It's not a working man's uniform, they are mountaineers and they are wearing a mix of civilian clothing and utility clothing for the extreme conditions.

I will repeat again that clothing that is common within the incredibly narrow setting of 1930s mountaineering is not bland clothing now, when it is not the 1930s and you are not climbing a mountain with your fellow mountaineers.

The point is not to glue three feathers and a beer bottle to your ass because it's special and never been done before, not to find the most outlandish thing no one has ever worn. The blandness stems from you and what you find aesthetically and substantially interesting enough to want to emulate. The look you want to achieve could be the look of Mao Zedong, the look of millions of his followers, and it would still be less bland than a street snap of someone wearing fifth grade trickle down aesthetic version of the Mao suit with whatever fit pants is currently in and the shoes of the month. If you already set the bar so low, the results will be even worse.
