thats not why. its because the unit featured in black hawk down had been issued CAR-15 short barreled rifles. The front sight posts on these rifles didn't have the lug for sling swivels or for a bayonet. I think it had something to do with the design that for the under barrel grenade launcher used on them. It was a Vietnam War era gun and a lot of stuff from back then is kinda adhoc as they were still figuring out the AR-15 platform.
