Well for starters, shit like Dostoevsky, Kafka, Joyce, Tolstoy, etc. is actually really shitty and boring and pretty much only read by people who are trying to seem smart by reading the "classics". That's why the only people who read these types of books are either pretentious boring hipsters who only pretend to like what they're reading and people who have been forced tto read the books for class.

Contemporary literature is objectively more interesting and well written then some rubbish like The Brothers Karamazov. A good place to start would be Steven King, 50 SShadeys of Grey, the Harry Potter series, or anything by Tom Clancy.

Books today capture the reader attention and imagination - they're filled with fun, and adventure, and action, and romance, and don't spend half the novel beating the reader over thee head with "deep" philosophical questions about morality, love, death, and the human condition. Nobody wants to read that shit. Reading shouldn't feel like a chore or mental exercise, it should be fun and engaging.

Nobody cares about Charles Dickens or some stupid story about someone who live 150 years ago. Real talent is seeen in shit like the Hunger games - you don't need a Ph.D. in philosophy to understand it, and it appeals to a large audience because it's actually interesting ad adventurous, and keeps you on the edge of your seat. If the "classics" are actually any good, then why is it that J K Rowling and John Green probably sell more books then all these shitty, boring, "intellectual" authors combined?

I know you're just baiting but the bitch of it is you're absolutely right about an awful lot of the "classics." It hasn't all aged well. But of course you ruined it by picking 4 authors who are all fucking amazing and can in fact be appreciated by people who haven't been told by their Classic Lit 101 profs how they're SUPPOSED to react to their books.

Maybe you picked four good classic authors on purpose, who knows.

This doesn't really belong on this board but fuck it.

I have never been a fan of On the Road. I think almost everything by the Brontë sisters is a piece of dog shit (excepting some things by Anne, but of course she's the least read out of the 3). I don't like Ray Bradbury at all, and I cannot stand a single thing that Kate Chopin ever wrote. Those are all authors that are commonly considered classic lit (they're widely assigned in high school and university English classes, anyway) whose work I think was overrated from the beginning. Just bad fiction. I don't think those are particularly minority opinions, either, I'd be surprised if most of those novels didn't regularly top lists of "most hated books I was assigned in school."

To Kill a Mockingbird and Uncle Tom's Cabin are both examples of good novels that I think have aged very poorly. They're masterpieces *in the context in which they were written*, but this side of the Civil Rights Movement they're both kind of ... obvious. They're not horrible reads by any means and I'm glad people are still reading them, I just wish they weren't assigned to basically every high schooler ever.

Shakespeare (look, bear with me for a second) is a special case in that a lot of what made him the most popular English writer ever is completely lost on most of the people who read him these days. Which isn't the case for people who first encounter him in another language - English teachers are always going on about how Hamlet is full of hi-larious dick jokes and YOU SHOULD TOTALLY LOVE THIS YOU GUYS. And it is full of dick jokes, the problem is they're unintelligible to people who haven't actively studied Shakespeare, because the language is so archaic. I don't think Shakespeare has aged badly at all, provided you're encountering him as a French person, or a Russian. But there's a reason many English speakers have to be taught to enjoy him and it's not because they're stupid.

Sorry for the blog post.

But if you think that Tolstoy (and most of the other Russian Golden Age authors) aren't full of
>adventure, and action, and romance
then you haven't fucking read them. At least Tolstoy and Pushkin. Dostoevsky is more introspective, I'll admit.

The reason I figured you were baiting, by the way, is the fact that you conflated Steven King / Harry Potter with Tom Clancy and fucking 50 Shades. The former two are generally well thought-of even though they're popular literature, the latter two really are not.

Please justify forcing high school kids to read more than a particularly accessible and relatable excerpt of Dostoevsky. I'd like to know your reasoning. I think it's a mistake and discourages kids from reading. I think they should be assigned something that strikes an appropriate balance between challenging and accessible, like maybe Chekhov if we're sticking with Russians. Forcing kids to read more difficult stuff could turn them off of reading entirely. It's like spinach--if you're forced to eat it as a kid (when you have too many taste buds to enjoy it or even tolerate it), you probably won't eat it as an adult (by which time you have few enough taste buds to maybe enjoy it or at least tolerate it enough to get yourself some nutrients).

Not the same guy but I don't think you can rewlly make kids "like" reading once they've hit highschool. My experience might be a bit tainted by going to public high school in the southwest US but no kids in the regular level classes gave a shit about reading unless they were already into it. It's going to become even harder to convince regular people to read books as time goes on and there are moe and more electronic distractions for children to gravitate towards.

>> No.12947195

>>12947178
I agree with all that, but I'm not talking about getting kids to enjoy reading--I'm talking about not making them hate it. I think the most you can reasonably hope for is not to turn them off entirely, and maybe leave a vague idea that reading can be rewarding in a way that other entertainment media can't. I think that's why To Kill a Mockingbird is such a popular choice for assignment in high school--it seems to be held in EXTREMELY high esteem, especially by the kind of people who stopped reading after high school or college, because it's accessible (written and set in 20th century America) and powerful (injustice against a sympathetic party). I think plenty of kids suffer as they read it, but ultimately remember it as an acutely affecting experience in a way that only reading can provide. I'm not saying they'll ever actually want to read again, but I think it at least leaves the door open to that possibility. And that's as much as you can reasonably hope for.

Totally agree Fahrenheit is a stupid meme but hardly a serious classic, shit like this and to kill a mockingbird are classic teenage fiction and hardly comparable to the denser more canonized classics listed in the original post.
Frankly all the "classics" you listed are high school literature (even Chopin, and the bronte sisters are AP lit or first year lit 101) and even Shakespeare is rather basic (going hard on Shakespeare in collegiate lit would be the equivalent of listening to only Beethoven or saying that Martin Scorsese is the best director ever.
But here's the thing literature is like all other art most people are just never going to enjoy the deep cuts so if you don't like it that's cool but don't act like "all the classics suck" when you can only name drop some basic shit

>Most basic cormac. Try no country , or all the pretty horses
I realize the titles are similar and it's a relatively easy mistake to make, but you really should post with more humility if you're gonna confuse On the Road and The Road. I'm not gonna tell you I've read ever work of fiction McCarthy has ever published, but I've read all of his novels. You will never catch me shitting on THE ROAD, by Cormac McCarthy, unlike ON THE ROAD, by Kerouac.

On that note, I happen to like No Country, but if you're going to try and poopoo The Road as "the most basic Cormac", it's weird to recommend what's generally considered to be one of his most minor novels as an alternative - albeit one that was made very famous by the movie.

>don't act like "all the classics suck" when you can only name drop some basic shit
Do you really get the impression I've only read the books I mentioned and maybe a handful of similar ones? And do you really get the impression that I think "all the classics suck"?

The post I was replying to originally specifically mentioned "books that people are forced to read in school." If I really wanted to "name drop" I could have dropped a dozen authors without ever stepping out of the Romantic period, but unlike you, I wasn't grandstanding, I was making a point, and I made it by listing novels people on this board are likely to have read. More to the point, listing novels people on this board are likely to have been MADE TO READ, because they're some of the novels most commonly forced down helpless English students' throats.

If it's beneath your dignity to talk about how Harper Lee doesn't hold up, I think quite a few of the Russian Golden Age authors (and maybe even a majority of the Soviet ones) have aged badly for the same reason - however much critics and teachers go on about how they get at universal truths, they were in fact written in response to specific social conditions which have been discredited for decades.

Albert Camus' The Stranger
It's a short novel that lays a simple groundwork for Camus' "absurdist" brand of philosophy. Trust me, if you're getting into the real meat of the philosophical canon and not just surface level contemporary stuff, you'll either want to read them in print or not at all. With texts that really require a lot of concentration and abstract thinking, passively listening to them in at a fixed rate that doesn't slow down when you need it to is a good way to ensure you'll get nothing worthwhile out of the text

There's a series written/narrated by a contemporary philosopher that goes over major themes in philosophy and philosophers, that I listen to. It's surface level, but thats the point, it's an introduction to philosophy and to give a context for further reading. Really good for getting a basic understanding of philosophy.

A big part of my awakening was realising the Hollywood "frat douche" trustfund stereotype is actually a Jewish guy.
>Goldman Sachs
>Wall Street is run by the Chosen
>Jews are 5000% over represented at Ivy League compared to the 2% population
>1/3rd of Harvard is Jewish
>Jews make up 43% of the rich 1%
>Jews are classed as "white" in applications, take up the affirmative action quotient for white Europeans
>Jew Hollywood makes the films and shows showing trust fund Ivy League kids as white Europeans
That really activated my almonds

The reason we can't do this is because we have minorities. Europe used to be 99% white and they'd teach their children great European classics, Greek and Roman literature, teach them Latin and German, teach them the Sagas and Shakespeare. OK so you clearly just don’t know anyone who fits the profile of white Wall Street trust fund douche and don’t live anywhere near New England. I mean try just googling the term “WASP” and go from there. It isn’t some Jewish conspiracy. It’s a legit demographic. Most if not all ivy schools had strict quotas on Jews until the second half of the twentieth century. Jews basically run Hollywood and the banks, but there’s no shortage of smart and powerful (and dumb but well connected) protestant white people. Look at the federal government, for starters.

He is saying that IQ is designed in a way that if you took any adequately large group of probands and tested them, the average would always be 100. That's just so you have a reference. Therefore, especially in the western hemisphere, the "average IQ" will never be "substantially under 100".
