>work in financial district in my city
>rarely see people wearing ties with suits
>only about 1/3 of people do, and they are usually older guys
>everyone else that wears a suit, just wears a dress shirt with the top button or two unbuttoned
are ties no longer /fa/?

slightly on this topic what do you guys think about waistcoats?
I always really enjoyed how they look.

I enjoy how they look quite a bit, but they send a bad message in most settings.

Neckwear is one of the few accessories that men are allowed. Anyone you see without it is raw, unfiltered pleb.

Most people find ties uncomfortable (not me) especially when it's hot out there

I enjoy it too.

But out in the real world there just aren't very many scenarios where you can realistically be wearing a three-piece suit and end up without your jacket for the rest of the day.

So you end up looking and feeling fake. A tryhard that couldn't manage a real suit.

Depends on the tie (a patterned tie with color will usually be more /fa/ that a solid dark colored tie, the fabric and texture matters a lot as well). Ties (and pocket squares as an extension) are a great accessory for those who know the basics of color theory and how to mix and match patterns.

As for waistcoats, unless it's with a suit, (e.g. three piece suit or a two piece with an odd waistcoat) I'd suggest staying away. It's waiter tier garbage thanks to guys who think adding one to jeans and a dress shirt make them look semi-formal and cool.

Part of the problem is that they are not entirely wrong. A slim vest in good material with some decent details can bring a lot to an otherwise garbage fit.

I'll can agree a tiny bit, but it's extremely difficult to pull off (pic related, this is how most guys look). It's ten times easier (and look ten times better, in my opinion) to wear a blazer and odd trousers or a casual suit.

auuuuugh.
you're cherry picking though.
cut the tie, the glasses, the watch, and the belt and it would be... well, not alright.
but better than the shirt with the jeans.

Maybe but not by much, it's the equivalent to choosing if you want brain cancer or lung cancer. Besides, it's been played out for ages, I'd bet 90% of the Western male population has worn this outfit at least once in their lives.

Nothin' like a good old ad hominem attack to end a pleasant day.

So can you tell me with a stright face that the jean waistcoat combination isn't quite common?
