of a social gesture than a sign of musical appreciation.

Accordingly, they would wear a quartz dress watch, most likely a Tissot. They are self-conscious enough to know not to wear a Rolex, because those are for brash and uncultured plebs, which they are not because they wear a black shirt and some rubber soled synthetic dress shoes.

They are still relatively short term thinkers, and as such don't consider buying a watch that can run on its own steam. Functionally, quartz watches are not inferior to mechanicals; but they symbolise short term thinking and lack of self-reliance. Living from battery to battery has a metaphorical resemblance to living from paycheck to paycheck, or in their case grant to grant.

>What would a composer wear?
Harder to say, because they are more eccentric and less anxious. Could be anything from a plastic Casio to a bare wrist to a Cartier Tank. They are unlikely to wear a diver's watch or something with a metal bracelent. Due to their ascetic lifestyles, gold is unlikely to show up, unless they are able and inclined to splash cash, as Mozart was.

I have that. The battery ran out pretty fast, guessing maybe 2 years max. Compared to f-91w, still have one I think I bought in 2010 or something, not sure, and it's still running. Bought a new f-91w though because the band cracked. Other than that I don't know a lot about it because I didn't wear it a lot. Very light weight and slim just like f-91w. It basically is like having an f-91w just easier to read the time because it's analog, if you think that's easier of course, but with less features.

Well this is a fashion meme board where people spend a fortune on shoes, pants, jackets, man thongs etc. and those items rarely last a lifetime. Watches are kinda the one totally accepted form of jewelry a guy can wear besides a wedding band. Also they are about expert craftsmanship almost to the extent of an art form. Add in the history and status and all that and they are appealing. Its something you can wear every day for your whole life. I understand if people arent interested but there are plenty of worse things to spend your money on. also most fine watches wont lose too much of your value over the years.

I also can't imagine Rolex debasing themselves with a special edition watch with a fancy box and 007 engraved all over the dial and shit.

Also funnily enough, apparently in the James Bond books he was described as wearing a Rolex but it was probably an Explorer and not a Sub.
