The thing about normal glossy nails is that it doesn't really fit if you have any sort of masculine aesthetic. It stands out in a bad way. Arguably you can say the same about matte because it is nail varnish, but obviously less so. If you're not edgy then blue, green and grey seem like obvious go-tos especially darker shades (light blue looks good too imo). Red will make you look like a habitual drag queen tranvestite.

I was considering wearing a cream or beige polish on my nails. I tried a dark purple one on my pinky recently but I'm not a goth or punk so it looks out of place. I really like the look of polish on nails though. It's a weirdly good feel.

As the other anon said, a base coat is an essential. If you do only one thing, use a base coat, it provides great protection. Top coats are helpful, and the shine they give is beautiful too, but you can get matte top coats if shine isn't your style.

One layer base. Two layers of your colour polish. One layer top coat. Ensure layers are thin. Leave at least a few minutes between each coat so they dry, the longer the better.

Seal the free-edge of your nail with your polish. I find that this part of the nail chips away quickly, and I reseal it each day which results in overall longer life span.

Ensure the nail bed is clean, dry and has no previous polish specks before applying polish.

Avoid acetone polish remover unless you actually need it. Buy non-acetone.

Avoid nail polish with particularly harsh ingredients, particularly dibutyl phthalate, toluene and formaldehyde. This rules out pretty much all discount store polishes.

If you want encourage your nails to grow you should stimulate/massage the tissue around the nail, increasing blood flow. You may like to use hand cream during this for healthier nails/skin.

Also you may read that you should take a break from polish to let them heal and breathe. This is bullshit, nails are dead so cannot breathe. I have worn nail polish continuously for 1 & 1/2 years and my nails are perfectly healthy, so it can be achieved with a little care/caution

Wear a bright, shiny, feminine colour (pink or turquoise works well) on a single pinkie finger. Chicks will think you're comfortable enough with your sexuality to express a feminine side, but its a subtle enough gesture that they won't have any doubt as to you being straight. Some non-acetone remover sucks, it depends on the brand. I use Health Basics and it works great. However, sometimes a nail polish can be particularly hard to get rid, especially glitter polish, hence why I suggested only using acetone remover when you need it.
